Premier nights. Horizon loved them. Even if they weren’t her own, the excitement was just too palpable to be melancholy over a lost chance. Tonight wasn’t such a night however. She had managed to earn herself a casting in the newest play done by Lord Maverick. A feat, if she’d ever accomplished one. She might not have been the leading lady of the show, but Horizon was sure to make her presence known.

On stage and off it.

Dressed in a gown as different from her stage costume as Horizon could manage. Not an inch of it demure. It hung from her neck by a ribbon. The same ribbon looping beneath her breasts before criss crossing her back bare. The same color as the bubbling champagne passed among the guests. Ribbons embroidered in stiff gold thread braided into her hair.

She wore no shoes and felt amazing.

Laughing softly with one of the other girls. Whispering set secrets between each other over tall fluted glasses. Cheeks flushed and eyes bright with the coy mirth of young women. She saw him over her not-quite-friend’s shoulder. Tall like she was tall. Taller than he ought to be. Taller than was polite as she’d heard it called. Horizon smiled at him, dipping her face back to the conversation she was suddenly much less interested in.

Watched him. Turning just enough, so she could see him in her periphery without seeming to spy. She liked his shock of red hair. He looked like trouble. Like a tomato that pretends to be ripe on the outside, red and lush. Then tricky and green within. Horizon liked that sort fried up. Sneaky but still edible. So she pulled her hair over her shoulder and gave him a good look at her back. Bare except for the ribbons all the way down to the dimples at the base.

Amazing how things could change overnight. Declan went to sleep as a socially tolerated escort in one queen’s second circle and woke up the territory First Escort of another. Suddenly he was a wanted man. In the best sense. A twist of the Winds catapulting him into a reality that had only been a hoped for possibility of his future.

It wasn’t all coronation parties and ballroom dances though. There was hard work to be done! So Declan did the best thing for everyone involved and got out of Van’s way.

Tonight his queen was having a bit of well earned rest. Which, sadly, she didn’t need him for. A bit of space for them to indulge their more “private” fancies was overdue. He could only imagine what Van was getting up to. Since she’d never tell him the kinky little details. His own activities were far tamer, he was sure. Just a new performance to watch and the party afterward.

No one ever got up to too much trouble at such events. In the past he had tried to liven things up by adding Askavian honey to the pastries, or switching the decanter of sparkling water with vodka. Now he had to hold himself to a certain level of decorum.

That meant he was just standing there when it happened. Hands tucked in his pockets; pretending to listen to the director discuss casting choices. A glance up and a smile caught his eye. One of the young actresses. Pale cheeks rosy as she laughed with a far less attractive creature. Then in that furtive way woman have she turned away again. Leaving Declan free to admire the perfect elegance of her spine. Bare from demure shoulders to tailbone. His fingers twitched around his glass. He was itching to spread his palm over that warm skin. Dark whiskey tugging at the edges of his psyche. Summer Sky not quite enough to keep the potent alcohol at bay.

Raising his brow to the director he nodded subtly towards the girls. The warlord didn’t remember their names, but his assistant did. Armed with that detail he made his way over. Bowing briefly to them both but turning his body, and focus, toward the willowy blonde he was really interested in. Sweeping his hair back with one hand Declan shot her with his best smile. Introductions, he was sure, were unnecessary. ”Good evening ladies. Enchanting performance tonight.”

Eyes on Horizon he stepped a hair closer. Careful of her curiously bare feet. ”Though I dare say, Lady Deliver, you’re twice as breathtaking off set.” He set his empty glass on a passing tray and tweaked his sleeves back down around his wrist. "Enjoying the party?"

Horizon let her champagne drift downward, held by the delicate crystal rim, base brushing the skirts that swirled around her thighs. It hadn't taken him long at all. She appreciated his speed, and the clever way he dismissed her not-quite-friend. Very bold of him, if a touch rude. Casting a not-quite-sorry smile at the other girl, Horizon dismissed her too.

"Why thank you, Prince Foxx." Her hips swiveled Horizon his direction. Skirts swaying around her legs, covering her toes before settling back around her ankles. He came closer, the other girl slinking away, and Horizon turned her face away, tilting it so she could look up at him from the corner of her eye. She slid an arm behind her back, grasping the other.

