She hadn't known what to expect when she arrived in the Province of Dendrabelle, but she didn't expect the wave of nostalgia and homesickness that washed over her at seeing the lush dense forests. True she had lived most of her life in Dharo, but it had never been home, not really. Her 'family' had seen to that. Io sighed and shook her head, trying to clean her mind of such thoughts. Her old family didn't matter anymore. For good or ill they were gone.

She reached up to wipe away a stray tear that had slipped past her defenses and took a deep breath before pushing forward through the small crowd of people that milled around the street. Yes, they were gone. Some lay cold and forgotten in the forests and hills of Dena Nehele, an entire Realm away, while others found themselves resting in the cold embrace of the mountains the Temple of Erebus call home. Even her brother was gone, the only person who had ever loved her for just herself, for just being. Io shallowed thickly at the memory of his death and shook her head a second time. No, that wasn't true. It might have been at one time, where Phoroneus had been the only to love her, but now she had her chosen family. She had Mauki.

'Do you though? You left that family behind.' she stopped her treck forward to lean against a nearby building, fighting against the despair the inner voice threatened to conjure. Yes, she had left them, left Mauki, but she'd had to. They had been coming for her, and she knew that Mauki at least wouldn't have let them take her without a fight. A fight that he wouldn't have won. She'd seen it, too vividly. It was always so despairing that the things that were most vivid in her webs were negative and painful.

So she'd run. Thankfully she had not had to run alone, though Nyree had been less than grateful for her company. The cold shoulder hadn't bothered Io in the least. In a way, she felt she deserved it, for leaving as she was. True, she'd left a note for Mauki, but she knew it wouldn't do much to soothe the sting of her departure or absence. Six months. She'd been away from him for six months. Or wasn't five? Seven? She wasn't sure anymore, and that made her heart hurt. She lifted a hand to toy at a strange looking piece of jewelry that hung at her throat, her slim fingers gliding over its smooth surface. A piece of petrified wood that had been polished till it looked like a gem, something that Mauki had found while out and about and given to her shortly before she'd left. She gave it one last caress before she moved from the building she'd been leaning against and continued to make her way to the inn where she'd be staying.

The web she'd woven to help her track down and locate Mauki had been vague about where she might find him. A lush land of forests blanketed in opal, surrounded by gray. A land of burning and growing. There had also been the barest hint of cold. These clues had led her to Little Terreille and then to Dendrabelle. The whisper of cold had her heading towards the border between Little Terreille and Glacia, and common sense dictated that Mauki would need to rest or eat at some point, hence the inn. She glanced up when said inn came into view and smiled softly as she drew near. It had been a long day of roaming streets and shops, mental threads extended, searching for the distinct familiar feel of the man she loved, but she had found nothing.

As she stepped through the inn's doors, the familiar buzz of conversations filled her ears, almost successfully drowning out her thoughts and feelings of another fruitless day. She'd only made it a couple of steps into the inns main social and dining area when a familiar scent drifted past her, and she inhaled deeply, her eyes widening as she turned to look around the room. She would have known that scent if she'd been away for a year, five, ten. She reached out tentatively with psychic threads of Yellow, too light a Jewel to really draw any attention to herself from anyone other than the one she sought. searching, reaching, hoping.

"Mauki...." his name was lost to the crowded room, but still she searched.

Tama had gone ahead, across the border to see what it was like on the other side. Mooki had resisted. Standing with his jaw jutting on the Little Terreille side of the border, hands stuffed into his pockets and hair pulled into disarray. It had been a staring contest, two wills butting against each other in silence. Or near silence. Quick, curt words before Tama had kept going and Mooki had turned back.

He’d catch up later. Maybe. Mooki was still mad at Nyree. Glad as he was she was safe, even if she was with Enele, he wasn’t ready to see her yet. His heart was just too full of bitterness for that reunion. He was curious why the letter hadn’t mentioned Io. That had almost convinced him to go, so he could ask. But the answer wouldn’t change anything.

She’s left too.

Mooki went back to the inn. It was nice to have a room to himself. Unusual, but nice. He’d stretched out on the bed, half drowsing the rest of the morning away until hunger drove him downstairs. He slipped at the bottom step, caught between the railing and another male going up the stairs. Lip curling, Mooki snarled in silence, tucking his shoulder away and stomping into the crowd.

He hadn’t met a single Little Terreillian he’d liked. They were all rude, pompous and deceitful. Especially deceitful. Scowling, he slid between tables, careful to avoid contact with anyone else. Physical and eye both. Scratching his wrist, Mooki slipped into a seat and slumped at the table, hoping the girl taking orders would be quick about. His itching fingers moved from his wrist to his hair, something annoying the back of his neck.

