Steward! Oh Steward!

Astrid didn't bother to send for Vigot. Oh no, she would go to Vigot instead. Her steward was a fussing little man with the same jewel range as she had, but he was fantastic at his job, if a bit jumpy. Arykn was still, well.. Arykn and Astrid knew to go to the Sjef solely, and before she knew the logistics of her plan would work, was probably futile. Arykn would probably need numbers and statistics and paperwork, the man was such a fuddy-duddy and even more fussy than Vigot. So she would compromise. She would browbeat - or charm-, Vigot into agreeing that sending Freya to Edyis in search of her wayward little lamb was the best course of action.

She needed to find her little lamb before her brothers tore their world apart looking for their only niece. She did not like her brothers being upset. She did not like being upset and she was upset. Her brothers were upset and her niece was missing. It had been months since Tait's escort had slunk home, empty-headed and empty-handed. All he could say was she'd been there and then she was not. He couldn't even get a read on the psychic scents. Useless male.

So now Astrid would come to a not so useless male. She already had some information handy. Tait's disappearance, a few other missing people to cushion the expenditure. Astrid was queen enough and concerned enough that it was not only Tait's disappearance that was being to worry her. Reports of missing women and men were trickling in. Tait here, a healer there. Something was going on and Astrid needed to know. The wolves and cats could very well be the culprits, but she needed to know. Her brothers needed closure. She needed closure. And answers.

She tapped on the door before skipping through it, nothing stern about Astrid, and plunked herself down in one of the chairs in front of Vigot's desk. It was luck that the man was in. It would be pretty foolish for her normal theatrics if she was alone. "Vigot, my friend, my confidant," she started, "I have something I need to run by you and I need numbers afterward."

Steam rose from the tea beside Vigot's pens. Light from the window pooled in, cool and bright. He'd been up for several hours, looking over the accounts, organizing the books. He'd just leaned back in his chair, tea in hand, steam fogging up his glasses, when one of his hallway alarms went off. He had time to take one bracing breath before Astrid breached the door, knocking more as courtesy than formality, and then was in a chair.

Astrid was like a whirlwind in Vigot's little office. She was also the reason he'd actually gotten chairs, and not just little stools to pull out when he was feeling particularly hemmed in and didn't want people to visit for too long.

He looked over his glasses and his tea at her, blinking, already tracking back to the most recent reports from their districts. He didn't think there'd been anything amiss, but Astrid had always been quick to intercept missives, about anything and everything, and perhaps she'd caught something before it'd made its way to him. "Lady Astrid," he said. He knew she didn't care about the formalities so much, but it was hard to kick the training, even if the 'my friend' did bring a little smile to his face.

But whatever it was seemed serious, her normal, Darkness-may-care attitude not so present. He set his tea down, one hand automatically going to his most updated ledger, the other to a blank page in a different book so that he might separate out pertinent information. "What kind of something? Which numbers?"

He was just so adorable when he looked over his glasses at her that Astrid wanted to pinch his cheeks. He was not at all like Arkyn and exactly the same as the Sjef. Such fussy old men. "Lord Vigot," she echoed him trying very hard not to sound mocking while she did so. She needed Vigot on her side, not as her opponent in this. If she was going to get what she wanted she needed to make it appealing and insulting her steward before they talked was not the way to go.

"I've been getting varied reports from different villages that people are going missing," she began with a rushed breath. She liked to galavant across the countryside, loved to get the input of the people she governed. From Blood to Landen, they all had an opinion and thoughts so she'd learned quickly that if she wanted to do a good job she had to go to the masses. "Just up and disappearing. I've had word from my brother that Tait is missing, has been missing these last few months," her mouth slid into a grim line, "I want to send Freya out to search for her, for them. But I need the cost projections and probability of success before justifying sending an airship for her."

She blew out a breath as she looked at him, blue eyes shrewd and a little calculated. There were no tears, she would not manipulate that way but she could use words almost like a blunt weapon, "I need your brain, Lord, to give something to Arkyn so he'll agree to sending people out. So will you do it?"

"Which villages?" he asked, falling into stride with her seriousness. How far away were these reports? How quickly could he reach out to his sisters, make sure they were safe, see if they'd be willing to ask around, maybe.

Airship was what he wrote while she spoke. Provisions, at least, what, two weeks for the crew. In addition to rations and, likely, clothing for the missing. But how many?

