The euphoria of his orgasm had begun to fade, leaving him oddly melancholy in the wake of it. He was alone in the room, nursing his drink — which really had been too good to pass up a second glass of. He knew he needed to get up and leave, but the motivation to do that was minimal to nonexistent. He sort of wanted to annoy Ares like he’d annoyed Tobias — not that he really thought it would actually have an impact.

That was part of what was pissing him off. All of this had happened, and Ares had breezed through it like it was nothing while Tobias was left here doubting himself and what he’d let happen. He’d been so close to asking to be fucked, too close for comfort, and he’d found himself wordless more than once. It wasn’t like him, not when he was used to jovially fucking his way through the night. So what had happened?

He was startled out of his thoughts by the sound of the door opening, and he was prepared to make some sort of retort by the inevitable sound of Ares’s voice. But it wasn’t Ares walking in. It was Irja, and he eyed her, trying to figure out what she thought about this whole thing. She hadn’t wanted them to go near each other at all, let alone spend time one-on-one, and while he’d wondered why a few times, he was pretty sure he could understand now.

”Finishing my drink,” Tobias said, lifting the glass — like that was really what the problem was, and not the wobbly legs he didn’t want to walk down the stairs on. Fuck, what was wrong with him? ”Go for it,” he said, even though he was well aware that the question wasn’t really a request. He regretted how he’d spoken instantly. It wasn’t like him to be so simple with Irja. He’d usually flatter and joke, but for the moment… he felt too odd.

Maybe she’d worried about the wrong man in all of this. She hadn’t thought anything could put a dent in the ego of Tobias Marasfield. He was practically invincible if he was to be believed, and she had believed it, but now… he seemed off.

He hadn’t commented on her presence or appearance yet and a compliment about either her fine establishment, or her hard work hadn’t been the first thing out of his mouth. She was tempted to let it go, to ask Ares first what had happened, but if something had happened that was notable in the warlord prince’ eyes, he would’ve let her know instead of just ask her for clean up.

Tobias might not be a regular client -- he paid the workers, sure, but she made no money off of him, while he was practically a boarder who paid no rent -- but he was still a client. She couldn’t have him being displeased, not with the Red Star’s reputation being as good as it was.

“Are you okay, honey?” She asked with a note of concern in her voice. The way he was sitting on the bed, nursing his drink, looking forlorn in a state of undress… it painted a pretty tragic picture. Even if he did look like he’d had a good time -- physically. She had been around Ares long enough to know the tell-tale signs of a good session. The oils, the clothes on the bed, the faint red still on Tobias’ cheekbones from the whole thing.

She’d known it was a bad idea to have the two of them in the same room for too long without supervision. She just hadn’t imagined it’d be Tobias who was left licking his wounds.

Tobias took another long drink from his glass, frowning when he realized it was almost finished. Maybe he needed to check out some of Charis’s products at home alone, where he wouldn’t be a threat to anyone if he got drugged off his ass. He didn’t want to think about this — about his reaction to all of this in particular — and he was pretty desperate to forget.

”Sure,” he said, waving off her concerns. He was still aware of how strange he sounded, and he didn’t like it at all. ”Nothing to worry about, beautiful.” He mustered up a grin, one that even looked sincere from years of practice, but it didn’t reach his eyes. He drained his glass and set it on the table — maybe a little harder than necessary, but he couldn’t bring himself to care right then.

He should’ve been in a great mood after an orgasm like that, but instead… instead he was like this. He had to shake it off and get back to normal, or he was going to cause problems for himself. He didn’t have time to be doubting much of anything these days. He had plenty of work, both for his family and outside of it, and he couldn’t risk being thrown off his game like this.

No more Ares for him, even if it had felt good, even if he wanted to know what it was like to be fucked by him.

Her eyes narrowed at him when he answered. Sure, and nothing to worry about. Those weren’t exactly the confidence filled responses. Irja smiled at the hollow complement and the grin that was even emptier than the complement. As if he could fool her that easily. She’d been in this business long enough to see when someone was dropping in distress.

