Whoops again

Peigin wasn’t sure if it was the noise or the smell. It could have been the people. She was sure it was the intention. It crept like eyes along her skin, or would have if Peigin had dared expose any. She huddled deep in her coat while others stripped gratefully from theirs and sprawled on on seating designed for more than one person in mind. She managed to pull her fur trimmed hood from her head and remove her gloves but Peigin didn’t get far beyond that point.

Too much noise. And the stink of sex in the air. They might not have been able to smell it, but she could. It was thick. A rich smell that make her stomach queasy and her nerves rattle. Here was a place full of people. People bedding people. And Peigin was too much a wolf to go through with it. It didn’t matter how many threats Peregrine made or how many marks he stuck on the pocket of the coat they had picked for her - thicker than anything she’d ever worn before.

She just couldn’t. So she ran away. Right back out the door she’d only come in moments before. Enough time to take off her gloves and hood. To feel the eyes and intention and flee from it. Out on the street she tried to put her clothing back to rights. Holding a glove in one hand, she half dragged the other one while also trying to lift her hood back over her hair. Which had gone wild in the wind. Stinging her eyes much like the cold stung her cheeks.

Peigin was too busy fighting her garments and her feet to look where her feet took her. Body stumbling up against something hard and fleshy. She grunted and looked up. Eyes wide and half hidden by empty glove fingers which flopped limply in her face. ”Sorry,” she whispered, dying a little inside.

A simple shopping expedition, nothing more and nothing less. That was his intention, a gift perhaps for his mother. Maybe some sweets or a pretty little bauble. Something that would make her squeal like a young lass again. Gunnar loved making his mother happy and that squeal was one that ensured it was true.

Golden eyes narrowed against the wind and the cold. Gunnar knew the winter would be horrid this year. Mind already formulating plans and allotments for the people. He'd discuss the issue with Solveig later, make sure she knew she would have his backing should anything happen. Not that anything would happen. Nothing would. Just a regular old Glacian winter.

Minding his own business when she hurtled into him. Stumbling back a step, Darkness but she hit him hard, Gunnar's eyes widened just slightly. Scent familiar. Was that shirt one he knew? Had it been on the floor of his room at some point? But no. It had never been in such an intimate place. It was familiar, though. Golden eyes looked down into a face flapped by a glove and he thought.

She was not strikingly beautiful, not in the way that Solveig was, and neither of his brothers would ever think her such but the upturned nose and flash of freckles across her face drew his attention. "No harm done now," he drawled at her whispered apology. It was odd, the feeling of knowing and not knowing. He knew her from somewhere but could not place her anywhere. The shirt, the cloak ones he'd seen before, he knew he had but where?

"Do I know you?" he questioned head cocked and brow quizzical.

Him! Peigin nearly screamed, body rocking away from him. Thighs and elbows bumping against him as she tried not to fall backwards, but to still get away as fast as she could. ”Youuu....” The word a croak in her throat. Why was he looking at her? All wide eyed and innocent. He was a thief! Or an attempted thief.

And a warlord prince. Scent of the caste strong on his person, which she’d been much too close to. She could pick it out easily now after living in a house with one. Healer and warlord were easier now too. Castes placed quickly. Jewels were harder, and Peigin didn’t dare risk a probe. He might think it was interest rather than terror.

”No.” He didn’t know her, and she didn’t know him. Her wolf did, but no one could ever know about her. Peigin couldn’t tell her people from not, it didn’t matter what shape they were in. Blood, wolf, au corinthe. There was no way to know without running the risk of exposure. And exposure meant death. The purging sort, that started with Peigin and ended with anyone she had contact with.

”No. No. Not me.” She slid her fingers into her gloves finally, feet crushing the snow as she backed away from him. Slowly. Carefully. Pulling her hood back up over her head, wiping her hair away from her face with the back of a gloved hand. Yellow eyes meant nothing. Kite’s were almost gold because he had an Eyrien father. It happened sometimes, apparently. He could have been much the same.

Why was he staring?! Peigin wanted to scream. Instead she started side stepping down the street, a choking laugh gurgling in her throat. ”Someone else.” She babbled, forcing a smile, eyes sliding away from his face. He was very big. ”I have to go now.” The baby was waiting. Peigin hunched her shoulders. Peregrine would be with her. And he’d know. It made her hesitate. No good options. Two terrifying outcomes to choose from was no good at all.

Head cocked and yellow eyes curious at her stuttered word. She had said, "you" like she knew him. Did he know her? He must. He had to. Even if he didn't know her he wanted to. There was a pull there, something that tugged at him to know her. Fingers itched to take her hair down and see what she looked like with it billowing around her face. What the hell was wrong with him? He didn't even know her.

