Tadeu Vecchia

The Basics

Full Name: Tadeu Vecchia
Age: 229
Gender/Pronouns: He/him

Ethnicity: Mixed (1/2 Shaladorian, 1/2 Dhemlanese)
Birthplace: Shalador
Current Location: Shalador
Profession: Freelance healer

Caste: Healer Prince
Birthright Jewel: Summer-sky (CUT 15)
Offering Jewel: Opal (CUT 71)

Face Claim: Godfrey Gao

The Body

Height: 6’4”
Body Type: Lean but fit
Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: Brown

Appearance:
Though he’s never set foot in Dhemlan, Tadeu clearly favors his long-lived father more than his Shaladorian mother.  There’s no losing him in a crowd.  He towers over most people and simply has a look about him that’s exotic and exciting, despite the fact that the man himself is anything but.  He’s always loathed the things about him that make him stand out, but there’s simply no overlooking them.  He has the gentle slant to his eyes signature of the Dhemlanese and a deep olive complexion.  His hair, pitch black and often smoothed back, could go either way in terms of his heritage.  His eyes, however, are not the long-lived gold but a dark black-brown, the mirror of his late mother’s.  Because he can grow facial and body hair, he often does.  It’s rare to find Tadeu wearing any color but black, and he dresses simply and comfortably.  Even in the heat of summer, his toned body will be covered completely—whether out of modesty or shame, no one can say for sure.

The Mind

Craft Strengths: 15pts
Craft Healing
Healing Brews
Diagnostic Sight
Craft Weaknesses: Always the healer and never the fighter, Tadeu struggles with physical applications of his craft, such as telekinesis, power blasts, combat craft, and even shields to a certain degree.

Personality:
Soft.  That’s what Tadeu has always been called, typically with a note of contempt from his more impassioned male relatives.  It’s true that he’s no Warlord Prince, prone to extreme outbursts and mercurial moods, but he isn’t a docile Warlord either.  As a natural Healer Prince, not trained, by nature Tadeu is very balanced and attentive.  He was never going to be a good enough escort looking the way he does, so the Healer half of his nature was fostered much more carefully during his time at the Healer’s Academy.  His skill comes not from his bedside manner, which some might say is severely lacking, but from his intelligence and ability to think clearly under pressure.  He’s methodical in both his work and life.

Tadeu is a slow-burning fire: he loves slowly, but deeply.  He worshipped his mother and grandmother and would have done anything for them, his Queen and the rest of his family.  But that was a generation ago.  As someone who’s half long-lived, Tadeu has watched anyone he ever cared for grow old and die.  It’s planted a seed of loneliness in him.  He’s lost touch with the new generation of the Vecchia family and lives almost entirely on his own out of his healing shop.  He’s lost so many people that he’s afraid to open himself up to making connections again, so he’s become a bit of a recluse.  Independent by nature, he only minds the solitude at night when the silence of the city is particularly heavy and his heart aches.

The Backstory

Family:
  • Unknown | Father | Summer-sky to Opal Warlord
  • Sanaa | Mother | White to Rose Healer (deceased)
  • Lourdes | Grandmother | White to Rose Healer (deceased)
  • Oria Nyoka | Wife | Rose to Opal Queen (deceased)

History:
tw: rape

For generations, the Vecchia clan of Shalador has been known for its weavers and traders.  It’s said (if by no one else except the family themselves) that the finest wool and cotton in all of Shalador comes from the Vecchia Farm in Talavera.  Tadeu’s mother, Sanaa, grew up on this very farm, knowing that as a Healer her role in life would be to take over one day and care for the animals.  But she longed for adventure and often begged her father to let her accompany him on one of his trips to Dhemlan, where he traded their textiles for metal.  He finally relented after her Offering Ceremony, though the doomed trip would prove to be the first and last time Sanaa ever left her home Territory.  She left bright-eyed and hopeful, yet returned bruised and defiled.

Her father didn’t return home at all.  He was killed trying and failing to protect her.  The Dhemlanese male who had attacked them was never found.  There wasn’t much to be done with the information Sanaa had, after all: the physic scent of a Warlord, and Summer-sky and Opal Jewels that he wore in generic pendants around his neck.  When she returned to Shalador, she was changed.  Her chalice had been cracked, though not fully broken, and she would never be able to live a full life.  Then she missed her moontime and realized that there was still a piece of the Warlord inside her.  Her mother suggested that she take a special brew to terminate the pregnancy, but Sanaa protested.  The child was innocent, she said.  She feared that she would never have another chance to have a child, damaged goods that she was, so she insisted on keeping the baby.