It was a thread, he realized. Not invasive, so it wasn’t the direct sort. Shoulders hunching, Mooki looked over his shoulder. And then he stood up, chair banging into the back of some else’s seat, but Mooki didn’t notice. She was standing there, the last person he had ever expected to see. ”Io?”

She heard him before he spotted her. Or at least, she'd thought it was him. If there could be anything telling about the sound someone made when they felt, it was Mooki. She hadn't seen who had fallen or where they'd gone after, but something about the event drew her attention, the sound triggering a memory that had her heart racing. Sweet, adorable, clumsy Mooki.

'Whom you left.' she cursed softly, trying to ignore the voice in her head. 'Even if you do find him, what makes you think he wants to see you, let alone take you back.' she squeezed her eyes shut against the truth in the words her mind spoke, as hurtful as they were.

A tug from one of the cast out threads pulled her from her own mind and thoughts and she focused on the pull, the direction it was coming from. The threads she sent out had been looking for Mooki specifically, and wouldn't have 'attached' themselves to just anyone. After a moment she was able to get a feeling for where he was in the room but she couldn't make herself turn towards him. Couldn't stop the pounding of her heart from ringing in her ears. He was so close. All she had to do was turn.

The sound of a chair being pushed back from a table suddenly caused her to stiffen. He'd seen her. She swallowed thickly and willed herself to turn in his direction, her head lifting slowly as she moved her gaze upward, worried brown meeting surprised blue. She heard her name slip past his lips, reaching her ears even over the raised voices of the people around them. Her heart skipped a beat, and her breath caught in her throat. He was the same, and yet, he wasn't. There was a weary sadness in his eyes and she clutched at the wood around her throat, knowing she was at least partially responsible for it.

Slowly she made her way through the throng of people, excusing herself as she squeezed passed other patrons until she was only an arms span away from him. She hadn't looked away from him since they'd first locked gazes, but now she wished she could look anywhere but at him. After a moment of starting, took a deep breath then bit her lips none too gently.

"Mauki....it's, it's good to see you again."

It was torment watching her come closer. In a way it was like watching her leave. Each step a reminder of all the distance that had grown between them just as they had been growing close. It made his back ache, spine straight, muscles stiff, blunt nails digging into the soft wood of the chair. Sturdy enough to hold up a person, but it gave easily to knife blades and fingernails.

Around them the room kept moving. No one seemed to notice, or care if they did. People shifted out of Io’s way with a mixture of indifference and passing curiosity. She was a beautiful woman after all, beautiful and alone, as far as Mooki or they could tell. It upset him that she was alone, out here in the backwaters of Little Terreille where she could easily be lost and never found again. Made him frown, nails scraping against the back of the chair as he let go.

”Is it?” She didn’t look the least bit happy. Surprised and maybe a little frightened. It made Mooki suspicious, suspicious and unkind. He wanted her to be happy to see him! Happy so that he could show her how unhappy he was in comparison. Hurt her back, somehow, for leaving him. Not trusting him enough to keep them both safe from whatever fears her webs had stirred up.

”Where’s your escort, Io?” Was there some man still to come down the stairs or inside from the out? He knew Nyree wasn’t with her, Nyree was with Enele, who had started this whole mess. Enele who should have kept his filthy hands off Mooki’s sister. Was someone putting their filthy hands on Io? Did she like it? Or was she being foolish and trotting around the realm alone, waiting to be... ”You should have an escort.”

She felt the tension and hurt rolling off him in waves and she fought to not look away from him. His words, the first words she'd heard from him other than her name, were sharp and dripping with bitterness and Io found herself flinching. She deserved his ire, any hurt his words or tone caused. But not for the reasons he might have thought. She'd had to leave. He would have tried to protect her, to fight her family, and he would have died. Her webs were never more clear than when they were predicting tragedy, and if Mooki had fought her father, he would not have survived. So she would take his anger, and his cold bitter tone and she would hold them close to her, and wrap herself in them because at least he was alive.

She tried to force a smile when he questioned her about her escort, picking up on the unasked question. Are you alone? Are you with someone else? Have you found someone else to protect you because you didn't think I could? SShe wanted nothing more than to reach out and cup his cheek in her palm. To feel his skin against hers and offer him what comfort she could. He might be angry and hurt, but he was still Mooki, still worrying about her safety, though he would probably be worried about any woman who chose to travel alone. he briefly wondered if he'd found someone else to protect, to hold, and kiss softly in the warmth of the summer sun. Someone who would melt under the gentle caress' of large callused hands, but she pushed those thoughts away so that she could focus on answering his questions.