She reached up, pressing her hand against his forehead, like a mother checking for a fever, but the smile on her lips never faltered. Rather encouraging him to do the same before she brushed his hair back and looked at him.
“He can be a lot.” She said, knowing full well this had something to do with Ares. “Warlord princes.” She added, as if that explained everything, and her smile turned a little wry. “They’ll wring you out, shake you up and expect you to say thank you.”

The urge to tell him she’d told him so was very strong, but not like this. She’d save it for a better time -- a better mood, rather.

“And Ares likes his mind games in particular.” She added, petting him on the leg casually. “What you’re feeling is normal.” She just hadn’t thought Tobias was capable of such complex feelings. He was a playboy, he liked to have his fun, and then be on his merry way. Clearly Ares was like a trip wire -- and if he’d used his compulsion craft on the poor man, Tobias might feel even more out of it on top of what was likely his first brush with sub drop -- Daknress knew that was never easy on the alpha males like.

“There’s coffee downstairs in the kitchen. You know the way. I’ll be down in a minute to get some food in you, that’ll at least put some strength back in your body.” Irja offered -- or rather, she ordered. She was a true expert on the type of wrung out that Tobias was dealing with.

Tobias could see she wasn’t buying what he was selling, and he sighed. He needed to gather himself again, to figure out just what had happened and switch himself back on. He felt like he was there, just beneath the surface and trying to break free, but he just… couldn’t, no matter how hard he might try.

He scowled at her when her hand touched his forehead, but he didn’t pull away. Her hand felt cool against his fever-hot skin, and it was all he could do not to reach up and hold it in place until her skin warmed up too. But he refrained, letting her brush his hair back like he was a child.

His scowl deepened at her words. He didn’t want to admit that this was about Ares, but how could he lie to her when she already knew it was? She was about right though — Ares had wrung him out, shaken him up, then expected him to be grateful for it. Maybe he should’ve been. Maybe it shouldn’t have affected him so strongly. But it had, and he was annoyed.

Mind games. That sounded about right. He’d been flying so high, then suddenly… It had felt like he had crash landed into a pit. He didn’t want to admit she’d been right, but fuck. He’d been so sure she hadn’t been, when he’d been in the throes of pleasure, but now? Now, he was positive she had been right. ”Normal,” he repeated with a little bit of a sneer. Right. This was normal? Then why did people return to Ares? He certainly wouldn’t, not after this.

He accepted her dismissal, standing on legs that finally felt strong enough to hold him upright. He grabbed for the rest of his clothes, and at least he wasn’t modest or it might’ve bothered him to finish dressing in front of Irja. He wanted to grouch that he didn’t want coffee, but he always wanted coffee, and he wasn’t ready to go home just yet. Not alone, at least, but the idea of trying to pick someone up when he was in a mood like this was absurd.

”There better be danishes, too,” he grumbled, shoving on his boots and heading for the door to head downstairs.

She watched him as he walked out, looking vaguely like a young colt, or a fawn on legs that seemed wobbly and ill suited to the task of walking, but she said nothing. Instead as soon as he left the room, she took to her task. Cleansing it of psychic scents, as well as normal scents, changing the sheets and cracking a window for some fresh air.

It didn’t take her long, but Ares already returned, fully dressed and cleaned up before she could leave the room. She practically bumped into him as she turned to head out and she took a step back.
“Hmm, great,” he said. “Thank you darling.” He added, and he sounded genial enough. Irja still cast him a weary look.
“Did you have to go hard on him?” She asked. “You know I need him.” She added, and Ares scoffed.
“Did he complain?” Ares asked.
“Not in so many words, but he’s dropped hard, and he’s off kilter.”  She said with a sigh.
“He’ll be fine.” Ares said with a shrug. “He asked for it…” He added, a little sing-song but Irja cast him an unamused look. Ares stopped smirking and smiling then, holding up his hands in mock surrender.
“Hey, I wouldn’t have accepted his marks if he hadn’t been so adamant.” Ares said. “I didn’t think he’d actually go through with it, but he did. And he got what he wanted, and then some. Whatever’s eating him is his problem.” He defended himself.

