He had left after a brief lie in. Neha Rajani was not sure either of them had actually slept. But she had rested, body refreshed after the vigor he had brought on it. Is hands warm and soothing as he had petted her to sleep, or almost sleep. Bodies drying against each other in an intimate tangle. A briefer kiss, still, in departure. Neha Rajani had been expecting him to take liberties. To press and fondle and force in his tongue.

Savitr did not. Bidding her farewell gently before riding off back to his court duties. Neha Rajani did not leave the room to see him off. Good byes spoken in the doorway, her naked body wrapped in her robe. She had been slow to slip from beneath the blankets, waiting until he was distracted by his own clothing to dare it. Once he was gone, Neha Rajani sank against the door, palms spread over the wood to hold it closed and keep the world out.

And then she straightened, distaff thread summoning Zohana to her. She would find comfort in her friend that she would not with any of the other staff.

”The bedding will need to be laundered before tonight.” She was half tempted to order it replaced, but Neha Rajani knew that would be wasteful. There would be more such encounters in the future. Shoulders tense, she sat at the low table that housed her things. Jewelry boxes, cosmetics. All replaceable. The important and expensive items were tucked away in her or Savitr’s cabinet.

Taking up a damp clothe, Neha Rajani wiped the kohl that had smudged beneath her eyes. She looked at Zo through the glass, not yet ready to face anyone directly. ”I am unhurt.” She admitted. ”But deeply shamed.”
the irony of such words were lost on Neha Rajani. She wiped her lips as well, with the other side of the clothe, washing away the lingering taste of the kiss she had too heartedly taken part in.

From the window of the private sitting room- meant for the family’s use only- Zohana watched the master of the house saddle his horse. She wondered that he had bothered at all to unburden it of tack. In the city they were often left in stables, chewing their bits while their owners conducted business. What did it say of him as a person? That he would take the time? Or had he hoped to stay the night and been denied? Zohana worried, silently, that her lady would push too far in her attempts to stand against Savitr’s…. Savitr-erness. There was no other way to describe the man. A force until himself.

Turning on her heel she walked on soft soled shoes to the room the man had just left. Inside her mistress waited. Sitting daintily at the vanity. Looking no worse for wear. The house had buzzed when they entered the sanctuary of their private bedroom. None confused on the why. As one of the servants Zohana heard things. Many things. And she had waited on edge for the deed to finish. Not soothed in the least by the longer serving houseworkers that their master had never broken anyone on his spear. They seemed to like him, speaking of him with the sort of reverence one expected when it came to a man as respected as he was feared. Of them all Zohana was the least afraid. Sure of her shields and potency. But she feared him too, because he had claimed her mistress. And could do a thousand wanton things to her while the house was unable to help.

He had already spanked her once. Letting the blame fall on Zohana afterward. So that all the house patted her softly and promised his preferences and tempers would grow easier to learn. This time Neha Rajani looked unscathed. The bedding too, rumbled and smelling of sex but cleaning semen was not difficult. ”Yes, mistress.” She began to strip it away. Bunding the sheets and pillowcases inside of the thin quilt which she used to wrap it all up neatly. Ready to carry when she left the room. As she worked she fluffed the naked pillows. Craft penetrating deep into the fibers to cleanse it of any scent. The mattress too. Worked free of unwanted smells while she felt it with a hand to make sure no wetness had gone through.

When she had finished she turned to the air in the room. Settling the ride of emotions staining the air until only the soft hint of flowers remained. Their dried petals gathered in a satchel that rested on a nightstand. Picked by Zohana’s hand to give a pleasing aura to the room without being as intrusive as perfume. Over her mistress’s shoulder she met the reflection of her golden eyes. Face somber as she listened. Coming over to set gentle hands on narrow shoulders. ”That greatly saddens me to hear. Do you wish to speak of it, my friend? Is there any comfort I can offer?”

What had he done to bring shame on Neha Rajani? Was it why he left?

It was like opening a window. Zohana brought the clean air with her when she came in. The room grew calmer, bedding stripped in that matter of fact way she had. A tidy bundle by the door. Neha Rajani wet the other side of the cloth and wiped the rest of her face clean. Hair clinging to her temples and forehead still.

The bed seemed less threatening now. Though the scent of Savitr lingered on her skin as well. Zo pulled it from the bedding, chased the psychic and physical scents from fabric and air alike. Neha Rajani straightened the line of her robe. If fell perfectly across her body, drawn tight and seamlessly closed. Naked as she was beneath it, the fabric pooling around her body made her feel anything but vulnerable. The hands on her shoulder helped immensely.

”No and no.” She sighed. Reaching up, Neha Rajani laid a hand over one of Zo’s. ”It’s foolish, mayhap.” Savitr did not understand her vows. She wondered if anyone did. It was not something she spoke of in great detail to just anyone. Neha Rajani gave up, dropping the ill used cloth on the table. ”A bath, I think, is in order.” She was the only thing left that smelled of her husband. Maybe after she was clean she would be able to put her thoughts in order.