"I am very glad to see you, though if I'm hesitant, it's because I wasn't sure of my welcome, as justified as you would be to not want to see me again." she paused and glanced away, her delicate hands clasped nervously in front of her. "And I travel alone, have, since Nyree and I went our separate ways in Dena Nehele." Just as she was able to hear the questions unspoken in his words, she hoped he was able to hear the hidden answers in her own. There is no one else. There never was or will be. She pried her hands apart and placed one on the chair in front of her. "May I sit? If it's agreeable to you, we have a lot to talk about, and I owe you, at the very least, an explanation."

It was too many words. They buzzed in his ears and filled his head with stuffing. Mooki watched Io’s mouth shape them. Watched her hands twist in front of her, clasping each other like lovers. Brows tipping in toward each other, Mooki followed her glance, trying to find a face in the crowd that was watching them. Did she have an escort then? But Io said not, even if her eyes looked elsewhere.

”You shouldn’t be traveling alone.” He would speak to Nyree about that; when he was speaking to her again. It was easier to focus on that than what came before. He met her eyes briefly, pulling a chair away from the table as she took ahold of another. ”Of course.” No. Yes. Maybe. Mooki wasn’t sure. Facing her made all feelings he’d when she left somehow both sharper and fuzzy.

He didn’t want to talk about any of it, never mind the half dozen accusations that sat on the tip of his tongue. All the hurt and anger he’d been walking Kaeleer with. Sitting like toads in the back of his throat, waiting for their chance to escape. His elbows brushed the table edge as his arms folded over its top, fingers looping together. His face was hot at the idea of hearing all her excuses in person, hers in the middle of a crowd.

”I read your letter.” He wiped his bottom lip, damp from being sucked at petulantly. ”Didn’t that cover everything?” A serving woman approach the table then. Mooki’s shoulders rolled forward, ready to wave her away, his stomach wouldn’t stand food. But Io was at the table too, and the Jeweled Blood always needed more food than he did. Though he usually kept up quite well. He had hollow legs, according to his mother.

”You want something?” He asked, head tipping toward the witch.

She tried not to finch inwardly at his terse tone, but inwardly she blanketed herself with his anger. While she wasn't sorry for what she'd done, she was sorry for the pain she'd caused him, Leaving had been
the right thing to do. It had likely saved her life and had definitely saved his. While the conflict had followed her from Dena Nehele to Dharo, she'd only just barely survived the last encounter with her family, and her brother hadn't been so lucky.

She did finch when he mentioned the letter she'd left him and she struggled to find words to answer his question. His next question was easier to answer, so she focused on that, as she tried desperately to find words to give for the first "Oh, um, tea would be nice, thank you. Please be sure to add it to my rooms bill. It's under Potamoi."

Once the witch had taken her order, she waited to see if Mooki would order something as well.  When it appeared he wasn't interested, Io signed softly and placed clasped hands on the table. "No, the letter didn't cover everything. I told you I had to go, that I had things I had to do, but not what or why, and not why I had to go without you." She paused as the serving women brought her the tea she ordered she thanked her, then waited until she left to continue. "I owe you that much...I owe you so much more than that, but most importantly, I owe you an apology."

She looked up at him from the steaming cup of liquid in front of her, her normally warm brown eyes sad with a sheen of tears that threatened to fall. "I'm so sorry I hurt you. I didnt mean to. I didn't want to. I...I'm just....." she let her head fell forward so her chin rested against her chest, a single tear leaving a wet trail down her cheek. "I'm sorry."

Mooki ran his thumb over a ragged piece of skin. It was dry and hard, prickling his callous. A mindless distraction from the strangeness of sitting across from Io. The table between them a physical representative for the distance and troubles between them. He was all over uncomfortable, eyes looking away into the crowd as she ordered. Unwilling to even let him pay for her tea.

Both women looked at him expectantly. Eyebrows careening toward each other, Mooki shook his head, too unsettled now for food or drink. Finger to his lips, Mooki bit the dead skin from it, half looking and half avoid Io over the curve of his knuckles. How he hated that damn letter.

”Alright.” He mumbled before putting his hands away. He rubbed the tendon in his wrist, unsure of himself. Everything with Io had always been different. New, uncharted territory that had often left him unsure of himself. He was even more so now. Tea delivered but untouched, Io promised him an apology and Mooki wasn’t sure he wanted it. Mostly he wanted things to go back to the way they’d been before everyone had left.