Irja huffed a sigh and made a face at him.

“Next time just… don’t.” She muttered. “And be careful with those compulsions, I don’t need shit.” She added warningly, holding up a finger to him.
“I was perfectly discrete.” Ares said with a shrug. Clearly he wasn’t going to lay off the compulsions. He was too stubborn.

She left him behind on that note, closing the door to his room as she exited and headed on down -- she was interrupted for a moment by one of the girls needing towels, something about a lot of moisture, but Irja didn’t really care. She merely produced the towels and then quickly steered through the den, avoiding patrons with practiced finesse, and wandering into the kitchen, where Tobias was sitting at the table nursing a cup of coffee.

“All you need now is a kicked puppy…” She said with a slight smirk at him. “And it’d make a pretty painting.” She let her hand graze along his shoulder as she wandered further into the kitchen grabbing the coffee press and topping up his cup without asking.

“Did you have dinner before you came here looking for trouble…?” She asked him, her voice dry but neutral, more or less assuming him and Lucas just showed up for a liquid dinner some nights, and Ares was definitely not someone to take on an empty stomach. She opened the cold box and began rummaging around, taking out ingredients as she did. Eggs, leftover roast chicken, soft cheese, tomatoes….

He was disappointed and a little pissed off to find that there weren’t any danishes. He was craving something with lots of sugar to go along with his coffee — but at least there was that, and he grabbed the press to fill up a cup without bothering with cream or sugar. He set it back down then went to the table, gulping at it. It was cold, but he warmed it up with a touch of craft after he sat down.

He still felt dazed, like he’d just gone through something there weren’t words to describe, and he didn’t know what the fuck to do with himself. He knew he needed to get the hell out before Irja got downstairs, or he’d probably regret it.

He didn’t need to hear her say she’d told him so.

He almost snarled at her to fuck off, but this wasn’t some random person who’d irritated him. This was Irja, and she was different, and besides… if he snapped at her, she’d be even more sure she was right. ”I don’t want to hear you say you told me so,” he said instead, shooting her a look. He wasn’t in the mood for any of that shit.

”No,” he said curtly, trying to pull himself together. ”I can eat when I get home.” Without her looking at him, or touching him — which he normally would’ve liked, since it was so casual — or judging him.

She couldn’t help but grin a little at his response. Even if it took some of the fun out of telling him she’d told him so. As far as she could tell from Ares, nothing out of the ordinary had happened, and Tobias had been serviced like any other paying customer, which made Tobias’ mood a little harder to gage.

“I wasn’t going to.” Not today anyway. “I’m also guessing you don’t want to talk about it.” She added with a shrug. “Which is also fine by me, though I’m here if you change your mind.” It was as good an offer as she was going to give him, and he’d have to decide for himself whether he would take her up on it. Since clearly he liked deciding things for himself and disregarding what other people said or warned.
“You’re hardly the first person to come away from their time with Ares with some confusing feelings.” She added, her voice more quiet, as she continued to unload food from the cold box.

He might not know it yet, but she was going to feed him, and feed him all the things that would normally make a good hang-over or break-up cure. Something about the salt and the fat and the carbs that would help an addled brain. If she wasn’t so convinced of Ares’ skill, she would question his compulsions a lot more.

“You’ll eat here.” She said matter-of-fact. “I’m not letting you walk out like that, and that bourbon you were drinking isn’t something to pour on an empty stomach, you know.” She added, calling in her favorite skillet ad beginning to assemble him a plate of hot and cold foods that all fell squarely in the hearty comfort food section of her significant cooking prowess.

”You were so,” Tobias said a little grouchily. He sighed, though. Part of him did want to talk about it, even though he didn’t fucking know why. It just didn’t make any sense to him. Why had it affected him the way it had? He felt… dizzy. Off balance.