"Most girls do in their own clothes." So much more to her taste than most of the things she was forced to wear on stage. But Horizon loved the stage. She leaned into her own arm and shook her hair down her back. Tall tomato that he was, even she had to look up at him. Horizon didn't mind, he was nice to look at. "I am now. And yourself?" Her hips shimmied, just a little release of extra energy. Nervous energy. He was the territory escort. Man to the new queen.

Her skirts swirled again. Horizon drank. Arms straining against each other. Fingers digging into the flesh of one, the other fighting against it. He looked good over the flute. The glance and lights did strange, colorful things to his skin. Finally the one fell away. Unwinding from her back and falling to her side. Swinging until her fingertips nearly brushed him.

"I don't think I've seen you at one before." She would have remembered him, Horizon was sure. Tall, handsome tomato. Horizon tapped the rim of her glass against her bottom lip. "You seem to be out, would you like some of my champagne?" She offered, ignoring the waiter that passed just behind them. Tipping her glass in his direction. Foxx. Foxx. Horizon tried to remember his first name. She should know it, but couldn't remember.

Foxx was good though. Red haired little bandit.

”You’re quite welcome.” Declan faked a bored grin. It turned to a patronizing smirk that followed the other woman until she disappeared into the crowd. He had no use for that one. Horizon was the prettiest of the bunch and so far quite welcoming. Admiring the bashfulness she pretended at he swept her with is eyes again. Lips like those were certainly not shy, he was sure. But it looked good on her. Those sharp edged eyes turned furtive and her halo of white blond hair falling down her back.

His teeth flashed in a more honest smile. ”And out of them?” He asked. Amused at the opening she left for such a comment. Not quite so careful as a genuinely demure woman. That was alright. He still liked it. The coyness an ego stroke. He returned it with arrogance he didn’t fully feel. Leaning in as she wiggled. Probes telling him that she was excited. Interested. And that was exactly where he wanted her excitement and interest to stem from.

”It’s suddenly become much more diverting.” He answered. Smile faltering as she brought up the sting of his previous insignificance. Shoulders rolling he tried not to frown. It made his forehead pucker when he did. ”I’ve been Lady Wright’s personal escort since were just teenagers. She only had me before, now she has a whole court to look after and they look after her. Gives me a bit more free time.” There! That sounded like a mostly reasonable explanation.

Maybe the actress wouldn’t know much about court life anyway, though her caste made him doubt that. In his experience priestess always ended up doing court training at some point or another.

The offer of her glass appeased him, though. Temper set to rest before it could really rise. ”That’s a good start.” He smiled, taking the glass by the stem. A small sip while he tried not to make a face, because who really enjoyed champagne? Before he stepped a bit closer to give it back. His weight shifted as he slouched over her. ”I suppose you’ve been to plenty of these things. Are they always so tame?”

He expected a bit of dancing. So far the music was just setting a soft atmosphere while people gathered in groups to chat. He didn’t see the lead of the play anywhere though, or the writer. Perhaps things would pick up a bit later.

If not he’d just have to try convince Lady Deliver to make a party of their own somewhere else.

Horizon smiled, cheeks creasing the corners of her eyes. He was a wicked boy. She couldn’t even blush at his boldness, he was so honest in it. Smirking away her not-quite-friend and then saying such things to her. No. Horizon couldn’t blush, just grin. He seemed so very pleased with himself. Wicked boy. Maybe clever too. Yes that was it.

”I don’t think we’re supposed to say such things aloud,” Horizon teased. Knew that when she shrugged just so it made her breasts rise. Free beneath the silky fabric of her dress. She did look very good out of her clothes, it was true. Not all women could claim that. Horizon didn’t need to tell him that though. He probably knew it already, smirking clever Foxx.

”Has it?” She smiled. He must have been thinking about her naked. Horizon liked it when the men she liked thought of such things. ”Is it boring, having to babysit queens all the time?” Poor tomato. How dull having to attend to one lady all the time. A queen too. They could be quite exacting and fickle from what Horizon had seen. Court bored her dreadfully. All that fussing for no good reason.

