Whispers & Sunsets

Little Terreille’s constant chatter was a distant underlying hum, drifting through the open windows of her office on cool afternoon breezes and drawing her away from the stack of papers on her desk. Trouble in the outer districts. Whispers of a thing, Ghislaine had hoped Magda’s flames had stomped out. Rot trickling through the province and making her queens panic. None close enough to the capital, none close enough to turn her away from her plans of relaxation for the evening.

Jack was more than capable of handling the fall out for one night. A selfish thought perhaps but it was one Ghislaine was intending to entertain. A neatly penned note - “Investigate these with discretion as always, Prince Wildacre.” - was all she left atop the stacks of panic-stricken reports before sweeping from the room and out to her own suite into the waiting hands of her maids.

The layers of skirts and petticoats were easily shed, her maids tugging at the laces of her corsets and the pins holding her hair up. A few moments longer before they released her to the solitude of her bath, the door clicking shut behind her. *Rainier, no more work for today.* she whined across a private thread. *Not unless it’s urgent* And even then, the province wouldn’t crumble if she stopped paying attention for the evening.

The threat of pruning was the one thing that drove her out of her bath finally and into the embrace of an overly fluffy towel first and then a robe that was more lace than substance and out to fling open her bedroom windows to the setting sun. Leaning against the window frame she sighed, tugging the lacy robe tighter. An illusion of modesty and nothing more. An illusion only just ruined by the still damp curls clinging to her shoulders and down her back and turning the already scandalous thing transparent in spots.

He’d not argue with that decision. Usually he had to bribe his queen into resting, that she’d decided to so on her own was a relief. And a worry. *No more work.* He promised. Not even if it was urgent. What did she have a full court for if someone else couldn’t shoulder some of the burdens on occasion? They would just have to see how well her new steward handled pressure.

Rainier gave her enough time to bathe in peace. And himself time enough to subtly position the rest of the court where he thought they would he most useful. The hard of head had to be outright ordered under threat of rank, but most submitted meekly. Ghislaine was a queen people preferred pleasing than not, and Rainier was always looking to do what pleased her most.

Except when it suited him to be a fussing nuisance, since sometimes that was just what the lady needed. And him too.

”You’re going to end up with a box full of love letters and scandalized mother’s if you keep that up, love.” He came in without knocking, slipping through the crack in the door. There was no need to be discreet any longer, not with a consort’s ring for his Winsol present. But Rainier had no wish to share his prize, which is exactly wha he would have been doing if he’d opened the door.

”I think the moths got to your robe, Ghislaine.” He teased softly, hands cupping her hips, and chin resting on her shoulder. He could feel the damp spreading to his own clothing, but paid it no mind. Just added a touch of warming craft to the room. And tried closing the shutters. ”Look, the stable boys been trod on already.” Grinning, Rainier turned his face into her neck.

There was dire news enough outside her bedroom. He didn’t plan on bringing anymore here to worry her with.

“Worried someone might try to steal me away?” It was a half hearted tease, tossed over her shoulder as she continued to survey her domain. Quiet, so very quiet almost to the point where she could fool herself into believing the outside turmoil was a dream. A fool’s hope so much so that the distraction of secret admirers and politely worded irritation from concerned mother’s made her smile. “I do hope they’d know better at any rate considering I’m happily taken.”

Leaning back against Rainier, Ghislaine’s laugh was light not even bothering to object to the shutters being closed. “Shame that, on both accounts.” Tilting her head away to expose her neck further to his attentions. “Pity, they won’t even get a final peek to make the pain worth it.” She was grinning now, twisting to face him fully now.

“I’ll have you know that my moths are quite skilled and fashionable, love.” She scolded, though it was more of an answering tease than anything. “And if I remember correctly, you didn’t exactly object when I had it made.”

A pause, long enough for a pout to start tugging at her lips and Ghislaine turned her full attention on him. “I could, if it bothers you, abandon it now?”

”Only when you’re quite irritated with me.” Was his answering taunt, relaxing at the banter. If she had been too distraught, Rainier doubted she’d have managed such teasing. The bath seemed to have done her some good. And the panic had not gone far, the encroachment small so far. There was still hope that they wouldn’t have to set fire to their entire province.

Still no proof that fire would work.

”A man will always hope, even against all odds.” She could surely inspire such bullheaded fantasies, his queen. A delicate, primal figure in her robe that was more gauzy suggestion than actual covering. Rainier’s eyes lingered at all the curves and hollows as he approached. Eyes closing as she leaned into his closeness until they were molded together, front to back. All those sweet places he’d admired pressed into him.

”There are healers to see to their hurts.” She was his, lips on her neck to prove it, shutters clicking softly together, latch falling soundlessly in place. In the dimmed light he could smell her better. Hands roaming down from shoulders to hips, then sliding around her waist as she turned. Stroking her lower back and the damp ends of her hair, Rainier pressed a kiss to her pale forehead.

”Of course you have trained your moths, just as you’ve trained your cats. Will it be spiders and flies next?” He pulled the lacey collar from her neck, exposing her bare shoulder. Too close now for him to glimpse other things, and his shirt and jacket suddenly too thick for proper feeling. ”I was not expecting you to stand in front of open windows in it.” He defended with a smile, tipping her chin up so he could kiss the forming pout.

”It bothers me mightily, lady.” Fingers trailing her jaw to her ear. Rainier tucked a strand behind the pink shell and stepped back. She would need room to shrug free of the thing. And he so wanted to watch it fall away. Body outlined and shadowed by the patchwork lace of the robe. Sheer creases taunting him. She was amazingly beautiful, his cunning mistress. Rainier spun the ring on his finger before unbuttoning his coat and casting it aside, the room suddenly too warm.

Silly hopeful things that stroked her ego at the best of times. Ghislaine put them from her mind. They were hardly the ones she’d chosen as her consort, thus no concern of hers. Definitely no concern of hers with Rainier’s hands roaming, lips on her neck and again on her forehead threatening to make her smile as much as she wanted to keep pouting. “All black widows keep spiders, tiny little things to keep an eye on our apprentices.” Running her fingers up his arm for effect.

“Mm it’s warm enough.” she murmured into the kiss. Warm enough to get away with the robe and entirely too warm now.

“Then I’ll keep it on.” If only for the moment, her pout turning to a smile as she made to slip past him and back into the bed room proper. Ghislaine’s hand was feather-light on Rainier’s chest just enough pressure to be teasing before she retreated to safer distances. Or as safe a distance she could get without outright slipping out the room.

“Did you have dinner, love?” An innocent enough question, sent sidelong while she meandered to her dresser letting the robe slip off her shoulders properly but still not off.