”Io. Don’t cry.” Mooki whispered across the table to her. He was burning up with shame and embarrassment, eyes darting to see who looked. Not sure why her tears made him feel so damn guilty. He hadn’t left! It had been Nyree and Io running off in the middle of the night without goodbyes. Just a couple of vague letters that made sure those left behind knew they had gone willingly.

”Apology accepted, now will you quit doing that?” Flustered. Anger warring with hurt and ridden by an unbearable sense of urgency. No one was looking. No one cared. Mooki rubbed his face, hair sticking up as he scraped his scalp. She was sorry. He was sorry too. ”Its fine.” He lied, blinking as he heard the echo of his sister in it. All the times she’d promised everything was fine too. And really it hadn’t been. And it wasn’t now.

”I didn’t die or anything.” He added lamely. It might have been easier if he had. It sure had felt like it, with his heart ripped right out of his body like that. ”Where did you go, anyway?” And why? Why, why, why?

Eyes squeezed tightly at his words of admonishment. Io felt the tear as it traveled down her cheek but it hadn't really registered that she'd started crying until he'd asked her to stop. Lifting a hand, she wiped at the trail of moisture that lined her cheek and took a deep breath to try and calm her rapidly beating heart. She felt a small smile pull at her lips when he scolded her, and a quiet laugh slipped free in the guise of a hiccup. Her tears had always made Mooki uncomfortable, and not for the first time did Io wonder if that was because they were her tears, or if the tears of any female would have set him on edge. She liked to think that she might be unique enough to Mooki that the site of only her crying would upset him so, but she didn't deserve to feel that way anymore. Not after what she had put him thought.

She looked up at him through her lashes, really looked at him for the first time and knew that his insistence that things were alright, that he was alright, was a lie. She saw the way he fidgeted, how he looked around the tavern almost nervously, and guilt started to build inside of her, threatening to send a fresh wave of tears streaming down her cheeks.

Io's grip on the cup in front of her tightened, and she was sure had the tavern been empty, or at least quieter, she would have heard the porcelain cracking under her fingers when he spoke of not having died, making light of something that indeed hadn't happened. Something that she had prevented from occurring by leaving. She stamped down on the angry retort that bubbled up inside her throat, knowing that snapping at Mooki now would only make things worse between him. He hadn't really meant anything by it, and he was still hurting, still heart sore from having had his sister, and a woman he cared for up and leave with little to no explanation.  He had earned the right to feel that way, and she deserved to hear the bitterness in his tone. It was the least she deserved.

"No," she inhaled softly and allowed the warmth and joy of that fact wash over her, giving her the courage to press forward. "you did not die, for which I am happy." Gently, she lifted the cup to her lips and blew across the hot liquid, using the time to collect her thoughts before siping slowly. "At first, I accompanied Nyree to Dena Nehele, though once we arrived, we went out separate ways. She hasn't been too enthusiastic about traveling together in the first place, and I think it best to leave her to her own business while I dealt with mine." she placed the cup back down on the table before continuing. "It was safer for both of us that way. Though I did check in on her from time to time and always let her know where I was going to be."

Once she started talking, it was as if a floodgate had been opened inside of her, words flowed freely, a constant stream of fear determination and finally triumph. She told Mooki everything. Told him of the web that had prompted her departure,  of living with the hospitable Blood and harsh weather of Dena Nehele, of confronting her father and the men he'd brought with him to bring her home. She told him of being dragged back to Dharo, of the plots her family tried to use her gifts to execute, how they planned to pin multiple murders on her and her brother, who was the only other family member to oppose them. When she reached the point in her tale about the death of her family, her voice only caught once, and only when speaking of her brother's death. He was the only one she would mourn.

By the time she finished, her cup was still mostly full, the tea now cooled, and a number of people had left, leaving the tavern more empty than when she had begun her story. Her gaze, which had alternated from staring blankly at the wood grain of the table and her cup, lifted brown meeting blue. "You joked earlier about not having died, but if I hadn't left, you would have." she bit her bottom lip till she had nearly drawn blood, leaving it swollen and raw. "I saw it so clearly Mooki. They were coming for me, and I I knew there was very little I could do to stop them other than run. I...I know I took that choice from you, that you would have tried to protect me if I'd stayed, but I couldn't let you die, I just couldn't." she clenched her fists in her lap, not wanting to break the cup she'd been given accidentally. "Losing you like that would have killed something inside of me if not outright. But I am sorry that I hurt you, but I would rather that than have you dead and beyond all feeling." she sighed softly and waited. She'd done most of the speaking, now it was her turn to listen.
