Finding Stavangar turned out to be the easy part, for Thara. Not long after passing through the city gates, the young Healer stumbled across a vibrant and bustling open market. The sights and scents of the food alone was enough to convince Thara to stop by and explore.

No-one was expecting her anyway, so there were no meetings to keep. She would need to find lodging before sundown, but the sun hadn't yet reached it's zenith - there would be plenty of time later to worry about a place to stay. For now, the desire to explore had seized her spirit.

One particular stall drew her in with fragrances that reminded her of home. The man behind his cart smiled at her and stood from his chair, welcoming her closer. "Fresh-roasted Chestnuts! Excellent to snack on while you explore the city," he invited.

Charmed by the idea, and memories of roasting chestnuts with her family, Thara couldn't find it in herself to turn him down. "Yes, please!" She replied eagerly, exchanging a handful of marks for a small basket of the fragrant treats. "By the way," Thara spoke up before continuing on, "I've only just arrived. Any recommended sights I shouldn't miss?"

His smile widened, "Welcome! I hope you enjoy your stay, Lady." The merchant pointed to vaguely over his shoulder and advised, "Out that way is where the Skyships dock. If you've never seen a bunch of them at once, well... It's a sight you won't soon forget!"

Thara thanked him and returned to exploring the marketplace. Before long, her little wicker basket of nuts was empty, and she'd meandered far enough from where she began that she wasn't sure where the gate was anymore.

The buildings were all equally large and unfamiliar to her, and the sun was unhelpfully dead-center in the sky. "There's nothing for it now, Ylvi," Thara sighed to herself. "Pick a direction and start walking. The cities are supposedly circular anyway." Losing her way was an unfamiliar sensation, but at least she wasn't at risk of actually getting dangerously lost.

Trying to look more confident than she felt, Thara tucked the empty chestnut basket into her Cabinet and set off for the next interesting thing to see in Stavangar. Hopefully it would be the Skyship docks, but anything exciting would be good enough.

The sun was high in the sky and Sirin basked in the light, head tilted back and a small smile curving her lips. It was nice to be out of the meeting rooms and offices where she spent most of her time while working. Technically speaking, she was still doing Queen business: inspecting the markets and getting a sense for how her city was faring. In reality, while inspecting what produce was available and the quality of it was important, going out herself was just a nice excuse to get some fresh air, especially when she was starting to stress overmuch and even her knitting wasn’t enough to soothe her.

Sirin wandered the western market, one she didn’t usually frequent, given her mother’s shop was in the southernmost one. The fact that she didn’t typically come this way was one of the reasons the Queen was here. Due to her familiarity with the southern market, Sirin knew fairly well what was for sale and the quality thereof, so instead she’d chosen to investigate the other markets of her city. The fact that she might find something new to take home was just a plus.

Passing by several food stalls, Sirin found her footsteps slowing as she perused the tasty treats. Mouth watering, the young woman happily handed over the required marks to the shopkeep with a quiet, “Thank you.” As Sirin wandered away, a cinnamon sprinkled flatbread in hand, she took to people watching as much as checking the goods for sale. The further she wandered from the gate, the more interested in the people she became without as many shiny trinkets and delicious foods to tempt her. Sirin usually walked with her head down, but sometimes people watching was simply fun. These were her people, after all, and no matter how shy she was, Sirin still loved her people and wanted to know them.

Not too far from the market, Sirin spotted a young lady, seemingly close in age to Sirin herself. Though subtle, the young Queen noticed a slight hesitation in the lady’s steps and in the way she looked around as if seeing everything for the first time. The lady carried herself lightly, and seemed to have little trouble in avoiding running into the many people using the thoroughfare. Curious and nervous in equal measure, Sirin bit her lip, considering what to do. Well, she had been trying to combat her anxieties more often, and this wasn’t a court situation, which made it substantially less intimidating. Sirin drew in a deep breath, ate the last bite of her flatbread snack and moved forward. It took effort to keep her shoulders back and her head high, but Sirin managed, if barely.

“Hello?” Her voice was a little soft and hesitant as she tried to get the lady’s attention, but she didn’t embarrass herself with a stutter or anything, so Sirin counted it as a victory. “I couldn’t help but notice that you seemed… new to the area? Is there anywhere I can help you find?”

