Masacre. Marilena didn’t know any other name for it. It was the first she had ever witnessed, though she imagined it might not be her last. Hard to imagine as it was, such wholesale slaughter happening in Shalador. Mari was of a mind that her sister very much did not need to visit this place.

Of course, it had been fun until this.

She knelt amidst the long line of bodies. Triage. Never her speciality, but Mari had shirked little of her training. She spoke softly, not unkindly, but there was no simpering in her manner. There was too much to do and too many needlessly wounded for her to go about holding hands and clucking like a useless hen. She left that to less capable healers.

Most would live. The worst had been put into beds and coated with the best healing webs Mari could weave. Spun with her Sapphire until she’d nearly wrung it limp, a cautioning hand on her arm sending her to lesser works with her Purple Dusk. Maybe she would have noticed sooner, had it been her Sapphire suspended from her neck. But then, maybe not.

But notice she did. Creeping up her back and leaving a tingling trail along her spine. Mari looked up, one hand holding her hair back from her face, the other laying just over her patient’s chest. Clamping hard down on her fear, Marilena patted her patient’s hand and stood. Not that it made much of a difference in height between the too. But she felt less vulnerable when she wasn’t crouching. A little less like a cornered animal.

”Prince Amets.” Marilena greeted him, stepping directly into his path. Tattooed fingers smoothed her colorful, if blood stained, dress. She thought, maybe, she would die, so tidying herself was only half-prudent depending on how she went. But she had spent a Shaladorian fall trying to catch his eye. Black Widow or no, he was a Warlord Prince, and a handsome one.

And Mari wanted him.

So she offered herself. Outer barriers open in invitation. She hoped he would accept, or that if he rejected her it was no by way of murder. And even if it was by that very thing, he was kind enough not to use one caste and not the other.

I don't worry
life is a journey

A massacre and a killing field that was barely cooled.

Amets should have walked away calmer. Even with all the blood washed from his hands, he should have walked away calmer than he was. But no, he was even more on edge. Antsy and shut off from the one person he very much wanted to be near to. Iris needed rest. He couldn’t argue that, no one sensible could. She’d expended more power than any of them but that didn’t take the sting out of being shut out in the slightest.

So he’d stalked foreign halls, foreign grounds and bristled at anyone coming too close, too quickly. Agitation had left a smoldering pile of canvas in his temporary room, a momentary reprieve for everyone else until he’d gone right back to prowling. At least the ever changing line of healers had learned to avoid him well enough. Even Shahlenne’s resident healer had given him a wide berth where the winged menace usually hounded him. “Tend to yourself and stay out of the way, Prince.” had been the warning, more healer than prince and Amets had huffed but largely stayed away from the worst of the lot.

He’d seen them all anyway.

And a half dead lot was far less interesting than trailing a twist of sapphire that tugged as both familiar and strange all at once. A half buried memory of bonfires and dodged advances came to mind and Amets shook his head. What was she doing in Little Terreille of all places and dealing with their injured and dying? A question for another time when he could think straight and focus. When he wasn’t trailing her with only the lightest Sapphire probe as a warning.

Amets hadn’t meant to disturb her just yet but then he couldn’t exactly find it in himself to feel apologetic. "Lady Marilena." He returned the greeting. She hadn’t run and Amets took that as an invitation to inch ever closer, just daring to brush a stray lock of hair out of her face. Purple Dusk instead of Sapphire greeted him and he frowned. "You've drained it?" That wouldn't do at all. Tangled up in a mess he'd help start and now draining her jewels to help. He had half the mind to herd her off to rest, he almost did.

The invitation was curious, not at all surprising, but curious and Amets reached out brushing against her outer barriers teasingly before drawing back. The temptation was there to refuse, to simply leave her as he had the last time they’d met. “Are you sure?” he murmured.

Marilena's eyelashes fluttered, unsure if she wanted to watch or not as he brushed the hair from her face. Fingertips dangerously close to her flesh. The skin between her shoulder blades tightened, nails digging into the front of her skirt. Mari's cheek tried to follow his palm, her body tried to follow the retreat of his hand as well, but she just caught his frown and paused, half leaned toward him.

"No," she breathed, finding her barrings. Almost but not quite. "There is a fussy little lord wandering about demanding everyone eat and rest. I thought it best to do simpler work to escape him." Marilena smirked, an amused half twist to her full lips. Arching a brow at him, it was she who came a little closer this time, tilting her head back to look up at him. She knew full well what it did, spilling her hair down her back and exposing the whole of her neck.