He frowned at her when she mentioned people coming away from Ares with confusing feelings. ”Yeah? Like what?” He didn’t want to admit what he was going through, but maybe if she mentioned some of the things, it wouldn’t hurt for him to know about them. He’d gone along with all of it, and he’d wanted to. He wasn’t sure why he’d wanted to anymore, but admitting that would’ve been admitting that maybe he’d wanted to annoy Irja just a little.

That… had not been what had happened.

He scowled. ”I don’t need a babysitter, Irja,” he said testily. But he did like her cooking, so he didn’t grumble much beyond that.

She hid the smile by turning her back to him once more. He wasn’t wrong. She’d wanted to say it, and the fact that he knew was better than getting to say it. She didn’t argue though, she let it rest, eventually there would come a time where she could remind him of this, and it would be almost as glorious.

Irja drew in a deep breath and held it for a long moment as she paused what she was doing. It was hard to explain it, but Ares had a way of making people feel very conflicted. Without giving away too much of the man’s trade secrets, she still wanted to put Tobias’ mind at ease.
“Aside from the question of their sexual orientation?” She started off thoughtfully. “There’s the ones with a level of identity crisis, the ones who become so infatuated that we need you to set them straight, the people who think they’ll never be able to get laid like that again…” She listed off while cracking the eggs in a bowl while the skillet fried the bacon crispy, and heated the chicken through.

“Ares is good at his job,” She concluded with a shrug. “A little too good, perhaps, considering the kinds of emotions he stirs.” She added some chicken and bacon to the pan, and the kitchen quickly began to produce delicious smells.
“Which he then leaves with the client and me to deal with…” Irja added, glancing at Tobias.

He didn’t need a babysitter, he needed a mother. Someone to pet him and tell him it would all be alright. She didn’t say that, just pursed her lips and continued to cook.
“You’re not going to let me be nice then…?” She asked, putting a heating spell on the skillet, allowing it to cook the frittata she was making evenly on both sides. "I thought you lived for that stuff."

Well, at least he didn’t have to worry about questioning his sexual orientation. He didn’t much care as long as he got off — though there was the fact that he’d been willing, eager even, to let Ares fuck him. That was confusing enough as it was. As he sat with his coffee, his mind started to clear, and he realized that was part of what was bothering him. He’d let Ares take the lead, but he still should’ve maintained some iota of control.

He hadn’t.

”I’ll never be able to get a massage like that again,” Tobias said dryly. ”But it’s not worth the side effects, thanks.” As much as he wanted to seek out Ares again, he wasn’t going to become just another casualty of the man’s attentions. She was right; he’d seen people who’d gotten just a little too obsessed with Ares, though he wasn’t the only one to evoke that sort of possessiveness.

He could accept that Ares was good at his job, that he was too good at it even. He watched Irja as she cooked, and he made a face when she glanced at him. ”I’m not sure whether I should be offended or relieved that I’m not the first he’s rattled,” he mused. Maybe a little bit of both.

”Of course I’m gonna let you be nice,” he said, almost offended. ”Like I’m going to turn down your cooking.” Even if he’d wanted to, he wouldn’t have been able to hold that resolve in the wake of those scents wafting through the air. He wouldn’t have been surprised to see someone else drift in, caught by them. ”I’m just not used to it,” he said, with a smile that almost looked normal on his lips. ”You being nice to poor old me.”

At least he was starting to use actual words again. Even if he was being a little dramatic. She smiled at him over her shoulder, an amiable sort of smile at that.
“I’ll give you the same advice as I give everyone else,” And he’d undoubtedly heard a variation of this once or twice. “The Red Star is a house of pleasure, not of overthinking.” Irja reminded him.

He could get whatever he wanted, without side-effects, if he would just accept that it was what he wanted.