He wasn’t boring though. Drinking from her glass as if it were his own. Horizon watched him, a brief expression of puzzlement flitting across her face. What was it a good start to? It was only a glass of champagne. That didn’t matter though, as he looked right over her. Returning the flute and pressing in all the closer. Horizon let them, toying with the shimmering fabric of her skirt. He smelled nice.

”No. But its early hours yet. The real fun doesn’t start until half the stiff shirts have gone home.” Too many proper ladies in attendance yet. Aristo daughters that weren’t to be exposed to their degradations. As if they too weren’t hoping for the same thing as everyone else. A nice, hair standing tumble by a good looking man. Or woman. Poor things.

”Bored already?” She questioned, body bowing to match the curve of his slouch. Aggressive tomato. ”Some of them get quite out of hand, but with Cassandra leading the play, you never know.” Now that was a fickle woman. Never could decide if she sober or not, ruining and making parties in turn.

Declan didn’t know if it was more alluring or frustrating. That thin layer of nearly nothing between dressed and undressed. The subtle outline of her nipple rising and falling as she shrugged in more displays of her pretend shyness. She hadn’t even blushed once.

Head tilting he shrugged back at her. A rolling of his shoulders and bobbing of one eyebrow. ”Why not?” No one was going to make him keep his opinions to himself. He was a man grown. Not that he hadn’t run off at the mouth since toddlerhood. If Van couldn’t keep him from it, no one would. Well… Maybe if his lips were busy with something else, he thought with another sly grin.

”Yes, very.” Something in the way she smiled hinted that she had guessed his thoughts. Perhaps it was the way he had been staring at her mouth. Or her tits. There wasn’t much of them so far as he could tell but that excited him too. Small was good for fitting in the palm of your hand. Licking his lips he ran his forefinger across his chin with a sigh. ”Sometimes. Depends on the queen, really. Mine’s not so bad.”

Though she did read more than he thought any person should. And never ate as much as he thought she needed to. Van could be a lot of fun when she had a mind to it. She had her funny little secrets she thought he didn’t know, and she was good at putting his temper right. Kept him from making an ass of himself. That was enough to make court life bearable.

Plus he got to wear nice suits.

She stumbled over his teasing but Declan thought it likely for the best. At least she glided seamlessly over the hiccup. Unaware that he meant the champagne was only the start of all the things he’d like from the lady. Maybe his slipping closer was making fake shyness real. He held very still, no twitching or fidgeting to make her nervous while he tried to feel her out. Only his eyes moving to watch her painted nails as they played with the dress she wore. It was fine, he decided, she was just feeling him out too.

With a sound of relief he nodded as she assured him the party had yet to heat up. ”Only half? What happens to the rest, or will we find them hanging out to dry by morning?” He joked. Chin touching his shoulder as he shrugged again. Lips pursing then smoothing to a smile. ”Not with you,” How could anyone be bored with someone so delectable to look at? ”Well, we won’t get too rowdy. Reputations and all. I could do with a dance, or a good drinking game, though.”

Maybe she played cards. Or even better, failed abysmally at them so he could lure her out of those clothes. ”How about you, lady? What does a pretty actress do to pass the time at events like this?”

”I don’t rightly know.” Horizon answered, taking the question more seriously than she probably ought. It didn’t hold her attention long, however. Or worry her much at all. That hadn’t been the point anyway, not of her scolding and probably not of his answer. He didn’t seem very serious anyway, maybe he was a silly tomato on top of an interested one.

Very interested, Horizon thought, watching his eyes.

”That is good to hear. I’d hate to think our territory was in the hands of someone boring.” She didn’t really want to talk about the queen though. Politics only interested Horizon when they directly effected her. Currently they did not beyond Prince Tomato serving in the newly formed Territory Court, and Horizon’s shared interest in his services. Whether they were one in the same to his queen wasn’t something she worried her thought on.

Nothing outside their small bubble mattered much at the moment. His gaze sharpening. Horizon’s skin prickled, almost as if she could feel his looking. Or maybe it was his curious stillness, broken, finally, by a sigh. Horizon giggled, an airy rather than high, coy sound. Tapping the side of her nose, she shook her head.