Thara caught the gentle greeting and turned to see if she was being addressed. There were many people here, but sure enough - a lady stood there smiling at her! Thara felt a reciprocal smile bloom on her own face, though it was tempered a bit with a mistrust born of unfamiliarity.

When she realized she'd been spotted as a newcomer, Thara's cheeks flushed with mild embarrassment. She wasn't used to being lost. Even in the new places she'd discovered on hunting trips, she'd always known where she was and the way back.

"Ahh, hello," She returned the greeting with a cursory half-curtsey to her age-mate, guessing at proper city-dweller protocol. Her smile turned a bit sheepish, and Thara gestured vaguely at the buildings all around them, "Yes, I'm afraid every bit of this is entirely new to me."

The people in the thoroughfare parted around them as smoothly as water in a stream. Now that she was no longer engaged in watching the buildings and the paths of the people around her, Thara's attention was drawn in a dozen different directions: the flashes of colorful scarfes here and brightly knitted mittens there, the sounds of chiming laughter and the burble of constant conversation all around her.

Several moments passed before the young Healer pulled her focus back to the pretty blonde witch before her who had so kindly offered her help. "Focus, Ylvi. It's impolite to let your attention wander when you're with company," She chided herself, sounding a lot like her own mother.

Easily summoning a healthy ration of confidence, Thara answered the Lady's question somewhat vaguely. "Mostly, I'm just looking for something interesting, anything will do! Someone suggested the Skyship docks," Thara trailed off hopefully, "I don't suppose you know how to get to those, do you?"

When the other lady returned her smile, Sirin found herself relaxing a bit more. The small half-curtsey was rather sweet, if the young Queen was honest, and she returned the gesture herself, small smile widening into something a bit more open and honest.

“If you’ve never been to one of the cities before, they can be rather overwhelming.” Sirin tried to be reassuring, remembering all the times her brother Eirik was forced to come find her every time she’d gotten lost when she was younger, being too shy to ask for help from any nearby adults. “I grew up here and even I get lost sometimes.”

Sidestepping a mother guiding her young children and a man driving an Ispen drawn cart, the Queen drew a bit closer to the young woman, tight shoulders loosening as she lost some of her nervousness in her desire to help.

“I do actually! You weren’t too far off course. The docks are in the northwestern part of Stavangar.” Sirin gestured, more animated and excited. Eirik had joined their city’s Sky Squadron as soon as he turned sixteen and Sirin had spent many hours watching him train and work on the ships while they were docked, her father often coming to collect her with an exasperated smile at the end of his guard shift. “I can take you there, if you’d like?”

Sirin began moving in the right direction; despite being in a portion of the city she wasn’t very used to, she knew her way to the docks by heart. She paused, realizing that she’d somehow managed to forget her court etiquette somewhere between the Sjefhjem and the market. Sirin’s typically pale face bloomed red in her embarrassment, and her smile turned sheepish. She couldn’t quite meet the lady’s eyes. “I’m Sirin Vedis, Queen of Stavangar. I apologize for not introducing myself sooner.”

Thara nodded along, humming in agreement to the lady's commentary. This place definitely looked easy to get lost in. She relaxed when she noticed her guide's shoulders lower, no longer worried that she was being too much of a bother.

"I would have guessed that surely this woman," Thara sent a polite probe and realized her guide was a Queen, "This Queen would have more important things to be doing with her time than leading around a lost visitor, but I'm glad she's willing to show me around - at least a little," Thara smiled at the thought.

"I'd love the company and guidance, as long as it's not a bother to you," Thara's light reply trailed off when she spotted the high spots of color on the Lady's cheeks. Curiosity held her tongue.

At the Queen's introduction, Thara mentally stumbled over herself in shock.

She looked more closely at the young woman beside her, sending a polite probe as she did. Sure enough, not just Queen - but Dark in ways she didn't recognize, and not a single inkling of a lie echoed around her gaze.

Memories of rumors and stories of celebrations last Frosjemi in Stavangar as they had welcomed a new Queen. It hadn't made a big impact in Thara's village - no more than usual, at least. "Now that I think about it,"Thara mused, half panicked, "Sirin Vedis does sound familiar."

