happy accidents

A moment to herself. Or an afternoon. Peg wasn't sure. Sometimes he stayed longer than he said, or less, the dragon-caller. This time she was taking him at his word. An afternoon free of her Birdy duties. Peg was taking it and running. Mumbling about town as she ducked out the door and darted of toward the city proper, only to change directions as soon as the house was out of site.

She hid her clothes in some bushes. And herself. Whispering her way through the change, it had been so long she was beginning to fear she'd forgotten the steps. Taught how after her birthright. The knowledge had been there naturally, but it helped to have it explained. Steps to follow. She repeated them now, words giving way to panting when her lips and tongue could not form them anymore.

It hurt! Mother Night it hurt like hell. But eventually it was over. The pain done with and just herself left. Not the Pug (the name made her crazy, but was sticking, even in her head) they knew at the house. This was Peigin the wolf. Golden in coloring, with pale legs and underbelly. The edges of her ears almost black, and strip of fur down her back nearly brown.

Scrabbling out from under the bushes, Peg shook herself, nose lifted to the air not to howl, howling attracted attention, but just to smell. Freedom. Wild. Good land. Her toes wiggled and tail wagged. Turning a circle, she looked back toward the house Kite had built for Birdy and Winnie. She felt twice the imposer there. Living in a room meant for a queen. Living with people that weren't her own. All of them but Kite would die before she was even done maturing.

It was sad and uncomfortable and she was afraid. The best thing for fear, Peg had learned, was running. Which she did now, faster than her girl legs could ever hope to carry her. Loping through Reric's wild places. Even here she could feel the imprint of the city's queen. Leaving her walls to tend what stretched beyond them. She started birds from bushes, and rabbits from their dens.

These she chased until her sides heaved and her tongue hung out of her mouth in happy exhaustion.

Gone to the hunt and to get away from the keep. Both queen and father driving him crazy today so he'd left, taken a bow and a quiver to find himself a nice fat deer or maybe two. Gunnar tracked along through the trees and underbrush, mind a whirl of things that he couldn't quiet. His mother was ailing, his father was flailing and his brothers were obnoxious. Nothing that was truly unremarkable there, though the business with his mother was worrisome. The healers saying nothing more than age was the culprit. They would manage, they always did, when she was gone from them.

He could feel the bond inside him strengthen and widen with each imprint of Solly he came across, the trees spoke of her and the ground whispered her name. He was becoming maudlin in his old age. Thinking of the impending death of his mother and the land that screamed his queen's name. Such a charmer he was. He would need to spend more time with his mother when his duties allowed for it. Being a steward was more difficult than he had imagined it would be.

A crack and senses heightened, alert to the presence of prey. Little bunny ears poking from a thicket he started to stalk, arrow quietly removed from the quiver and knocked in the bow he pulled tight. Timing was everything when a person stalked a rabbit. Patience was another and patience Gunnar had in abundance. Very nearly released the arrow when the rabbit's head shot up and the tiny animal stiffened before darting away as quick as its little legs could carry it. "Darkness fucking take it," he growled before another snap of the underbrush brought eyes back to the thicket.

What emerged was not a rabbit but a wolf unlike any he'd ever seen in Glacia with an attitude he'd not have expected from a beast. Tongue lolling with happy pants, Gunnar was struck by the golden coloring of her pelt. Kindred maybe and Gunnar sent out an exploratory probe sent along an opal thread. He could sense something around the wolf, not a strength but a sense of something more than just a regular wolf. "Hey, hey" he called, "Leave some for me yeah?" He still had a mind to hunt and it would be a fine nice time if this pretty little wolf didn't scare them all away.

Man. Too tired and stupid to have noticed hum before. Peg froze. The rabbit gone and nothing but man in its place. For a wild moment she imagined that one had turned to the other, but she could ear the rabbit fleeing if she cocked an ear to the left. Smell where the rabbit had been and where the man had come from. Like trails on a map, their paths were marked on the ground for her nose to follow.

She should have smelled him sooner. Tongue rolling back up into her mouth, Peg whined. He a bow, and arrows to go with it. And craft, probe trying to read her. Peg could sense it, not so much darker than her Purple Dusk, but enough. She retreated, drawing her power and caste inward. Dancing her body away from his words. Peg didn’t need a probe of her own to tell her he was danger. He was a man and he had seen her, that was danger enough without adding to her worries.