”That is not to be spoken of. Trade secrets.” They would gossip about it heartily among themselves, but not with outsiders. Which he still was, and forever would be unless he gave up queens and joined the stage instead. Horizon thought he would be very shocking beneath the lights, and possibly do quite well. But even if he was an outsider, she still lapped up his praise, turning on the balls of her feet so her shoulder was closer to him.

”It’s always nice to outshine an entire party.” Horizon wished it was later in the evening. When there were more empty bottles than there were glasses to be filled. When a person could be properly hedonistic without all the tattle tales watching. Then she wouldn’t have had to flirt with him over her shoulder. ”I don’t mind starting the dancing.” Horizon thought she’d be forgiven that by Cassandra the bitch, should she arrive.

A tap to the band woke the music up some, and Horizon slipped her hand into his. Fingers curling around fingers as she drew him toward the open space in the room, abandoning she champagne along the way. Horizon spun herself into his body, the move practiced from a long ago part in the background. Arms winding around her waist until she settled near but not quite, into his chest. She released his hand to take his shoulder, the other pressing palm to palm.

”Whatever everyone else is doing usually.” Horizon loved watching as much as partaking. She never needed to be the center of the circle to feel fulfilled by it. She settled into an easy rhythm with him, not an accomplished dancer by any means, but a perfectly good actress. She did so hope Cassandra hurried up. And Lord Maverick. Hoped they weren’t coming together. That would just be too sickening and cliche.

”See, we have started a trend you and I.” Others joined them. A sea of swirling skirts growing around them. With more bodies in the mix, Horizon let herself come closer. She wanted to feel what sort of body was hiding beneath that polished suit. Fabric whispering together until she bit her lip, jacket pocket brushing against her breast. Suddenly she didn’t very much care about the particulars.

”I do like watching what everyone gets up.” Horizon admitted, without so much as glancing at anyone else. ”It is much different than your palace parties? We’re all waiting on a ladies pleasure here too.” Hurry up, Cassandra! Horizon could be forgiven for slinking away before the writer, but the lead actress was temperamental and dangerous.

A rousing of the crowd. Clapping and cheering. Horizon squeezed him tight.

”Quick, look like you care!” She turned with the throng to praise those who had made the play such a rousing success. Good, they had not come together. Cassandra dominating the room as always, a pale beauty of a man on her arm. ”I do believe the party is going to get more interesting tonight.”

Declan was even less eager to discuss Van, or Little Kaeleerian politics, than his pretty new friend. One eyebrow rose to dismiss the subject. Letting her statement roll on unanswered into the night. It was growing clearer by the second that they had other things on their minds. The same thing, actually. Or at least he hoped.

He had never coped well with blistering disappointment. And he would be mighty disappointed if this girl was just using him the way some did. Waiting for the man they really wanted to come in and see them with someone else. Someone important. Or only flirting because she could. That was really the worst. Left standing alone at the end of the night so some trollop could feel an inch of self importance.

That wasn’t his life anymore, though. He was a man now, not an awkward gangling boy trying to balance a queen that didn’t need his sex with all the girls that pretended they did to see if they could get a tug his leash. Females were decidedly complicated. Horizon didn’t seem quite that conniving. At the very least she was genuinely interested right now. Or a very good actress. Her part was too short for him to actually know for sure. She giggled and wiggled at his compliments prettily, that would have to be enough. ”I should think you’d be used to it by now. Face- and figure, like that. You could have stolen center stage if you wanted.”

How had the prop boys managed to keep the spotlight on anyone else?

”Then allow me,” He offered his palm and she slipped her slender hand into it. Skin soft in that way well kept girls had. The subtle work of lotions and moisturizing creams. It made him wonder where else she might be rubbing such things. If it made her taste like cosmetics, or if the salt would bleed through. Dancing was one of those arts that could make or break an escort. Thankfully Declan was lighter on his feet than his long limbs suggested. It made up for several other skills he lacked. Whatever tongues might wag about his patronizing humor or poor conversational skills, the man could hold his own in a waltz.