"My apologies, Lady Vedis!" Thara offered as formally as she could manage while she dipped into a deep, though wobbly, curtsey. Court protocol hadn't been a priority in her village, but she knew enough to get by. Eyes downcast and nervous of having inflicted terrible insult, Thara murmured regretfully, "I'm afraid I've been overly-familiar with you."

After a moment of contrite silence, Thara gathered the dregs of her pride and reached for her self-confidence. "This Sirin Vedis hasn't seemed too insulted by me so far, maybe I've gotten lucky?" She wondered to herself.

Holding out hope that maybe Queen Vedis would still want to show her to the docks, Thara offered her hands in the most formal greeting she remembered from the village Priestess's lessons. "I am called Thara Ylvi, and I am at your service."

Sirin grew flustered as the lady, a gentle probe said Healer, grew more deferential to her. Queen though she may be, Sirin had never wanted others to see her as someone greater than them. Another probe gave back the sense of a familiar sort of dark, of Green. She flailed her equally green mittens with just an accent of yellow, and tried to appear as friendly and approachable as possible. “No, no! It’s fine!” The young woman gave a hopefully open and calming smile. Unfortunately, given her own feelings of nervousness, she wasn’t sure she was being as calming as she wanted.

“I’m happy to show you! Honestly, it’s nice to be out of my office and among my people.” She shifted uncomfortably, embarrassed by forgetting such an important thing as introductions. After hearing the lady’s name, Sirin found herself a slight bit more relaxed. They’d both forgotten to introduce themselves, so it wasn’t as bad as it could have been. “It’s wonderful to meet you, Lady Ylvi. I’m glad to make your acquaintance.”

She tugged on her cloak, a nervous habit, and gestured to the street before them. “I truly am glad for an excuse to wander my city, instead of sitting at my desk.” Sirin offered a small, amused smirk. “I’m happy to show you some of my favorite parts of the city. Provided you don’t tell anyone that I have favorites, of course.” The Queen gestured to the street before them, an embarrassed but hopefully welcoming smile on her lips. “Shall we?”

As the Queen frantically waved her mittens, Thara's attention was snagged by the pretty yellow accents, and she found herself calming under Vedis' reassurances.

Absently she wondered who had knitted the mittens, and marveled at the vibrant colors. Dyes were a luxury most people in her village had never bothered with, but Thara was finding herself quite charmed by the myriad of rainbow colors that she had seen so far today.

The Queen's words drew her back out of her distracted thoughts and Thara had to stamp down a flash of irritation. She didn't know why she kept getting so badly off topic. "This has never happened before," She worried, "I hope nothing is wrong with me."

Wrenching her focus back to the conversation at hand, Thara snuck a closer look and was relieved and mildly amused to find that they had each embarrassed themselves. "Thankfully," Thara thought, "Queen Vedis doesn't seem the vengeful sort." Privately, she was also ecstatic, "A Queen, glad to meet me? How cool is that?!"

The young Healer smiled conspiratorially and easily agreed, "The secret of the Queen's favorite parts of the city is safe with me!"

Sirin Vedis was easy to get along with, if she could ignore the intimidating social gap between them, and Thara found herself wanting to spend as much time with her as she could. It probably wouldn't be very long as they both would have things to take care of sooner or later, but she wouldn't be so foolish as to miss this opportunity.

Trying not to forget her manners this time, Thara cheerily addressed Queen Vedis, "Where shall we go first, Lady Vedis?"

The Healer seemed calmer, and Sirin breathed an internal sigh of relief, glad that even with a bit of a rocky, embarrassing start, things were still going rather well. “I appreciate your discretion in this situation, Lady Ylvi. It wouldn’t do to have my people think I liked some places more.” Sirin let out a soft laugh and grin. A tilt of her head to indicate the direction they were heading and she started down the street at a sedate pace. “Why don’t we start with the Skyships? Since you were trying to find them anyway.”

She had noticed Ylvi’s distraction and followed her line of sight. The Hearth Witch Queen couldn’t help but puff up and beam with pride. “Do you like them?” Sirin held her hands out to Thara to show off her favorite mittens. “I knitted them myself! I get my supplies from my mother. She owns a clothing shop near the south gate.” She trailed off, a bit sheepish at having started rambling, but she had a hard time containing her enthusiasm for her hobby and her mother’s business. She often tried to suppress the urge to talk about them while interacting with other members of the court, worried about appearances, so having someone show interest had completely destroyed Sirin’s self-control.

