Lutrani
Inspired by: Otters
Written by: Kirei

Average Lifespan: 45 years; Birthright Ceremony traditionally takes place at 2 years, and Offering at 10 years

Average Height:
  • Male: 6" to 12" (15 to 30 cm) at the shoulder
  • Female: 5" to 11" (12 to 27 cm) at the shoulder

Average Weight:
  • Male: 20 - 32 lbs (9 to 15 kg)
  • Female: 15 - 25 lbs (7 to 11 kg)

Origin:
Lutrani are known to exist in both Realms and almost all Territories, although they congregate around Dark Gates and prefer temperate climates with water nearby. In areas where they are preyed upon for their fur or meat, such as Askavi and Arceria, tribal populations are sparse. Still, there are few places the Lutrani won’t go—the messengers of a tribe are especially daring, and are the most likely to be seen far from home.

According to tradition, the ancestral homeland of the Lutrani spans Little Terreille’s Lohr Lake and extends across the westernmost forests and into the land of Dea al Mon. This area has the highest concentration of Lutrani tribes, and the tribe at Lohr Lake is considered the governing tribe for the entire Lutrani population.

Appearance:
The coat of the average Lutrani is tan, brown, or reddish-brown, with cream-colored patches along the cheeks, face, and belly. Their fur is incredibly dense, and provides insulation from moisture and extreme temperatures. Being that they are both powerful swimmers and adept runners, the majority of Lutrani are muscular and lean; however, as more and more tribes settle near human courts, spotting a chubby, cake-fed Lutrani has become less rare.

Most Lutrani take naturally to water, and their bodies are well-suited to it: their tails act as rudders, enabling them to swim precisely and change directions quickly at high speeds, and their small, scoop-shaped ears can be closed to keep out water. Their vision is also more accurate underwater, and their whiskers are excellent for detecting movement, leaving very few blind spots.

Lutrani have complex fingers and toes, and can grasp things with their paws in a way that many animals cannot. Most importantly, this enables them to manipulate lots of everyday human objects, such as levers, doorknobs, writing utensils, and cutlery.

Behavior:
Notorious for their shrewdness and lighthearted trickery, the Lutrani have long been one of the most well-known Kindred races among humans. Apart from their predilection for greediness, they are generally good-natured, and it is rare to hear of any Lutrani committing an act of premeditated violence. They are runners, not fighters; however, their passivity has more to do with logistics than with morals. As a species, they are cunning and self-aware, and usually only agree to do those things which they are good at.

All Lutrani belong to a tribe, and every tribe is built around a court, although not all members of the tribe live on tribal land or participate in court service. Each court is led by a Queen or a High Priestess, and her Triangle consists of a Steward, an Escort, and a Master of Security. The Lutrani do not have Consorts or armies as humans do; they mate freely without regard for monogamy, and only act in defense. The Steward is responsible for overseeing trade agreements, and is often the only member of the tribe who can read Common. The Master of Security organizes diplomatic meetings and supervises the construction of elaborate defensive traps, which are used to secure the tribe’s territory as well as any nearby Dark Gates. While the Escort’s duties seem minimal on the surface, he or she serves as the most powerful messenger in the tribe. All court messengers report to the Escort after a mission, and the Escort is the only one who has the authority to command the messengers if the Queen is indisposed.

The most important duty of every Lutrani court is to protect the nearest Dark Gate. Threatening the Dark Gate, whether by cutting off access to the Gate or by harming the Gate itself, is the only crime that the Lutrani punish tribal outsiders for, and also the sole crime for which their punishment is bodily harm or death. (All other severe crimes are punished by excommunication from the tribe.)

Becoming a messenger is considered the most reliable form of employment for a Lutrani, both inside and outside of court. There is a test of skill held once per year, usually in summer, which any Lutrani can attempt. The top scorers are accepted into the court as official messengers at the ruler’s discretion. Those with lackluster scores are free to try again the following year, although many young Lutrani choose instead to become freelance couriers for humans; the standards are lower, the money is better, and even the slowest Lutrani messenger is faster than the average person. It is not unheard of for one of these freelance couriers to be hired by a cash-strapped human court, since they are willing to be paid in spoons.

Other worthwhile positions in a Lutrani tribe include trap-laying, trading, fishing, and den upkeep. All dens and traps are constructed from (and decorated with) natural materials and objects that the tribe acquires through trade. Baskets and plush fabrics are hot commodities, as they make the coziest beds, but things like rope and mechanical parts are also popular for their use in traps. The most prized objects, however, are purely decorative; any small, shiny thing is considered valuable, but cutlery (but especially spoons, because they are pleasantly round) and metal jewelry are universally treasured among all tribes. Some Lutrani traders are also sneak-thieves, although this is frowned upon and, if discovered, will warrant a stern talking-to.

Names and Naming Traditions:
The Lutrani prefer nature-based names, all of which are gender-neutral and can be applied to any member of the species. The suffix changes based on the gender of the individual: “o” for male names, “a” for female names, and “i” for the gender-neutral or plural.

EXAMPLE: SALIK (meaning willow) could become Saliko (male), Salika (female), or Saliki (plural or gender-neutral).

Lutrani Glossary:
alti
singular feminine: alta; singular masculine: alto
The Lutrani word for all humanoid species. Translates literally to "the tall ones." Often combined with descriptors, i.e. fat alto, scary alta, bonk alti.

bonk
Stupid; silly; lacking forethought. Usually an adjective, but can also be used as a noun with a suffix attached, i.e. "You big bonko!"

tail-muncher
noun
Used to refer to someone who is getting on your nerves. Can also be used in phrase form, i.e. "You are really munching my tail!"

Grandakuri
proper noun
The exam that a Lutrani must take to become a court messenger. It consists of a challenging obstacle course (constructed by the tribe's trap-layers) and a very involved drill exercise, wherein the Queen gives one Lutrani a message to pass on to all other exam participants. The last participant passes the message back to the Queen, and if the message is inaccurate, the entire group fails. Translates literally to "Big Run."
It's like a bungee jumping gift certificate, but more magical! Use this to guarantee one character a mid or full Descent into the Abyss. (NOTE: Only usable on a Birthright Jewel that is Green or lighter.)   A fancy certificate awarded to those noble writers who finish what they start. Redeem it to get a bonus of 10% more marks for a completed thread.   How nice! This item allows you to re-roll the Jewels on one character sheet for free.   A fancy certificate awarded to those noble writers who finish what they start. Redeem it to get a bonus of 20% more marks for a completed thread.   A beautifully prismatic Jewel indeed. It possesses a strange duality, neither completely Light nor Dark; the only way to discover its true potential is to use it!   Wow, it's really heavy!
