Sylvia smiled, even as she ducked her head at the compliment. “Oh, well, thank you, but truly, you are far too kind,” she said with a soft chuckle. “After all, if you’re such an old man, I’m not far behind.” She was teasing of course, but for all her contentment, she still didn’t know how to accept attention with grace.

It was amusing really, how little he had really changed. For all his good intentions, the socializing aspect had never been his best skill. But his wife breezed through such interactions, leading him all the while. They had always been quite the power couple. It had always been impressive to watch. At the time, it had almost felt like a reflection of Robert and her - at least how they could be. Of course, turned out that had just been wishful thinking. It felt odd looking back on those times, now that she was so incredibly self-aware of the myriad of mistakes she had made.

She laughed at his assurances. “I have no idea what this skill is you’re talking about. I’m sure you’re usually more composed though. Hard not to get a bit rattled seeing someone from ancient history.”

Sylvia listened intently as he spoke. The news about Layla was shocking though. “Oh my goodness, I am so sorry, that is awful. I almost can’t believe it - you two were always so perfect together.” She thought of herself and Robert. “Or, you seemed it at least.” What was visible wasn’t always the truth after all. She had learned that lesson herself. “How’s the baby? They’d have to be, what, a teenager by now?”

“Good for you, with the Court thing though. You deserve it, you always worked hard. I’m sure you make a great Steward. They’re lucky to have you.” A wry smile tugged at her lips. “This is where I’m from actually. The Court thing turned out to be more Robert’s thing than mine. So I came back home. I guess that would have been a few years after you guys left.”

Her gaze shifted, to look around the store, her smile lessening to one of fond nostalgia, though a hint of sadness snuck into her eyes. “Yeah. It was my dad’s. I guess, technically, it’s still my mom’s now. But I run it ever since I came back home. So I spend all my days here. Really rather boring I suppose. Nothing exciting like you must be used to.”

It wasn’t exciting, or even interesting really. But Sylvia wasn’t sorry for her simple life, and she’d hardly apologize for it. It was enough for her. More than she deserved really, after leaving it all behind without a thought.

“Wow, Cathal Lowry. Sorry, I'm just still a bit stunned I guess. Of all the people to walk in here today, you are the last person I might have expected. Not that I’m complaining of course. A happy coincidence you could say. It’s... well, it’s good to see you again.”

It was just an average day really. At least, that’s what Sylvia had been thinking.

The day had been going well enough. She’d gotten an early start, adding the most recent shipment to the shelves before the doors opened. The morning had been quiet, as it typically was. Just before lunchtime though, things picked up.

She’d made a handful of sales - the easy sort, where someone came in knowing what they wanted and didn’t need assistance aside from checking out. There’d been an elderly couple in early, shopping for their grandchildren. That had been the highlight of her day thus far. They’d been so kind and patient. She had helped them for the better part of an hour, finding baby books for their newest grandchild, and making selections for their older grandchildren in a surprisingly wide variety of topics. It had been endearing and it didn’t hurt that it was the biggest sale she’d made that whole week.

Things had slowed again, for all of half an hour perhaps. Just enough for her to get about halfway through her sandwich. Really, she should hire someone to help so she could have a proper lunch break, but she kept procrastinating. She wouldn’t know what to do with a sudden abundance of free time anyway.

The afternoon had been a bit more hectic, lots of people coming and going. One Prince had come in looking for a specific title along with a variety of specialty paper and inks. She had the book in stock, but she didn’t generally stock the specialty supplies. They weren’t common enough purchases typically. However, she’d convinced him to wait for her to place an order with her supplier. If he was satisfied, he’d even expressed interest in setting up a regular shipment for him.

It seemed the worst of the rush had passed though. There were a couple browsers, content to meander the aisles on their own, which left her free to rearrange the displays. It was in the midst of that task that she heard a male voice behind her.

“Oh, it’s not bother,” she assured him as she carefully balanced the remaining books in her arms on the display. “I’d be happy to help you in any way possible, sir,” she continued as she turned around to face him.

“Mother Night,” she gasped in a quiet whisper as she took in the face of the man before her. It had been so many years since she’d last seen it, but beneath the lines of age and the scruff of facial hair that had never been there before, she was certain it was none other than the Warlord she had known all those years before.

“Cathal? Cathal Lowry, is that really you?” she asked, even as she grew more and more certain that she was right. Besides, it was clear he recognized her as well. “Wow, it’s been practically forever since I last saw you.” They’d both been so young back then.

“How have you been? What brings you to this corner of the Territory? Oh, forgive me, I’m being rude, of course, how is Layla doing?”
