Personal Requests
« on: March 07, 2018, 11:36:35 AM »
Somehow, winter always meant more paperwork.  Yearly reports from the District and Province Courts had to be checked over and signed off on.  Budgets had to be drawn up.  Yearly gifts to the staff and servants of the Territory properties had to be decided on, and then distributed.  And on and on and on.  And of course the increased workload came at the time of the year when the earth was sleeping, leaving Nari always feeling a tiny bit tired herself.

She repressed a groan as she looked again at the piles of paperwork that still needed to be dealt with and wondered if it would be worth it to sneak out for a while - take a walk in the garden or something.  But no, someone would find out somehow, and then that would just give the court gossips an opportunity to set the rumors that she was shirking her duties flying around again.  She'd not asked to be Territory Queen, and yet she seemed to be surrounded by people acting like she'd taken the seat by some sort of foul means.  As if there weren't enough problems outside her borders.  She didn't need these ones inside them.

A knock on her office door pulled her out of her thoughts.  A quick psychic probe told her it was Iseul, which was interesting.  What could have brought the Court Healer here, for a face to face talk rather than something handled via psychic threads?  "Come in," she called, glad for the excuse to put paperwork aside for a little bit.

It was the breath we took when we first met.

She could do this! Steeling herself Isuel lifted her balled fist to knock. Stopped just before her hand rapped the wood and turned away. Again. For the fifth time. Toes twisting in her soft soled shoes as she tried to escape.

Then stopped again. Thumbs fidgeting at her waist. She had promised Ji-hun weeks ago she would ask. Had promised herself too! The right moment hadn’t presented itself. So she had kept waiting. Kept hoping fate or time would solve the problem. Prove to her that Ji-hun wanted... well, was it presumptuous to say herself? She wanted him to want her for more than the job she could offer. The good word she could put in.

Before she could change her mind again Isuel went back to the door. She was not afraid of Lady Choe. They were on amicable terms. As amicable as two young women in the spotlight of the territory court could hope to be at least.

Still. Doubts and shyness nearly stayed her hand again. No. She could do this. Isuel knocked. Outermost barriers opened so that the expected probes could easily identify her. Waiting only a breath after the invitation to enter. Door closing behind her with a gentle click. ”Lady Choe. I hope I’m not interrupting at a bad time? I was hoping for a few minutes if you have them to spare.”

Nari inclined her head at the Healer.  "You are hardly interrupting," she said, with a small smile.  "Truthfully I am grateful for any distraction from this endless paperwork."  There was a slight edge to her tone that hinted at a desire to call the paperwork something far worse than 'endless', but that was the closest to letting her true feelings about it show, at least in this semi-public space.

She gestured at the chairs on the other side of her desk.  "Please have a seat?  Would you like me to call for some tea or anything?"  She was painfully curious as to what brought Iseul here - she was usually so quiet, so unlike her brother.  Which was probably for the best.  Nari wasn't sure she could handle two people with the... intensity of Kyung in her court.

It was the breath we took when we first met.

Hands tucked demurely in her lap Iseul gave a soft smile. Eyes nearly meeting those of the queen. Almost. A touch too meek for such boldness, but too respectful to stare at her own feet in the lady’s presence. ”I am glad it will be a pleasant disruption.” She smoothed the skirt of her dress with one small hand. ”Breaks are good for the eyes, anyway. Healer’s orders... or something of the sort.” Her voice lowered to a near whisper as she lost track of the humor she was trying to use.

She nodded in thanks. Sweeping over to the offered chair. ”Tea would be most welcome, Lady Choe.” Her palms touched in a gesture of gratitude. Tea would steel her nerves. There was a personal preference for coffee, but she would not make such a request in the lady’s house. Anything that could be seen as unconventional would only make progress more challenging. Iseul understood the art of choosing your battles. Which was why she had never asked any sort of favor before.

Quiet for a moment she bit the inside of her lip. Was she making a fool of herself? She was sure Grandmother would say yes. Putting her own name, reputation, and favor on the line for a male. Oddly, that only encouraged her to speak. ”I know that it can be a... challenging endeavor to find people of the right, um.” She thought carefully but only paused for a second. Trying to convey many points at once. All without saying them in a way others might judge. Just in case. ”competency? That will also fit well into the current climate of the court. If... suggesting such a person would not be presumptuous... I would like to recommend a friend.” Was she blushing, or was her face just warm? Delicate fingers brushed the skin to find out. Fairly sure the color had risen.

Nari smiled at Iseul's comment about breaks being important, and when the healer trailed off, obviously overcome with a bout of shyness she said with mock grave sincerity "I will take that under advisement, Lady Healer."  Hopefully the mild joke would help ease Iseul's nerves.

She sent a mental request to one of the maids who usually hovered nearby to bring a tray of tea, and perhaps some light snacks as well.  Considering it, Nari couldn't remember exactly when she'd eaten last, and now that she was thinking about it, she could feel her body demanding fuel.  Light snacks would be a good idea.  She really needed to be better about eating when she was working.

Iseul's hesitant words, and rising blush forced Nari to hide a smile.  There was little doubt in her mind that Iseul had reasons beyond the professional ones for making this request.  Nari was not above indulging in a little gossip from time to time, and found herself wanting to make inquiries as to what her quiet healer had be up to recently.  But she kept her face composed and asked simply, "A friend?  And who would this friend be?"

Should she have written the request instead? Iseul worried the inside of her lip while she waited for Lady Choe to ask her brief questions. Aware, painfully aware, of how ridiculous she looked. A subtle mien of amusement accompanying her small smile. Lips curling towards one side of her mouth as she rubbed the nail of one thumb with the pad of the other.

”Yes Lady Choe, my good f-friend... Prince Ji-hun Seo.” She managed not to choke on his name. Still strange to say again after so many years apart. Calling up images of his gentle smile to her mind. With a small breath to clear her thoughts Iseul repeated it, saying things twice made them easier to remember. And she wanted Lady Choe to remember. ”Prince Seo is a reputable escort with excellent references. Myself included-” Oh! Was that too forward? Too revealing? Back tracking she clarified, ”we served together on the district level when I was merely an apprentice.”

She didn’t think sympathy was needed, but it crossed her mind to include more of his story. The decision was put off another moment as another knock sounded at the door. A prim maid, skin etched with years of experience. Faint gray along her temples and a silver serving tray between her hands.

When they were alone again, then, Iseul would explain why he was not already contracted by another court. Then cross her fingers and hope.