Sneezing, she pawed her face and fled after the rabbit. Racing down the game trail before veering sharply away and concealing herself with a sight shield. Sitting back against a tree, Peg panted, ears twitching as she listened for pursuit. A wolf pelt might be worth more than a couple of rabbits. Peg didn’t know, but she did wish she’d stayed home with Birdy. Or was there now so she could hide under the bed.

It was too risky to run home now. The hunter might follow her. Sight shields didn’t erase tracks. He could have been tracking her backwards at that very moment. Right to the thicket she had hidden her clothes in. Wouldn’t that be confusing? Fretting, Peg crept out if hiding and decided to make sure he was not. Carefully stalking the man while he stalked prey. Craft keeping her hidden from sight and easing her through bushes that would have otherwise rattled with her passing.

She was just making sure he didn’t find her clothes. Or follow her home to Birdy. Or worse, Peregrine. She didn’t want to see that one angry again.

Gunnar's instincts to chase were far too strong when the pretty light colored wolf darted away. Too long he'd left any type of chase, stalk and catch. Whether it was on four legs or two. The restrictions his father had laid upon him, no matter that the man's pack had thrown him away, to keep what they were safe and secret weighed heavily on him. It didn't matter who he was with and where he was, Gunnar did not give away his other half. His queen did not even know who and what Gunnar truly was. And it would remain so.

Tracking game and prey while searching for that wolf was an easy thing for the warlord prince. Tracks gave the animal away, followed and followed. Gunnar managed a brace of rabbits before he came to something rather peculiar. Wolf tracks coming from a thicket he passed some time ago. An unsuspecting eye could imagine the wolf was after another rabbit or maybe a quail, but these tracks were solitary, slinking and sneaky. They were not running and there were no other tracks around.

A moment's thought and Gunnar stopped before he did something foolish. Like sticking his head in the brush like an untried boy. Probes of opal, searching and searching and finding nothing but strange shadows. He knew the wolf was not in there, his probes had told him so, but something was. Crouching down, Gunnar set his brace of rabbits next to his foot and shoved the bushes blocking the empty space out of his way. Brow furrowed and confusion flittered across his face.

Clothing. A woman's clothing by the looks of it. Reaching in, Gunnar pulled the material free of the thicket. They didn't smell and they weren't moldering with age. Confusion continued to shadow his face. Why would some woman leave her clothing in the bushes of Reric's forests unattended? A small smile replaced the confusion and he could only take a guess that some girl had forgotten her clothes in the aftermath of a fling. Maybe gotten caught out. Had to run. Might want them back. Solly would know which one of her people they belonged to. That woman didn't let anything slip past her.

Stuffing the garments in his pack, Gunnar slung his catch over his shoulder head shifting and turning to look for the wolf. He knew the animal was out there somewhere. He could feel those eyes watching him but he didn't think the wolf would make an appearance just yet. So he'd wait. Maybe entice them to play. Gunnar never minded playing with the wolves around here and no would not be any different.

Pug lost track half way through the hunting of just who was following who. Warlord Prince kept carefully in her sights while she slunk through the underbrush. And if she could not watch him, Pug made sure she could smell him. But she kept finding herself back on her own trail, as if she were chasing her tail instead of the man.

He was tricky, Pug decided. And tricky was dangerous. She didn’t like tricky. He was dangerous enough without being a sneak or even clever. He had found the bush she’d hid her clothes in. Fur on end, Pug hunkered deep into another bush and watched him. Her shaking threatening to make the leaves rattle. He was digging in her bush! Rubbing her snout with her nose, Pug whined into the dirt. Stop that!

But he did not hear. Too bent on digging out her clothes. Pug dug her back legs under her belly, tail rising as she prepared to spring. He was stealing her clothes! Taking them from their hiding spot and sniffing them. Hackles rising as he brought them to his nose and then stuck them in his pack. Why was he stealing her clothes?

Any other time, Pug might have let him keep them. She had more clothes. But this day she had a house to get back into. One too full of people to enter as a wolf or a naked woman. Both ideas made her want to throw up the ginny hen she’d eaten earlier. She needed those clothes! Nails digging into the hard ground, Pug shot out of the bush. Quick as any terrified animal she shot right past the brace of rabbits that should have taken up her attention, and leapt for the bag.

Teeth snagging the canvas, Pug tried to avoid touching him. Nails scrabbling air and tail swinging dizzily. She went over his shoulder, nose wet and hot in his ear, tumbling into the bush he had stuck his nosy probes and head into. But she didn’t let go of the bag. She needed her clothes! Back breaking roots as she flipped onto the ground, whining and growling and trying to take her clothes back. She would need the whole pack, no thumbs to work it open in this shape.

