Written by: dergon

Average Lifespan: 500 years (Medium Lived)
Average Height:
  • Male: 4 to 5 feet at the shoulder
  • Female: 5 to 6 feet at the shoulder
Average Weight:
  • Male: 600 to 900 pounds
  • Female: 800 to 1,000 pounds

Origin: Glacia

Appearance:
Most Angnuk look like isbyr in their second skin. Some that have been born far from the original homeland have adapted to fit within their ecosystems. Thick brown fur and smaller bodies. The females are the larger of the sexes. As Blood, only their birthmark sets them apart from the bodies they were born to.

Behavior:
Cursed creatures. Only among their own kind is a dual-souled child a boon, but they are so rarely born to their own that there is hardly ever a celebration. Originating among the Nukti tribes, it was thought that the child was visited by the sins of the father in the womb. Respect is due to all life, even the life the hunter takes. A lack of honor and respect to the spirits could result in a cursed child, born with an excess of soul, both human and animal.

Some blamed the mothers. Women terrified of loss, stitching the strong soul of a beast to their womb-child. How it happened changed from child to child. Blame assigned to parent by circumstance. Punishment shared by parent and child alike. But it is harder to punish an isbyr. Fiercer than any kindred, more cunning than any simple beast. The angnuk are primordial.

No different from your average Blood, they take traits from their parents. Blue eyes from their mother. Brown hair from their father. And from somewhere deep in their genetic background, the bear. A second form discovered upon a boy’s Birthright, or a girl’s Virgin Night. The bear is fearsome and all consuming. Friends and family easily forgotten. Morals a thing of two legs and not four.

It is their curse. No longer brothers and sisters, but just bears. The cunning without the heart. Young women not properly seen through their Virgin Night and first subsequent shift by another Angnuk often run feral. Their bed partner is almost always their first victim, and any who get in their way after.

It is gentler on the boys. Perhaps because of their youth, they are more able to adapt. Smaller and more rambunctious, they have had less time to settle into their human bodies and lives. Heads still full of children’s dreams.

Set apart not only by an excess of soul, Angnuk are able to easily recognize each other. A subtle difference in the psychic scent. Distinct only to others of their kind. Rumor speaks of birthmarks. Many children born with them are left to the ice flows for fear of what they might become. Beastmen. Murderers. The placement is never the same from body to body, but the shape is similar. Five marks. Circles. Slashes. Crescents. Five in a row to signify the claws they will grow.

Their populace is not great. Most Angnuk are sterile or infertile, so any child born of the dual-soul is precious. Their Black Widows weave webs searching for them. Priestesses listen in the Darkness. And the males hunt, ears and noses open to any hint that another of them has been born. Near or far relatives often stalk children when they are found, waiting until it is time to reveal their secrets. This pattern of behavior has only lead further belief that the bear is a curse. Brought by strangers on otherwise innocent children. Easier this than for the parent to accept the blame.

Names and Naming Traditions:
With no way of knowing a child will be born with a dual soul, most Angnuk names follow the traditions of the territory they are born in. Some later adopt a second name to honor the person who came to train them in the secrecy of the shift.
It's vibrant and cheerful, like the sky on a warm, cloudless summer day!   In addition to returns, the Darkness also happily accepts bribes. Guarantees a mid or full Descent. (NOTE: Only usable on a Birthright Jewel that is Green or lighter.)   The Darkness has a surprisingly lenient return policy! (No Birthright to Red - Darker Jewels not guaranteed.)   Pick your own! Allows you to choose a set of Light Jewels that you specify, up to a descent of Light Opal.   When cut just doesn't cut it! (Blood Opal to Ebon-gray)   Allows you to save one set of rolled Jewels for later use.