Irja scoffed and shook her head.
“Rattling people is like his raison d’etre.” She said. “Have you seen him?” She asked, quickly chopping up some chives and adding the cheese to the frittata before turning back to face Tobias.
“Now you need to stop worrying about it before you end up obsessed as well.” She pressed on him, getting a plate out of the cupboard.

Irja snorted at the change in tune -- he was clearly getting back to being himself.
“You didn’t need a babysitter, and you could eat at home…?” She countered. “Not like this you can’t.” She added, wihle taking a slice out of the world’s fastest frittata for him and putting it on the plate.
“Plus,” She said, putting the plate down in front of him. “I’m always nice, you just don’t always agree.”

"Eat up," She ordered him, petting him on the head.

Tobias didn’t usually overthink when he was at the Red Star. Usually, he thought a whole hell of a lot less when he was there — and he sure as fuck hadn’t been thinking during his time with Ares. It had only been after that his doubts had started to surface, and that was what the problem was. He didn’t usually care… So why did he care this time?

”And that pleasure has not included danishes in too long. Do I need to bring you the jam?” He pouted a little.

He snorted, but he didn’t argue with her. His curiosity had been sated, and now it was time to let it go. It wasn’t like he was going to do it again, but he didn’t need to keep thinking about it and trying to analyze it. That wasn’t his style anyway.

”Okay, maybe not like this,” he allowed. The plate was barely in front of him before he pulled it to him, inhaling deeply and letting out a happy little noise. ”Irja, Irja, Irja… Maybe it was worth it, just to have this time with you.” He grabbed a fork. She didn't have to tell him to eat twice. ”And time with this beauty.” He was suddenly ravenous, and he started to eat even though it was hot enough to burn the roof of his mouth.

Irja barely resisted the urge to roll here eyes.
“It’s been three days.” She said deadpan. “It’s not like I don’t have anything better to do than bake you know.” She muttered. Like fixing up fragile male egos that had been manhandled by her Warlord Prince in a dress a little too hard, for example.

Whether it was the coffee, the fact that Ares’ influences were wearing off, or her good advice and priceless after care, it seemed Tobias was slowly getting his sea legs again. It almost made Irja wish she hadn’t reached out to help him, but he had looked quite forlorn sitting in that room, all by himself.

“Definitely not like this.” Irja corrected him. There was no way in Hell that Lucas or his mother cooked like Irja did. What little she knew of the Marasfields they weren’t exactly the homemaking types -- as was evidenced by Tobias and Lucas’ craving for just that in her kitchen.

“There are much easier ways to get my attention than letting Ares rile you out of your wits.” She said, because it wasn’t like she didn’t pay attention to Tobias and his cousin whenever they came in. Perhaps not this undivided, but she rarely ignored them. She just… didn’t encourage them. Or they’d never leave, and she’d have to explain to the Marasfield family why their best enforcers were getting chubby and barely visible on the street anymore.

Watching him go back to his old self -- ravenous and with too many useless flatteries, like calling her frittata beautiful -- Irja’s mind eased a little more too. She was about two seconds way from kissing the top of his head as if he actually belonger to the Red Star, but she resisted. He was still a business partner, not one of her strays or hard workers. There was a fine line that she wasn’t so willing to cross there, even if it blurred on nights like these.

”But have you even gotten the jam yet?” he persisted. He didn’t know when the craving for the damn things had gotten so fierce, but every time he went to the Star, that was all he could think about. He waved a hand. ”Sorry, sorry. It’s your own fault for being so damn good at making them though, you know.”

He rolled his eyes, but he didn’t comment. He knew it was definitely not like this, especially when he was usually left to his own devices — and while he wasn’t a terrible cook, he couldn’t make anything half as good as what Irja conjured up… which was one of the reasons he was there so often.

”I wasn’t riled out of my wits,” he grumbled between bites of the frittata, already more than halfway through it. ”I was still very much in my wits, thank you.” Even though they both knew he was lying, he had to at least try to patch up his ego. He had been rattled, too rattled, but now that he was away from Ares, it was getting easier to breathe again.