Hers! Legs kicking, Pug thrashes herself over, setting her paws into the ground and yanking. Twigs and leaves breaking off into her fur. One jabbing her behind the ear.

His head had turned the wrong direction. Not that the direction had mattered much, Gunnar wouldn't have seen the pale wolf coming if he'd had eyes in the back of his head. She hit him like a ton of bricks and Gunnar's breath blasted out of him with a grunt. "What the fuck?" he yelled as she bypassed the brace of rabbits slung over his shoulder. She'd snagged the bag instead.

What in the name of Darkness was going on here? He could understand a wolf's instinct to steal fat rabbits but a bag full of clothes and the last bit of his hunting rations? It made no sense. Ass over tea kettle and a hot wet nose in his ear. He landed hard on his back, whatever breath he'd gotten back snatched away from him on impact. And she tugged, yanking him towards her with a lurch. Scrambled at the pack still attached to his shoulder and for a moment Gunnar was afraid she'd dislocate his arm to get the bag.

"Fuck!" he shouted trying to fling himself around to see her. Gunnar could throw spells without looking if he'd practice more but as it were, some he needed sight to do it. He relied far too heavily on his brute strength most of the time. But this time. This time that pretty pale wolf had taken him quite by surprise. He couldn't see her, before and after she'd slammed into him, but he could feel every lurch as she pulled that bag.

If he could just get loose of the bag, the rabbits slung away when he'd tumbled, all Gunnar would need was line of sight for a blast of power. He wouldn't hurt her, just slap her enough with his opal to get her to let go. Wrench his arm down and away, the bag finally came loose and Gunnar rolled with the motion to come back to his feet. Opal coated his hands in preparation for what he would need to do and he gave the ground a slap with his jewel of strength to get her attention.

"Now I don't know what the fuck this is about, wolf, but that's my pack and you need to give it bacl," he said smoothly if a little darkly, "I don't want this to get out of hand, ya hear?"

Startled by his yell, Peigin snarled, all her hair standing on end as she tried to rip the pack from his shoulder. It was hooked under his arm, however, and she just ended up dragging the warlord prince toward her. Which was terrifying. Not a terrifying as the thought of going home naked. Trying to slink into the house without anyone noticing. Not with the dragon caller there. He’d already begun grumbling about virgin nights.

Apparently she was a liability to Birdy without hers. It made Pug want to die just thinking about. Terrified she would shift skin and kill whoever tried to do the deed. Or worse, be murdered in the process, and expose her people’s secret.

They struggled. He was trying to get loose, and Pug was trying not to let go and run away. Twigs snapping around them, the noise loud in her ears. Peigin pinned them flat and gave the bag a hard shake to try and work it free. She needed her clothes! He did not understand how badly. Why had he taken them anyway? Males! Nosy, thieving males!

She nearly fell backward over herself when the pack came free. The tension suddenly gone. Pug snorted and jerked away from him. Rumbling warning as he rolled over, face to face with each other. And then not, as he stood. Too tall! The bush crackled as she ran, tossing up a shield that rocked hard as he hit the ground with his power. Opal bucking her Purple Dusk and making her stumble.

Peigin dropped the pack. Yipping, she turned and snatched at it again. Those were her clothes! She glared at him, slipping the strap back between her teeth with slow deliberation. Hers! Snorting at him and his threats, Pug fled. It was all she could do.

She ran from him. Not that he blamed her, he'd hit the ground rather hard with that burst of power and she'd snatched the bag before taking off. The idea that a wolf would want his bag was freaking him out. He looked towards the way the wolf had fled, confusion plain on his face and opal still coating his hands. He wouldn't chase her, he knew it was futile to try. She was frightened enough and Gunnar wasn't cruel.

He moved when he realized she wasn't coming back to finish whatever it was she started and reached for the brace of rabbits left on the ground. Eyes kept going back to where she had run. What was going on in the world that something like this would happen? It was an odd thing for a kindred to do and Gunnar began to think that perhaps she was bound to someone, someone who those clothes belonged to. He nodded definitively. That idea made more sense than the only other one he could think of. The other idea was preposterous.

There was no way that pipedream could be even remotely true. He would just have to come to grips with the fact that a kindred wolf got the best of him. He started to chuckle at the idea. A kindred getting the best of a An Corithe. His chuckle turned into an outright laugh as he slung the rabbits back over his shoulder. There was much he needed to discuss with Solly after this incident. She would need to know if the kindred were becoming so bold and he had a wolf to find.

Because he would find her again.