He stalled at the mention of her niece. Darkness. "Months? Was she..." how to put it tactfully, "first?" Even that felt too blunt, a saw for something that called for a scalpel.

Vague, was what it felt like. Trying to grasp the shape of a thing the dark with one hand. He paused his notes while he flipped through the mental books he kept of their storehouses. A flick of Craft set one of the knick-knacks on his desks into motion, a little sphere with concentric rings around it that spun at the corner of his eye. It made a little low humming sound, almost musical, that Vigot found was easy to turn into background noise while he thought.

"We need a direction," he said at last, looking at her solemnly. "Can't throw a ship into the dark and call it good odds. We need to talk to the Sjefs. Find out how many are missing and how many got lost in the snow." That was the politest euphemism he knew for 'dead', and it still felt too flippant, especially if 'missing' turned into something more sinister. Taken by the wind, was his grandmother's favorite, but he felt like that, too, weighed the mind too heavily toward a grim outcome.

He leaned back, scratching a few more notes before flipping his pen over his fingers, not entirely satisfied with what he saw. "I can give you numbers, but they'll be rough. Arkyn might not be satisfied, until we know more."

"The outlying mostly," she told him with certainty. If the missing were from the city she would have heard about it earlier. Wouldn't she have? Astrid had never questioned her authority here, never question who she was to Meols and never questioned her ability to rule it. But now. Now with so many of the people who looked to her and the Sjef to keep them happy, healthy and relatively safe missing, how could Astrid truly think she was doing a fine job of being Queen of Meols? Beneath her calm and confident shield, Astrid was seething with anger at herself.

"No," she slashed a hand down, "No. After questioning others in the city and around the outskirts, I've found that its been happening for many years." Let her anger simmer instead of her sadness and despair. Her people would need her anger. Rose jeweled and not dark she might be, Astrid Heartsbane was Glacian and Glacia did not cower in the dark.

"I had planned on sending Freya over to Eydis," she continued, "Send her with a message and an inquiry. If Meols is losing people than Odense is as well." She brought a slender finger to her lips as a leg crossed the other. Tapping lightly she thought. Which direction could they be? East was big cat country and west was Eyrien. South was Dea al Mon, Little Terrielle, Sceval and Scelt. "To a Southern ally. To the south is the only place we can send them to search. Where else could they go?" she questioned, "There is no other direction they could go. Why would the Eyrien's steal our people? The cats will take some to be certain, but the Eyriens? Doubtful."

"Rough numbers are still numbers, Vigot," she assured him, "Arkyn might not be but there are other Sjefs to go to who might be. Other queens to question. This will be figured out." Renewed confidence. Assurance that she would succeed in this. She would find her niece and bring the twat home. How dare she go missing and make Astrid and her father worry so for her? Willful chit. Astrid would spank her ass when she got home.

He nodded. It sounded like these kidnappers operated much like pirates did. It made the most sense, in a sick way, to target those areas where communication between the people and the city was limited.

There's a pressure in his jaw at her words, and his pen gave a sharp crack. Years. How many lost, then? How may families broken? "Apologies, lady," he mumbled at the display of anger and surprise. Provisions - one dozen. He hoped the number would be smaller, but his Queen's simmering anger and his own gut feeling made him believe otherwise.

He watched her debate, running scenarios in his own head as well. A Southern ally indeed. The big cats were unlikely to make so many simply vanish, and the Eyriens took their own blood purity too seriously to risk wingless spawn with a short lived Blood. "Little Terreille is diverse enough that Glacians passing through might not be noticed. Easier to hide foreign captives among foreign faces." Even with their shaky footing in regards to trades, Little Terreille prided itself on being a place of welcome. Surely they would want to know of people missing from their neighbors lands? "How many might they have lost,if they are in this position as well?" After all, the very reason that it would be possible to hide the passage of stolen peoples made Little Terreille ripe for the same thievery. Perhaps they would be willing to pool their resources if they recognized the potential threat within their borders.

"We will need to speak to our captains." Who had been docked long enough to be fit to leave again, who could they trust to be discreet about their intentions? "Find who has enough crew fit to travel South for an extended journey." He took down a few names, adding healers to the list. "We can have an outline for a crew planned within the week. Two at most, and keeping a weather eye." It would be a risk to send them out when the weather was turning, but inactivity had apparently let their people be stolen right out from under their noses for years, and Vigot couldn't help but think of his own sisters, and knew he'd throw himself into any storm to find them.
