    Jin-ae So

    The Basics

    Full Name: Jin-ae So
    Age: 108
    Gender/Pronouns: Female/she/hers

    Ethnicity: Dhemlanese
    Birthplace: Anahi, Dhemlan
    Current Location: Paon
Profession: prior student & nomad, now slave

    Caste: witch
    Birthright Jewel: Yellow (CUT 15)
    Offering Jewel: Summer-sky (CUT 32)

    Face Claim: Lee Ji-eun

    The Body

    Height: 5’4
    Body Type: Slender
    Hair Color: Black
    Eye Color: Dark Gold

    Appearance:
Short and narrow, Jin-ae is barely into adulthood and looks it. Hair kept long, braided for chores, family edict kept her away from the harsh sunlight, kept her fair and dark haired. The marks of work she bares are the muscles put on in training in hand to hand combat, archery and horse riding, and the callouses from learning mending crafts and drawing a bow. Typically in sturdy, warm clothing to combat the Northern chill, Jin-ae is still prey to the temptations of well done embroidery and shiny trinkets, although she owns very few items that don't have at least two uses.

    The Mind

    Craft Strengths: 10 of 15pts
    Spell Weaving
    Calming Spells
    Compulsions Spells
Craft Weaknesses: All shields, healing brews and webs, locks

    Personality:
At her core, Jin-ae is a kind, sharp girl. Coming from a family rigid in tradition, she’s one of the many Dhemlanese youth who believe that the future of the territory lies in taking strides forward, even if they are small. Having worked within the confines of her family’s iron grip to learn as many uses for Craft as she could, she understands better than most of her radical peers how significant a fraction of change can be.

There's a fire in Jin-ae that drives her desire to know, learn all that she can about Craft and it's applications in the world and experiment with her abilities. For all of Dhemlan's traditions and history, she knows there is more beyond their teachings, and she wants desperately to see the realm and experience its wonder. Unfortunately, her desires and the rigidity of her home life, along with the difference in jewels between her self and her family, have painted a bitter streak in her. Jin-ae's imagination is greater than her strength, and she hasn't yet realized the versatility of her jewels. Quick to attempt things her power won't yet allow, meaning that her ventures frequently blow up in her face. She's sensitive about her failures and easy to snap and grow embarrassed when given criticism, even if it's constructive.

It takes time for Jin-ae to warm up to people enough to take their advice into serious consideration, but she's a generally friendly and outgoing person. She doesn't like to be alone, and is used to noise and activity, likes to make play her families instruments when she has time. Experimenting with Craft is her first and primary passion, however, and she works at it as often as she can.

Personal Strengths: Archery, horse riding, hand to hand combat, being crafty with Craft,
Personal Weaknesses: Impulsive, stubborn, competitive, disliking unbending rules and authority, sensitive about her failures

    The Backstory

    Family:
    • Chihye So | Mother | Summer-sky to Green Priestess
    • Name | Father | Rose to Opal Caste
    • Name | Brother | Summer-sky to Summer-sky Caste
    • Name | Brother | Purple Dusk to Sapphire Caste
    • Name | Brother | Opal to Sapphire Caste

    History:
    Birth to Birthright
Last child and only girl of the So family, Jin-ae came into life already framed in expectations. Her mother a Green Preistess, and all of her brothers having reached greater Darkness, Chihye pinned her hope in Jin-ae that her daughter might carry the strength of their lineage forward as well. A perfect set of dark children. Partially nomadic while her brothers went to school, Jin-ae was at her mother's knee observing the workings of the house before she knew how to read.

Her standing in their family was drilled into her early: she, like her mother, was the last bastion of defense in their home, and thus had to be prepared to protect it. And for that she had to be strong.

Jin-ae's training began as soon as she was steady on her feet.

Reading, writing and arithmetic quickly turned to budgeting, agriculture, and horse rearing as she grew: the staples of her family occupied her every day. She even began practice with staffs in anticipation of the naginata, her daily routine stacked with physical activities when she wasn't at school.

