Written by: Salem

Average Height:
  • Human forms: 5’5 ft to 5’8 ft / 167cm to 176cm
  • Seal forms: 7.9 ft to 11.5 ft / 2.4m to 3.5m
Average Weight:
  • Human forms: 160 lb to 220 lb / 72 kg to 100 kg
  • Seal forms: 440 lb to 1,320 lb / 200 kg to 600 kg

Origin:
Sceval in Kaeleer, though during the time of Witch many of the Moidyn Varrey scattered throughout Kaeleer and Terreille both to hide and to protect themselves from her and her court. Even with their now sprawling diaspora, the Moidyn Varrey keep to the waterways, settled along the coast and around lakes and rivers.

Appearance:
The Moidyn Varrey appear as the human blood do on land. Skin tones ranging in the full spectrum of shades from the palest white to the darkest brown with eye and hair colors just as diverse. Shorter on average than the human blood, Moidyn Varrey also tend to be stockier, solidly built with more muscle than fat to them. The real difference between the Moidyn Varrey and the human blood comes in their ability to take a second form.

The Moidyn Varrey’s second form is that of a large seal, leopard seals being common though the exact coloration and sizes vary from family group to family group. Compared to kindred seals, the Moidyn Varrey tend to be larger.

Sealskin pelts are their prizes, displayed prominently on their persons or in their homes by the bold or hidden away by the fearful. The prominence of these pelts has lead to rumors that they need them for their transformations but that is far from the truth.

Craft allows them to change between forms, a fluid transition that takes years to master in the water. Young Moidyn Varrey can take hours to begin their first shift while older Moidyn Varrey can complete the shift in minutes. All shifts require sufficiently deep water for them to submerge completely and all clothing is often either vanished or discarded on the shore.

Behavior:

-- Social Structure:

The Moidyn Varrey tend to cluster together, staying close to each other while living in plain sight of the other Blood. Congregating into Rookeries, Moidyn Varrey family groups are large and sprawling often encompassing entire sea side districts. The bloodlines of each family is tracked by the priestess and healers of the group and often people are sent between districts for virgin nights and to strengthen bloodlines.

Every Rookery is lead by a Priestess Queen or Priest Prince and their council, be it the first circle of their court or like-minded individuals that they’ve drawn into their service. These priestly leaders gain their position through bloodshed, succession rarely peaceful with coups often and expected. Strength is hardly the deciding factor in any of these coups, the Moidyn Varrey valuing cunning in their leaders above all.

Monogamy among the Moidyn Varrey is rare but not unheard of though they are more prone to polygamy for all genders should they wish it. Those Moidyn Varrey that eschew marriage completely often take multiple lovers, leaving the parentage of any resulting children to be unraveled by the priestesses and healers at their birthright.

-- Ceremonies:

Birthrights & Offerings:-

The Moidyn Varrey dive for their jewels always on nights of the new moon. Down to the deepest parts of the ocean and lakes near their homes. In colder climates especially birthrights are done in the winter, with the children sent out onto the ice to find their jewels in frozen waters. In warmer climates where even the winter doesn’t bring ice, the children are set out to the rough waters at the base of cliffs to seek their jewels. In both instances the only assistance comes from their parents and should no parent or guardian be present then a priestess elects to become a stand in.

Offerings are lone affairs of deep dives and hunts, an officiating priestess only present to recover a body should the poor soul fail, or to welcome the newly blooded Moidyn Varrey into the fold. In all instances, jeweless Moidyn Varrey are rarely expected to survive and are often either cast out completely or live on the fringes of their communities because without jewels they lack the craft to make the change necessary to participate fully in their families.

Virgin Nights:-

Virgin Nights are nearly always coincide with nights of the full moon. Very rarely are these affairs of only a single witch, the Rookeries preferring to gather all those eligible together in seclusion for ease. Gifts are presented to the each of the young witches and from among them they select a group of suitors, watching as they spend the night fighting for the right to assist. The squabbles have been known to last from sunset til dawn with the actual act only completed at dawn. Ample amounts of brews are passed between the witches and their suitors, a healer and priestess always on hand to settle any disputes.

Suggestions from the Rookery’s leaders are always taken into consideration but in the end the decision is left to the young woman.

Names and Naming Traditions:
The Moidyn Varrey follow the naming traditions of the territory they’ve chosen to inhabit. This allows them to assimilate far easier into their surroundings and avoid detection.