If Sirin was honest, it had been a while since she’d simply enjoyed the presence of someone her own age. She’d been so concerned with taking over the Queenship that she hadn’t spent much time socializing other than with court members. It was nice getting to be primarily Sirin Vedis, the young woman, instead of Sirin Vedis, Stavangar’s Queen.

Before the silence could stretch on for too long, overly conscious of making things awkward as she was, Sirin tried to keep the conversation moving. “So, what brings you to Stavangar?” Worried about prying too much, she hurried to add, “If you don’t mind my asking!”

Thara allowed herself to be swept up in the Queen's pace, deciding to take a chance and walk beside Queen Vedis. Thara had heard of some courtly protocols that forbade walking beside one's betters. She mused privately, "Queen Vedis is certainly one of my social betters, but she seems willing to take a break from all that formality."

When Queen Vedis mentioned her talent with knitting, Thara felt a swell of respect and interest well up inside her. Knitting was a highly valued skill in her village, but she'd never had much talent for it. Something in the declaration that Queen Vedis had "made them herself" made her sound like a worthy ruler. The delayed respect might have seemed a bit backward, but that the priorities a commoner. Here was a young woman, the Queen of Stavangar - surely she should command respect just by the title itself. Even so, Thara couldn't help herself.

Smiling eagerly, Thara made a mental note to ask if they could visit her mother's shop later.

Thara was thankful that Queen Vedis hadn't minded the gap in conversation too much. "What do you talk about with a City-Queen in her spare time, anyway?" she wondered. The question was welcome, and Thara tried to keep her answers pleasant and interesting - terrified of accidentally stifling the conversation.

"I'm actually looking for a place to live," she said bashfully and full of hesitation, "I couldn't stay in my village anymore."

She realized how that sounded moments after it left her mouth and she cringed, hurriedly adding, "Not that I was cast out or anything! I left because I chose to leave," Thara swallowed the bitterness in her heart, hoping it didn't show too much in her tone. Making a poor impression with the ruling Queen wasn't exactly the start she'd wanted to make on her first day in Stavangar.

Sirin couldn’t help but beam, her happy smile lighting up her face when Lady Ylvi moved to walk beside her. It reminded Sirin of wandering Stavangar with her sister and the handful of friends she’d managed to make despite her shyness back in school. Even though she’d been quiet, the others had filled in the silence with their excited chatter, and Sirin had felt like she belonged. Somehow, this seemed similar, like an echo of that happy sensation.

The city was alive around them, laughter and the muddled sound of overlapping conversations filling the air even though the crowds were thinning a bit the further away they went from the market. Having lived in a city her entire life, she was quite used to the often rushed pace of city life and how quick you sometimes needed to be while navigating the crowds. But her companion was new to everything, and Sirin forced herself to keep her pace slower than she might have otherwise; She didn’t want to lose Lady Ylvi in the streets of Sirin’s own city, after all. Or seem like she was impatient to get to their destination.

When the Healer spoke about wanting to move to the city, Sirin turned an excited smile on the other young woman. New people and new talents in Stavangar was something she wanted as the City’s Queen. Her excitement dimmed somewhat as the lady continued. She couldn’t help the flash of concern when Lady Ylvi mentioned being unable to live in her village any longer. Even with the reassurance the she had hurried to add, Sirin couldn’t help but worry. It didn’t seem like things had gone well for Thara Ylvi recently, and getting lost in Stavangar had likely only added to that.

“Well…” Sirin started, nibbling her bottom lip in thought. She spared a brief thought to how her guards would likely feel about what she was about to do, and had to forcibly stop herself from cringing. It likely wasn’t the smartest idea, or the safest, but just wandering the city with Lady Ylvi had been calming in a way the young Queen hadn’t felt in a while. And Sirin had always had a soft heart. “The Sjefhjem has several guest rooms, and I also know of a few inns not too far from it, if you’re looking for a place to stay while you figure things out. Assuming you don’t already have lodging, that is!” She paused then, hesitant to pry any more than she already had.