He liked the way she spun around into his arms. They didn’t do a dance of any named sort, but that was alright. Declan slipped his arm around her waist. Whisking them off towards the center of the floor. Taking the lead had never frightened him any. During their few minutes as the lone pair on the dance floor he imagined they were quite a striking pair. Their movements matching the rhythm of the beat without taking definitive structure. Court dancing was different. It had rules. This was just fun. They even chatted between twirls and half dips as he tried to worm her nearer. Let his hand settle lower on her hip. ”Except tonight?” He asked. She might usually be a follower, doing what the crowd did. Tonight it was just as she said. They were starting a trend.

”Good. I like being part of the background. That’s where all the real fun happens.” He told her with a thin smile. Around them bodies started to fall into pace with the music. Privacy by way of being less conspicuous. Privacy Horizon quickly put to good use. Finally slinking closer. He didn’t waste any time either. Fingers skimming so slow he might as well have grabbed her ass. Eyes glinting with mischief as he waited for a reaction.

”They seem mostly the same. Except you can’t count on a court event to get rowdy. Everything’s all proper and prim from go to gone.” Once in a while, if the drinks were really flowing, you might get a group in one of the upper rooms getting wild. It was rare, and inclusion was extremely selective. The rumor mill ran on political affairs. One wrong incident could slaughter a good young man’s reputation. The ladies were safer due to their necessity. A queen still needed the support of her people, though, and they were a stupid bunch that lived for such gossip.

”Oh, I care.” He promised without looking away. Fingers flexing over the fabric of her dress. Eyes looking down instead of over. ”Just not about them.” Still, he gave a genial nod when the miniature parade passed by. The play had been entertaining, after all. It wasn’t this Cassandra’s fault that Declan had found a much more satisfying amusement afterwards.

He let Horizon go just long enough to twitch his sleeve’s down. ”I hope it gets more interesting quick. Or else we’ll have to make a party of our own.” Somewhere else. Alone. With a different sort of dancing. He knew a fine hotel not far away. ”Another dance? Here comes another round of drinks if you prefer.” He waved a hand at an approaching server.

”You’re a very good flatterer.” Horizon swept her lashes at him coyly. Oh Tomato! Her smile was small on her lips, but there was a hint of tongue in it, just between her lips, so that they looked fuller. Wetter. ”I like a good bit of flattery same as the next girl.” More, probably, since her professional success practically hinged on it. And Horizon did so want to be successful.

”Happy to.” And she was. Swirling as they made the dance floor theirs. A subtle exploration of bodies. He was a good lead, drawing Horizon out rather than dragging her. Testing limits. Shoulders sweeping near even with her hips as he dipped her. Hip rising to meet his hand. She was flush without being breathless. And he never once trod on her toes. ”A good partner can lead a girl to do plenty of things outside her usual.” They weren’t her own words, but Horizon thought they suited.

She couldn’t remember the name of the play she’d heard them in. Or had it been a book? She read them sometimes when she was too bored for anything else. Or too poor.

”Is it?” She felt the shape of his body with hers. Shivering just a little as his hand settled over her curves possessively. Tomato, Horizon thought, was ripe for the picking. She let her cheek rest on his shoulder for a moment, drinking him in. He smelled nice. Like good soap and fancy cologne. ”How dull for you,” she sympathized, smoothing a bit of red hair with her finger.

Blushing at his boldness. It was fine for him not to care, but Horizon had to. Easing from his grip to curtsy properly to the true belle of the ball. Another part played, Tomato already reclaiming her attention. He really was the best sort of flatterer. He made a girl feel one of a kind.

”We’ll see, she doesn’t look sour.” Horizon hedged hopefully. One never could tell with that particular diva. ”Why not both? Another drink, another twirl, and she’ll have made up her mind I bet.” Horizon’s was already made up. Boring or not, she’d be leaving this party with this man. She slipped her arm around his, draping herself on it without really hanging on him. So he’d know. Drink gobbled up so she could giggle in his arms again. See how far down he’d dare to reach this time.

”At least court life has made you an excellent dance partner, Prince Flatterer.” She let her thumbnail trace the skin behind his ear. Hand on his shoulder, proper as all else. But there was no room between their bodies anymore. And too many other couples around them for anyone to notice or care. Cassandra’s laughter louder than the music. Yes. Once the outsiders left, the party would be voracious. Horizon was sorry she couldn’t watch it with him. She thought he might like it.