The weight of her brother's shadows, of her mother's shadow, laid heavy across her. Taught ahead of her classmates as much as she was able, pushed by long hours under her mother's eye, Jin-ae flourished in her studies, eager and fascinated by the mechanics of Craft. It didn't occur to her yet what that rigor would mean in the future, a prediction of how Chihye's grip was unlikely to loosen. Jin-ae only really noticed as her mother's handling of her grew more and more strict before her first ceremony, micromanaging her every moment. It was the first time she felt stifled, and the first flickers of uncertainty grew within her.

When her Birthright came and went, failure cast its pal across her. A Yellow, lighter even than her middle brother who'd descended only to a darker Summer-sky. Even if she fell as far as possible, the darkest she would reach would only be the jewel her mother sprang from.

    Birthright to Fifty-five
It soured her mother's relationship with her, the Yellow, and in turn sparked the wick of Jin-ae's insecurities. Her mother took a step back in their training, her lack of emotional support a stark contrast to the adamant tutelage that continued.

Jin-ae spent every moment she could practicing her 'impractical Craft' ideas after that. She focused on Spell Weaving, on Calming Spells for the horses to hide her experimenting from her mother. The distance between them didn't change, but with every passing year she found herself longing more and more not only to know of the world beyond her books but to see it, to leave Dhemlan and travel.

Throwing herself into school, she found other youth who balked at the boxes of their assigned lives, who dreamt of Dhemlan bigger than the one they've been told to have. It was easy to nurture her ideas in their light, to feed teenage discontent with her family life. Where once the idolization of her mother and her teachings had roosted the fire of rebellion quickly ate. Although not particularly politically minded, it was easy for Jin-ae to see how her mother was a facet of the traditional ways of thinking, and was eager to pursue change that would let later children of Dhemlan grow free of the expectations she'd been pinned with.

She took her Offering earlier than any of her siblings, diving through her inner webs in a desperate plunge, stretching her mind as far below her as she could. When she rose with her Summer-sky the joy of her descent was marred by the impassivity of her mother. It was what was expected, after all, even if she surpassed two of her brothers in levels of Descent, she still wasn't as Dark as they were.

And that decided it, pieces fitting into place in her mind as easily as breathing.

She was going to leave Dhemlan. She was going to take the Territory Exams, and go.

    Fifty-five to Present
She knew the Exams weren't a necessity in other territories, knew she could leave and apprentice under someone, somewhere, and learn a trade. She'd even heard tell of Courts that took up women Stewards, that in some places there were Queens and men who ruled, although she had no idea how accurate those accounts were, if those practices persisted.

It didn't matter -- the fact that somewhere there was a break from the Dhemlanese mold, that there was a place so far removed and different that she couldn't even entirely imagine it.

The steps in pursuit of that dream kept her from just packing up and leaving. Long hours spent studying, practicing her little Crafts, standing under the awning of their archery range taking out her frustration on progressively more complex targets. Impulsive she may have been but the goal was more than passing the Exams. It was doing something none of her brothers had succeeded at, something her mother and father had not attempted, content with their horses and their farms.

In that, Jin-ae would be unique.

It took decades, hiding the study materials from her parents, acting like she wasn't carefully stashing away marks, weaving heating and cooling spells and preservation spells into her clothing and packs. She took every Exam Day as a small holiday from her chores, establishing her absence so that it wouldn't seem strange when she finally did sit the tests. There wasn't a way to know if any of her brothers caught on to the fact that she was leaving, and by the time she was taking the Exams she didn't care. She'd saved and pinched and worked for her right to be there, spent as much of her days as she could since her Offering trying to be as prepared as the students from the prep-schools.

On Exam Results Day Jin-ae spent her limited free savings to buy a copy of a certificate of passage, framed, her score printed bold and proud beside her name. She presented it to her mother that same day at dinner, before her brother and her fathers, plate clean.

The next morning she vanished her bags, bundled up in warm winter clothing, and left an hour and a half before the chores were to start, shrouded in shadow, walking toward the closest border without looking back.