Neha Rajani followed her maid into the bathroom. Friends so long there was little need for words between them. Zohana knew what Neha Rajani liked best, sometimes before Neha Rajani did herself. While the tub was filled, she unwound what was left of her braids, two thick loose ones to frame her face and pinned at the back. All of it mussed by Savitr’s thrusting. It made her blush to think of.

”He tried, I think, to honor my vows with me.” For her? Frowning, she shed her robe, hanging it from a decorative hook. Slender legs saw her over the tub edge, hand in Zo’s for balance before she sat in the water. It smelled of hibiscus and something she could not name. ”And yet.” She sighed, face pressed to her knees as she remembered the way his body had driven hers to climax. Young, handsome, and eager.

Through the mirror the women shared a look of silent commiseration. Both knowing the answers to Zohana’s questions, but they still had to be asked. It was the only thing that the maid could do to ease whatever suffering darkened her mistress’s heart. Fingers tensing she gave Neha Rajani a brief squeeze. ”Perhaps it is… but foolish or not you feel it. And so it is important to me.” They had always shared. From girlhood onward. Sweets, suffering, and secrets.

There were things now, however, that they could not say to one another. Subjects side stepped so that neither had to risk too much exposure. Zohana’s stomach twisted and gnawed with guilt. Green Offering humming on her finger with calming craft. This was all her fault. Or at least, a great heaping portion. If she had let her friend grieve her mistake in her own way then perhaps this burden would not exist. She could have taken her to any temple, too, but it seemed so wise. Such an assured redemption. Neha Rajani had the money, and the Lady Mitra a reputation in the servants circles of being easy to buy absolution from.

Worrying the inside of her lip she nodded with an outward serenity, ”Yes. I’ll run the water.” Turning her attention to that task she started the flow of warm tap water. Testing it on her wrist to make sure it was just right. A smidge cooler than she liked in her own. From her cabinet she called in a wide mouthed jar. Ground hibiscus petals and red clove filled it to the brim. Underlying hints of chamomile working through the mixture. The powder dissolved in the water, leaving behind a pleasant scent.

Nearby her mistress unpinned her rumpled braids and dropped her robe. Relief flooded Zohana’s chest as she looked but found no marks. Not a scratch or bruise. Just rosy cheeks and eyes lost in thought. ”Come, the water will help.” She promised, offering a hand to assist the lady into the water. Contemplating the choice of words and what they were intended to convey. ”As it should be.” The real crux of the problem came out then. Hinted strongly enough Zohana could only form one suspicion.

”There is nothing in the scripture that condemns pleasure, my friend. That you chose to rebuke such as penance does not less a husband's responsibility to his wife, to make sure the act is not unpleasant. Master Tamboli is a young man of very… liberal… Well. He is your husband, I need not concoct a nice way to say it may well be a blessing he did not outright test your vows with open intent.” She brought a washcloth and a plump square hand towel from the linen closet- the latter folded into a small pillow for the end of the tub. Then she sat at the opposite side so they could speak more easily.

There were no words to express Neha Rajani’s gratitude, so she did not try. All she could do was hope that Zohana knew without it needing to be said. Beneath her feet, the tiles grew warm from the steam. Hair unwound while Zo filled the tub, emptying yet another secret concoction into the water. Neha Rajani’s life was full of such small pleasures. Experiments in scent and application. Rarely was it an unpleasant experience.

”You always say that.” And she was always right, but Neha Rajani merely smiled rather than say that part out loud. She eased herself slowly into the water, skin prickling at the heat pleasantly. Rubbing her face on her knees, she slowly untucked herself. Heels running along the bottom of the tub until her knees vanished beneath the water. Neha Rajani cupped water over her breasts, smoothing her nipples flat and let Zo’s words settle over her.

”You’ve noticed it too?” She tucked one knee over the other, toes sliding between each other. Of course other people noticed. Savitr did not hide who was. The face he turned to the public was the same he turned on her in private. At least he was marginally more discreet with his temper. She still felt guilty that the blame had fallen to her friend for her own mishap, even if Zohana hadn’t actually had to face the punishment. That has been Neha Rajani’s shame to bear.

”I don’t know. He is very strange, don’t you think?” Neha Rajani used the warm bath water to wash the hair away from her face, rinsing the sweat free that held them there. Her head pillowed on the folded towel Zohana had arranged for her, she eyes the decorative molding on the ceiling. The money they could have saved if they’d gone with a nice fresco instead. Though the family had not always been so poor, she understood.

”He told me I could take a brew, after all the fuss about children.” She was pouting, but it couldn’t be helped. All the worrying and negotiating! Had it really been about nothing more than sex? A test? A trick? Had she failed her marriage even as she had failed her vows, or would she be forced to choose once above the other. Sighing, she sank deeper into the water, until it lapped around her lips.