“If you wouldn’t mind telling me what sort of job you’re looking for, I might be able to point you in the right direction?” She fiddled with the decorative tassels at the bottom of her coat, nervous that she might have overstepped her place and made the Healer uncomfortable. It certainly didn’t help that Sirin had the sense that she could actually feel the disapproval from her guards, despite the fact that there was only the one following her today and who probably couldn’t hear what she was saying to disapprove of it. Probably.

Queen Vedis drew the entirety of Thara's attention with her first hesitant utterance, and Thara felt her heart sink into her stomach, sure that she'd ruined her chances. Before she had a chance to make excuses and find a quiet place to recover, the Queen spoke again.

When Thara realized what the City-Queen was offering, she was filled with gratitude. "Someone to help me settle in the city, even if just a little bit! The Darkness has been very kind to me today," Thara spared a moment to give praise and thanks for the blessing she'd been given in the form of meeting this Sirin Vedis.

Her voice full of eager gratitude, Thara answered, "That would be wonderful! I haven't arranged a place to stay yet," she trailed off, "I was actually a little worried I wouldn't be able to find a good place." The young Healer considered Sirin's other question with seriousness, "I don't really know what sort of job I'm looking for, though," she confessed, "Sorry. I know that wasn't very helpful. I know what I can offer in a village, but I'm not sure what would be useful here." Thara regrouped her thoughts and started again, more positive this time, "I can heal, though - I'm a very accomplished Healer!"

She considered Queen Vedis momentarily and wondered, "Would it be too strange for the city to admit that a Lady had become one of the best hunters and fighters of her village? Of course it didn't matter as much in the village, when talent was talent no matter who could offer it, but in the city... well. Who knows what's different here."

Deciding to err on the side of caution for now, since she wasn't really keen to brag about it anyway, Thara waited in semi-awkward silence for Queen Vedis's input. Putting so much expectation on this virtual stranger seemed wrong, somehow, but if the Queen was willing to help, who was Thara to turn down the welcome assistance?

Thara’s grateful voice drew the tension from Sirin’s shoulders. She’d suspected that the Healer didn’t have a place to stay, but there was always the chance that her offer could be taken badly, as an insult or as pity. Instead, Lady Ylvi seemed glad for the offer.

“Well, I’m sure a room can be set aside for you. Or, if you aren’t comfortable at the Sjefhjem, I can show you one of the inns later and you can book a room.” Sirin offered, glad that her well-meaning attempts to help had been accepted. When the Healer continued, expressing concern over what skills would be useful in Stavangar, Sirin hummed, thinking it over.

“It’s alright. It’s understandable that the needs of a village might be different than those of a city. But I’m sure we can find a job that will be a good fit!” In fact, she was determined to help. Sirin loved the idea of helping her people; It was part of why she’d apprenticed herself to the previous Queen in the first place. And here was someone who wanted to live in Sirin’s city that she could aid! Small though the act might be, for Sirin it was the very reason she’d become Queen, and she could never turn away someone in need. “A good Healer is always a blessing. I know various city clinics are always looking for additional Healers. The court too, if that’s something you’re interested in. Though there’s usually a trial period for those positions, as I understand it.”

Sirin continued trying to think of any job openings or opportunities that she knew of as they walked, getting closer to the skyship docks. Frustratingly, she hadn’t kept up much with who was looking to hire or for what, not even in the southern market. Maybe something closer to home? But what help did the court need currently? She honestly wasn’t sure. Thinking of the court reminded her of all the paperwork she still needed to do, and all the meetings that were scheduled for later that week. And the fact that Sirin still had trouble keeping her itinerary straight, which gave her an idea.

“It’s not really Healer work, but if you have skills with bookkeeping or keeping things organized and on schedule, and a good deal of patience, I do need an aide to help me.” Sirin smiled sheepishly as she pictured the disapproving or exasperated expressions on her guards’ faces whenever one of them found her sleeping at her desk or in one of her heavily cushioned chairs with reports and knitting projects scattered around her. Having someone around to help her keep paperwork and reports straight, and to make sure she remembered meeting times and important things like meals would be nice.

Walking beside Queen Vedis turned out to be relaxing and refreshing, once Thara got over her nerves about being so close to nobility. "She's surprisingly grounded," Thara thought absently as she admired the Queen's knitted gloves. Clinical work sounded familar and reliable, if a little boring. "If nothing else works out, then I can offer my services at a clinic, but I'd like to try something a little new and exciting," Thara mused.

