long walks on the beach

If she looked like a tourist enjoying the beach it was on accident. Loose hair skimming her shoulders Hypatian wicked the sparse beads of sweat up into her hairline with a flat palm. Eyes as grey as the ocean horizon they stared blankly towards. A storm seemed to be approaching but she hadn’t quite realized it yet. Lost in her own thoughts.

And maybe just a little bit actually lost.

Shalador was not a territory she had explored much. There just wasn’t enough information about the long-lived in short-lived territories. Things had gotten… complicated in Hayll, though, and fleeing over the border had been the quickest means of escape.

Almades was beautiful this time of year. Those last few weeks of spring when the air started to get heavy with summer heat. Nasty weather rolled in from the shore every few weeks, cleaning the streets and clearing them of people. It made a good setting to study the samples she had collected in Hayll. And to sell the potent brews she crafted without much notice.

Except by the old widow she was renting a room from. Thankfully she was a sad, rheumy woman with aching joints. Instead of marks Tia paid in brews that eased the hurt. With a side effect of unconsciousness. Today the old woman was temple bound for prayers. Which worked in the young woman’s favor.

The fumes put out from the illicit brew she was condensing to a powder were noxious. Hence her unintended day of lounging on the beach. People were interesting, even the short-lived ones. So she had done some staring while walking the shore. Losing her sandals and her way in the process. When her legs got tired she sat in the sand. Coarse granules spilled into her skirt, their gritty warmth rasping against her thighs and filtering between her toes.

When the wind started to pick up the other beach goers packed up for home. Not Hypatian. Too absorbed in a method of isotope isolation she wanted to try. For now her workstation was dedicated to bringing in a bit of money. She’d had to leave her microscope behind in Hayll.

Still, she daydreamed of the work she couldn’t do until a flock of white birds came sweeping in from the sea. Their shrill calls drawing her eyes upwards. The darkening skies finally noticed, she shifted to stand. Scanning the shore she faced the way she had come. Beach mostly bare she frowned in disappointment when a touch of Craft failed to bring her missing shoes. Maybe you had to know where they were for the spell to work?

Crows broke the bushes. Thorns and feathers filling the air. It was like a wave that rose up and crashed through the twisting wall. The sound a whisper. A broken glass. A thousand beating hearts. Rahul stopped, a new path opening where the birds had flown. The vines that had once blocked his path, or shaped it, like dust on his feet. Shards ground to sand.

He found shoes. Sandals laid out as if feet were about to walk into them. Slippers at the end of a bed. Except these were pointed to the sea. Brows low, Rahul bent and picked them just as a wave tasted their toes. He looked at the sea, and the sea looked back. Water brackish green, froth angry. He tongued his cheek, gave it a bow, and followed the surf down the beach.

The sandals twitched. Rahul held tighter. He flinched from the growing wetness on one side. Into the hard points in the other. No going back. The path was this way and quickly flooding. So dark he nearly summoned witchlights, but he was used to twilight living. Brows pinched but eyes wide to see, she came out of the darkness as if he had run her down. Suddenly.

Fog then woman, her skirts tasting his knees before he stopped. Rahul held tighter to the sandals. His body itching. His psyche on fire with it.

”Here.” He thrust them at her, straps looped around his fingers. The path parted. Shape changed as vines rearranged themselves, thorns curving. ”That way.” He pointed, away from licking fluid salt that tugged at his ankles. Away from the roaring sea, churned by rain that beat its waves down and rushed toward the shore to beat that too. ”Probably fast.” He added.

Clear Skies was a potent drug Hypatian’s mother had concocted, sold, and named herself. Mostly because it was pale blue in the glass vials they sold a single dose in. Though it had always been a running joke that it was named because even in a thunderstorm you’d only see clear skies while you were laid out on your back.

Her mother had taken as much of it as she had sold. So it was also a running joke that Hypatian was a brew brained weirdo. Still, she she was fairly sure she wasn’t half so strange as this man.

From afar she had tried to avoid their paths crossing. Meandering towards the shore, then up to the dry beach grass. He came at her anyway. Without really looking at all. As if he followed a road she couldn’t see that led him straight to her.

So she stopped, waiting to see if he would keep going. Walk right by her perhaps. Or if he was a customer she didn’t recognize that wanted another dose before the last had worn off. She rarely remembered them to begin with, but being new put her at even more of a disadvantage. And addicts were dangerous when they were angry.

When he finally reached her Hypatian watched in timid amusement at the way his eyes slowly focused. Standing so close she had stepped back to keep him from crashing their bodies together. Plaintive whips of Craft tried to call her shoes back in case she had to run. ”Oh.” Her gaze drifted down.

Sandals dangling from his fingertips like snare bait from a tree. Her lips twisted while she poked him in the chest with a nosy probe. Insides trembling at the hints she found. Jewels much deeper than her own. The absent way he spoke caught her attention, though, and the gleam of gold in his eyes held it. ”Okay.” Grabbing the strangers shoulder for support Hypatian slipped her shoes back over the soles of her feet. Straps secured while she held him for balance.

Then the rain was on them. Bitterly cold as it nipped her skin. She squealed, throwing a shield over herself to keep the worst of it out and followed the way he pointed his finger. Maybe he knew where she was staying. She’d wonder why later.

There was touching. It happened so rarely.  In another time he might have cupped her elbow to help steady her, and to stroke her skin. Looked down the loose oval of her neckline to see what could be seen. Now Rahul stood still, leaning away from the sea, eyes suspicious of her fingers on his shoulder. Moving as soon as she let go.

Wet, wet, and more wet. Cold, fat drops from the sky that slapped, and angry swirls of salt at their heels. Rahul put a palm at her back, against the shield she had spun to protect her from the same. Pushed to keep her moving, shepherding from the back, directing with grunts and barked orders, and pressure against her shield. He never wove one for him, just got wet and wetter. Slicked, slapped and snagged by the path he ushered them down.

Back into the town. Under a wide patio where people had gathered to watch the storm. He dripped on the wood, vision narrowing to avoid all the people. Distractions that tugged at and disturbed him. His fingers curled, as if he would hold her shield like a scrap of cloth. Caught the back of her dress instead.

”This is the place.” He told the back of her head before letting go. Back the way they had come the sea frothed. Spitting foam and water so far up the beach it dragged soil instead of sand back to the sea with it. Rahul looked, and shuddered. It was too familiar. Turning away he dripped his way inside the inn, brushing past onlookers. He would need a room, surely. Path too foggy to follow now.