"I've enough of it to handle you, if that's what you're worried about, Prince." She assured him cheekily. Mari didn't flinch at the sensation of him creeping along the inside of her barriers, but she did not advance along the thread either to test his own. Only daring enough to push so far. She did, however, reach for his hand, sliding her fingers down the length of his until she reached the cup of his palm.

"I'm sure." Marilena whispered, heart racing. He was devilishly handsome. Certainly better looking than any of the warlord princes Araceli kept at her court. Too good, Marilena thought, for the queen he'd chosen to serve. But they didn't always get a choice in that, Mari knew. Poor creatures. And while his dual caste frightened her, Marilena never had trusted black widows, that he was a warlord prince was temptation in itself.

Amets' constant refusals the year before had only made her more determined.

"All I need do is call in a replacement," Mari offered, licking her lips. "And then I can be all yours." A little worried he'd simply say no again.

Amets was careful to keep his snake-tooth away from Marilena's skin. No need to send her fleeing across the room out of fear or from an accidental prick of poison. It would only cause more problems for the court and really it would be a shame to lose such talented healer.

A fussy little lord.

Josiah. He was the only warlord that Amets could think of that would wade into a ward of healers and fuss them into submission. Or as close to it as possible. Too many of them around to actually leave them unattended for long all the same. They'd work themselves to breaking and beyond if left alone or sneak off to do lesser healing as Marilena had. "If that was Lord Redgrove then he'll be back to fuss soon enough." Not that either of them would be here to witness it. Amets was certain of that.

Had she always been so forward? Amets was watching the fall of her hair and the exposed stretch of skin her neck presented. Yes, a touch more subtle but just as forward the last time he'd seen her. He was distracted all over again, wondered briefly what she tasted like and following the curve of her exposed neck once more. Down and then back up again to meet her eyes and he grinned, more predatory than harmless. “I would never assume otherwise, Lady.” Not openly at the very least. That was asking for more trouble than this little tryst would bring.

“Good.” Amets was fairly certain he could feel her pulse quickening through her hand and his grin only widened. Turning her hand over, he placed a kiss there among the tattoos. “Please do. Prince Samirvar will have my head for stealing away one of his healers if you don’t.” And then he’d be more than a little tempted to strangle the man and be done with it.

“All the more reason to be away then.” Not that Mari didn’t enjoy being fussed at. She rather liked the attention. So long as it didn’t get in the way of her work, then it was merely a nuisance. This was nice though. Marilena liked this interruption very much indeed.

Shivering beneath his gaze, Mari felt a spike of fear-fueled anticipation. His smile exposing far more teeth than propriety required. A very different sort of smile than the dismissive ones he had offered her before. Good. She had him. She’d never doubted her ability to win him over given enough time. And the right circumstances.

“How wise of you,” Mari purred, stroking his face as he bent over her hand and pressed a kiss to her tattooed skin. Gently she sent out a tendril of power along a distaff thread. She had, by now, met most of the other healers, but it took a moment to find one that wasn’t neck deep in a healing and tap her gently.

Best Mari have a replacement than Prince Amets a temper, was in not.

Indeed so. Smiling, Mari tucked herself against Amets’ side.

“He wouldn’t dare! Especially now. Someone is on their way.” He smelled divine. Like all the things she should have run and hid from. “Shall we be on ours?” She tried not to be too eager, but even with the hidden danger - one he very kindly did not touch her with - and the more blatant one of his Jewels and princely caste, Marilena found it hard to be anything but.

The shiver made him pause, eyeing her and wondering if she’d reconsidered or even considered running. Too late for the latter and the former he’d honor with some difficulty. A great deal of difficulty but he’d manage and maybe only half the ward’s remaining patients would suffer for it. Maybe.

No need for such though, not with Mari tucked against his side and seemingly very pleased with herself. Persistent little healer. “Oh he would dare, he’s already tried chasing me off once for the day.” He only half managed to feign hurt, “He’ll be less annoyed with us both now, I think.” And if the healer prince was annoyed? He’d have a while to simmer down before he found a means of retaliation. Likely through Iris.

The thought sent a shudder down his spine and Amets’ agitation spiked. Only for a moment. There would be time for sorting out the complicated mess between Iris and himself after. After he sated his curiosity about the little healer tucked against his side. Pity she wasn’t taller, he might have indulged already and put one curiosity to rest. “Let’s.” he was positively purring as he half herded, half lead her away.