"You're certain?" he asked again, "I feel like I do." No caste to scent, nothing to tell him what she was. Simply jewels that were not as dark or deep as his. Gentle, soft probes and her fear slapped him in the face. What did she have to fear from him? They didn't know each other by her own admission but still. He couldn't shake the feeling that he knew those clothes, knew her scent and feel. But it was impossible. Thighs touching his as she sought to escape.

Yellow, yellow those eyes were yellow and his own narrowed with suspicion as she backed away from him. He couldn't stop the staring, couldn't stop his mind from running it all through piece by piece. "I don't think so," he said as he started following her down the side walk. He had to look like a weirdo, stranger harassing a frightened girl, but who was going to step in front of Reric's steward when it was obvious he was on a mission?

His legs were longer, his reach just as and Gunnar's hand closed around her slender arm to stop her. "I know you," he declared with certainty, "I know you from somewhere. Not someone else. You. Don't lie now, I'll know. Just tell the truth. How do I know you?" He gave her a little shake to emphasis his point. He did. He did know her. Too many witnesses and not enough time to bring out the wolf to know for certain if her scent was one he knew, but her psychic feel was so familiar and at the edges of his mind.

"Who are you?" he demanded.

”Uh.” Peigin swallowed. Throat dry and lips chapped. She licked them, and coughed up the other half of her denial. ”Huh.” The lying made her sweat. Especially at this distance, which was not enough between them. So close she could see the variations in the color of his eyes. Or where his cheek had been nicked by the razor blade. ”You don’t.” He couldn’t!

Giving a little shiver, Pug backed away. Bodies brushing and his eyes narrowing. Of course they didn’t know each other. She’d been a wolf and he was just a man. A man who was following her. Pace setting him just behind her shoulder. Peigin sank deeper into her jacket and tried not to panic. Or cry. Or run. Hurrying, she tried to out walk him. The only place she had to go was home.

And home was only peaceful when it was just her and Birdy. Or at least when Peregrine was away. The rest were mostly okay and left her in peace. Unlike this warlord prince who caught her by the arm and gave her a tug that jerked her to a stop. Peigin moaned and went limp in his hand. Practically sinking into the ground.

”Nooo.” Shoulders around her ears she hid in the hood of her jacket. She sniffled, when he shook her, tears welling up and spilling down her cheeks. Pug shook her head. He didn’t! She wasn’t! It was terrifying! She pried at his fingers and tried to twist away. ”Peigin! My name. Please let go.” Whisper almost a shout, she rumbled the words at him while swiping tears from her cheeks. The cold made them sting something fierce.

At any other time, Gunnar would have felt bad, contrite even, for terrifying her but at this moment he couldn't. He was too curious. Too focused on the fact that he knew this witch from somewhere, too sure that they had met before. Just a simple shirt, a scent to tantalizing to let go, that was all he had to go on but he was so certain.

Out walking him was pointless, his legs and his reach were longer. His eyes widened and he shifted to take her weight when she went limb in his grip. "Yes," he stated simply and without a doubt as he gave her another little shake and then she was shouting out her name. And there it was. The contriteness and chagrin for scaring her rearing its ugly head. He hadn't meant to scare her. Then she was crying and Gunnar let her go abruptly as she tried to twist away from him. Had he hurt her?

"Are you hurt?" he asked with worry, "I didn't mean to shake you so hard, Peigin." He liked her name. Different and pretty in his mind. It rolled off his tongue nicely and he found himself saying it two more times under his breath. "I know you, witch," he wove his mind back to the reason he'd chased her in the first place. "I know that shirt and that cloak. I am not stupid or imaging things, witch. I know and you would do well to tell me where."

Eyes that he should know. Eyes that were yellow and bright with tears. Yellow, yellow. Why were he yes yellow and gold? His own widened with the implications and Gunnar huffed out a breath. Couldn't be possible. Just the luck of her birth. Maybe she was Dhemlan bred or Hayllian some where in her linage. Couldn't possibly be.

"I think," he began with his wheels turning and turning, "We need to have a talk, little witch."

It was hard to argue with someone when they were rattling your teeth in your skull. Shoulder shook until she could feel her vertebra gross loose between her tense muscles. They did not know each other! More terrifying that his stalking her down the street and shaking her was that he thought they did. Recognizing in her something from the time that had not met.  There had been no introductions, just a tussle over her bag.

Her bag!

Refusing to admit a prior knowledge to him, Pug gave up her name. Not quick or smart enough to give him a fake one, she supplied the same name her mother had given her upon birth. And he stopped shaking her. Shrinking a little and worrying about having hurt her. Trying to sink farther into her coat, Peigin scowled and shook her head. Tears worked their way around the wrinkles of her nose as she sniffed. ”No.” And she wasn’t really but she was still frightened and upset. Who shook people on a public street? And who let them? Everyone, it seemed. Giving them a wide berth and pointedly looking away.