After a few moments of silence, Queen Vedis made an offer that absolutely stunned Thara. She never would have expected the helpfulness and generosity displayed by her new Queen. Here she was, fresh to the city and a total stranger... and yet Queen Vedis was already putting Thara's worries to rest.

"Honestly, I don't know much about Courtly things," Thara admitted, "but I am interested in being your aide!" Thara smiled, finding her confidence again, "I'm sure there are things I'd have to learn, but I've always been a quick learner on my feet. I've helped with some bookkeeping before, back home." Thara winced at the soured memories that swam to the surface, but she forced past them with a tight smile. "If you're willing to have me, I'd love to help you - even if it just turns out to be in a trial period," Thara offered humbly, still utterly stunned at the thought that a Queen of the Jamble might want her help.

She couldn't quite put her finger on it, but she felt a strong desire to stick around and spend more time with this charming young woman. "Perhaps it's merely the allure of a Queen, I've never experienced it before. Even so, Queen Vedis has been kind to me in a place I thought to find no friends," Thara marveled to herself as she silently walked beside Queen Vedis, hope thrumming through her veins like liquified stars.

Sirin couldn’t help the bright, excited smile that overcame her when Ylvi expressed interest in her proposition. Honestly, the Healer was like a breath of fresh air after being trapped indoors for too long with her apparent honesty and the way she respected the station of Stavangar’s Queen but still treated Sirin like a person. Having someone her own age around who she could talk to, who might even have a fresh perspective on any issues the Queen was trying to work through, given that Thara was so new to city life, sounded wonderful.

“It’s alright if you don’t know much about Court. I can teach you at least the basics, and I’m sure there are others in the Court who can tell you anything else you might want to know,” the young woman had a small, happy bounce in her step as she started mentally working through everything they’d need to do to make things official. “I’m sure I can set up at least a trial period, if nothing else, and if you’re working with the Court, it should be easy enough to get you a room.”

She sent a bit of a sheepish smile to Thara, “I’m sure this all seems very sudden. I hope I’m not overwhelming you.” Ahead of them, the buildings stopped, giving way to the docks. Sirin gestured proudly out at the skyships and crews scattered around preparing for deployment or working on repairs. “And these are the skyship docks of Stavangar! I hope they live up to your expectations!” She paused to wave at a few crew members she recognized from her time spent around the docks tailing her brother.

The docks were almost as loud as the market, what with the calls to and from each member of a crew and all the people they worked with to keep the ships up and flying. It was oddly soothing to her, being here, the sights and sounds bringing back even more fond memories. “Let me know if there’s anything you’d like to see,” Sirin continued to smile and revelled in the contentment of simply being herself alongside someone who didn’t seem to mind her quirks.

Thara's first impression of the docks was of something loud and incredibly busy, all full of life and many things to do. The sights hit her next, and oh what sights they were! Everywhere for as far as she could see, hundreds of tall masts bobbed and swayed - their white sails gathered up and ruffling in the breeze. She wondered what it would be like, to sail across the water or even through the air!

She breathed in deeply, enjoying the cool salty breeze as it washed over her senses. She had always been one for the mountain forest, the land's wild nature pressing up against her as if to say, "There is no escaping! Revel in me!" Faced with the breeze off the water, slight as it was due to the activity as the docks, Thara felt a new appreciation for the wonders of Glacia. The mountain lakes and streams of her childhood had not prepared her for the impact of this scene.

Queed Vedis spoke again and she nodded eagerly, thinking to herself, "Of course! This is fantastic, that vendor had been right to send me to the docks."

"I'm not sure what else is here to be seen, Queen Vedis, but..." The young healer trailed off and cast her mind back, wondering what else she had wanted to see. "Oh!" she exclaimed, blushing in trepidation as she remembered suddenly, "I think I'd like to see your mother's shop, if that's alright?"

She was curious, and Queen Vedis had mentioned it, but it still felt so personal - to see a shop owned by one of the Queen's family - Thara was sure such familiarity would not be permitted. "Surely it would be only available to limited patrons?" she thought glumly, "I shouldn't get my hopes up."