However, it was harder than she’d imagined to stare at a face that was almost identical to her attacker’s every day.  Tadeu was a well-behaved baby, full of smiles and laughs, but despite her best efforts, Sanaa could never love him.  His raising was mostly left to Lourdes, Sanaa’s mother and Tadeu’s grandmother.  She was a gruff woman, never one to mince words, but she made sure that Tadeu had everything he needed in life.  She was the one who first smelled the natural Healer on him and made sure that his Craft was trained and nurtured.  She arranged his Birthright Ceremony, where he walked away with a beautiful Summer-sky.  That proved to be the final straw for Sanaa, who couldn’t keep living with the similarities.  She killed herself soon after.

Tadeu felt like an outsider growing up, like a disease doomed to kill anything he cared about.  His grandmother was always there to remind him that he wasn’t, to make sure that he was included in family gatherings and get-togethers—by force sometimes if necessary.  She’s old in all of his memories, but also strong and full of love.  She died at 121, defiant of the rules up until the end.  Tadeu was 51 at the time, just a few years past his Offering Ceremony, and felt wholly unprepared for life on his own.  But his grandmother had done one more thing for him before her passing: she’d made arrangements for him to join a small district court after his training.  That was the court of Oria Nyoka, the daughter of a family friend.  She was 19 and Tadeu was 53 went they first met, and the connection was almost electric.  She was, in every sense, his first.

Though he began as her First Escort, she soon chose him as her Consort and they married.  She was so young, he thought, that it was safe to let himself not worry about losing her for a while, to lose himself in their romance instead.  But then it felt like he blinked and suddenly she was 40, small lines forming around her eyes where Tadeu had none.  She asked when they would have children but he could never give that to her.  He would outlive Oria, outlive their children, maybe even outlive their grandchildren.  It was too much.  He and Oria lived a long, happy life and she reigned until her death at 116.  Tadeu was 150 then and barely looked five years older than he had on the day they met.  People were not blind to his differences, and now he couldn’t pretend to be either.

Tadeu began to feel more and more ostracized and ran away for a decade to travel Terreille, just like his mother had always wanted to do.  He eventually returned to Shalador, of course, because it was the only home he knew or wanted.  But he didn’t return to any court or to his family, whose faces were all unfamiliar to him by then anyway.  Instead he settled in Almades, Shalador’s capital, and opened up a small apothecary where he offered his services as a Healer to everyone from the highest in society to the lowest.  In the 69 years since then, Tadeu has vowed to never serve another Queen or marry again.  If he isolates himself from society, he can’t lose anyone else or be hurt again.

If you’d told him even a month ago that he was going to want someone-- to want so badly to be close to another soul unlike his own-- Landry would’ve told you that you were crazy. He would’ve said “Not happening”, and left it alone, too beside himself to even consider caring for another person in the way he now cared for Amita. It had been sudden-- so sudden, yet the way she looked back at him when he talked was all the motivation he knew to keep pursuing the crazy. It didn’t matter that it was bad for him (for them) or that she didn’t think she could cope with letting him in, because in his own stubborn world he was able to handle it all for them. Wasn’t that enough? Couldn’t it just be enough that he loved her and wanted to give her the world?

But he wasn’t supposed to love her, and that was the thing. That was what she was saying without actually saying it. “I know, I know… I know you can’t, but I can.” A smirk formed just slightly in the Ravenclaw’s lips, his eyes searching hers again for that place he liked to call home. That warm, gentle place she would swear she never had. “I get that it’s hard for you and I don’t want to discourage you from expressing… Your pain, I think is the word here, but I want to do this. I want to do this because I don’t like what I’m seeing when I’m not seeing you. You’re the reason I smile-- and yeah, I’m crazy. I know it. But I need more.”

Pulling back just slightly, he rested his forehead gently against Amita’s shoulder, pretending for a moment that he wasn’t pleading with her to stay in their madness. “If you really don’t want to let me into your world and let me make you a part of mine, I won’t make you, Amita. But I want this. I want to keep having these moments where you piss me off and get me in my feelings, baby girl, because I love the way it feels to be beside you. It won’t be perfect and I know we’re gonna fight-- because we did that in the beginning-- but if that’s the kinda shit we gotta go through then I want it. Let me have that-- let me have you and I promise I’ll be the man you don’t need but want.” Pulling his gaze back up towards hers, he smirked again, fingertips massaging the base of her neck.

“Don’t answer today, if you don’t want to,” he explained, “but just stand her with me a little longer. Feel this moment, y’know? Because it’s the one thing I can’t explain to you that I need to make you feel. Or that I want you to feel… I want you to feel what it’s like for me to look at you and not have to let go. I want you to feel the kind of safe that I do, when I see your angry little waddle coming at me, girl. I want that insanity.