Her hope that he was done, having been supplied her name, was dashed quickly. He let go but he didn’t go away. Still standing too close. Focus too intent. Pug wiped her face with the heels of her hands, and her nose with a tatter kerchief from her pocket that smell distinctly of salt. He, nameless menace that he was, continued to be determined. There was nothing else in all the world worse than determination.

”I can’t!” She whined, voice cracking over the ball of emotion at the back of her throat. ”These are my things, but I don’t know you.” He would never recognize her. She had been a wolf then, and there was nothing but a glint of color in her eye to hint she might sometimes be both a girl and wolf. But he knew her things. It worried Peigin enough to chew her lip and try to imagine a few lies.

While she was at that, the warlord prince decided they needed to talk more. Peigin whimpered. ”I have work to do.” The only excuse she could think of. And she did. Birdy would be up from her nap in an hour and Pug was sure she should be there. Everyone else was there as well, but at the moment, even the dragon summoner seemed less frightening than this man who wanted to talk. So saying, she tried slipping past him again. Shoulders hunched and head down so she could shuffle home without anyone else looking at her.

It sort of worked. Mostly because no one wanted to look at the male she couldn’t shake. It had to be a warlord prince thing, Peigin decided. ”I don’t know you! And my clothes don’t know you, prince, they’re clothes.” Face hidden and voice muffled by her hood, Pug talked without looking. All of her all shook up and shaking. She was going to cry more. She could feel it welling up already.

Gunnar could almost taste her fear and her panic, her voice whining with it and he grimaced. His mother would have his head for putting such a sound in a woman's voice and he regretted it. But he knew he was right. Something told him. Maybe something from the Darkness whispered to him that this witch, this Peigin was known to him. She was, she had to be no matter her denials. Gunnar knew her and she knew him.

"You don't know me," he agreed though he didn't feel it, "But I know those clothes." It was said with such assurance, such certainty that there couldn't be any other tone from him. "I saw them just days ago, little witch, a very confusing day that was but I know I saw them there." And he did. He remembered where he had seen this shirt and this cloak. Seen them in a bag stolen away from him on the sound of his laughter. He was certain now where he had seen them.

Her arguments were sound and noises that bit at him to be more gentle, to rein the Warlord Prince in and leave the feral nature that was threatening to come forth behind. People skirted them, watching wearily as Gunnar breathed deeply to control that wildness that was him. Wild and fierce as a warlord prince and more so with the wolf. Hunched and curved, Peigin gave too much sight and feeling of prey. Gunnar didn't want her to be prey. Not now, not yet.

"Who's your patron?" he asked, "I'll excort you to your work and I can ask for your time there. I'm sure your boss would want you back in one piece." He doubted she could make it alone, her terror and tears nearly blinding him. "We can talk while we walk," hand reaching out to grip her elbow as she tried to slip by him and his body turned with her. Steps fell in beside her and his grip on her elbow gentling. It wouldn't do to put a bruise on her.

"Why do I know these things from a bag I saw days ago Peigin?" he asked softly, voice quiet in the hustle of the crowd, "Why do I think you lie to me?"

He just didn't stop. Too sure that they should know each other. Peigin didn't want to know him. Or for him to know her. She liked being invisible. Wished, often, that she was back in Terreille. Bronwyn had not been pleasant. She had been mean and spiteful, but it had been a quiet existence. No men to harass her. The insults had not hurt. Peigin had heard them before.

She had been dry. Warm. Fed. Free to do as she pleased so long as her work was done and she was near enough to be summoned if she was wanted. No one demanding she take spears. No one demanding they knew her or her clothes.

"Maybe they were alike! I got them ready made." He couldn't know. Peigin was sure if he remembered the clothes he would think of the wolf. She could not let him put herself and the wolf together. Panic filling her. Sure he would assume they were one in the same and she would have to find a way to kill him. Or worse. Run away and leave Birdy alone with her dragon summoning father.

Sometimes she wanted to though. House so full. Demands so many.

"I don't think that is wise." She did not know Peregrine well. But he did not seem the welcoming her forgiving type. Pug did not know what he would do if she brought some male home with her. And she did not want to bring some male home with her. Handsome or not. He was terrifying and too close to her secrets. And her body. Why would he just not go away? Sniffing snot back into her nose, Peigin wiped more tears from her face.

Hand on her elbow, she was left with no choice. Blindly, Peigin walked. Not sure where she was taking them. Her feet moved, the rest of her feeling frozen. Her thoughts caught in a repeat so she could advance no further than terror. "I don't know." She repeated. Maybe she should take him home. Let Peregrine summon up another dragon. This time he could protect Birdy and Pug could lay down and die, escaping all of them and their demands.

"I don't know." She whimpered. "It wasn't me or mine. I don't carry a bag." She never would again. Everything would go into her cabinet and out again. She'd done it only to mark her place. The strange Glacian wilderness still confused her sometimes. Better to be lost than caught, however.
