Kalyan Shirazi

The Basics

Age: 80

Ethnicity: Hayllian
Birthplace: Shirazi Estate, outskirts of Kanjia, Chittorgarh, Hayll, Terreille
Current Location: Traveling Terrielle (presently northern Shalador)
Profession: Escort to Queen Kailash Shirazi

Caste:
Birthright Jewel: Yellow (CUT 24)
Offering Jewel: Rose (CUT 54)

Face Claim: Arsalan Ghasemi

The Body

Height: 6'0
Body Type: Lean, slender; more wiry than muscular.
Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: Palest gold-yellow; inherited from his grandmother, Padma Shirazi

Appearance:
Wiry, slender, and trim - Kalyan Shirazi favors a more slight build, accentuated with well-tailored clothing, to making himself look well-muscled and handsome as his father and uncle. His features are unmistakably Shirazi, from the strong nose to the paler-than-honey gold of his eyes that could only have come directly from Padma Shirazi herself. Like his mother, Kalyan favors a neat and attractive appearance, maintaining that the more polished and quiet he remains, the more he'll be underestimated by others. To that end, he wears slightly plainer clothing than his sister, and wears minimal - but finely made - jewelry; the goal is to be the shadows behind Kailash's sunlight. He does permit himself more artistry in the form of tattoos, of which he has three: a lotus, down the outside length of his right forearm; his sister's name in scrawling script over his heart; the final one, a massive pouncing tiger which stretches up his thigh to claw into his left hip.

The Mind

Craft Strengths:
Calming Spells
Tracking Spells
Aural Shields
Psychic Wounding
Craft Weaknesses: Most aggressive combat, or hyper physical, spells are a mystery to Kalyan. Although he can produce physical shields, his nature is too steady and even to be much good at spells that require the kind of temper and knife's-edge reaction that many of the more combat specific spells do. In so many ways, he is more his grandmother's image than any of his parents' - words, and maneuvering, are Kal's stronger skills. Likewise although he can heat and cool water, most intense hearth craft has never been an interest or a requirement of his education, and he relies on those who excel in those areas to compensate for his lack.

Personal Strengths: steady, a good listener, capable of calming his twin sister, loyal to a fault, adaptable in most situations, a quick learner, skilled at diplomacy, an experienced mediator, good at various mediums of art, also good with small mechanical devices.
Personal Weaknesses: suffers from near-debilitating anxiety, borderline co-dependent with his twin sister, a little too good at separating his emotions from his decision-making, capable of shutting out anyone except Kailash, desperately wants his parents to see him, would also very much like to feel as though he has value to them.

Personality:

The Darkness gave Kalyan Shirazi more than just his grandmother's eyes; the Prince possesses all of her cunning, and none of her bite, a feat to which he attributes his Aunt's more gentle rearing. From Kalyani, whom he is named for, he received the ability to couch perception in compassion and apply it for the genuine betterment of others. Kalyan prefers to use both sparingly. His grandmother is more disliked than loved, and his aunt is more discounted than listened to: Kalyan aims to be both loved and listened to. His lofty ambitions of earning respect are, as yet, just that. He's content to let his twin sister take the lead in most things, as she has since birth, arranging things in the background to open any doors and tear down any obstacles that might stand in her way.

The two have shared everything since their conception: a womb, the distant affections of their parents, the deep desire for more, and an equal certainty that they'll never get it cooped up on the family grounds. As a result, they often act in concert and, though it frequently appears that Kal defers to his sister, their actions are usually agreed upon (even if it is non-verbal.)

Where Kailash might be the more passionate, impetuous, half of the duo Kalyan is known for a more steady nature. He's quick to soothe his sister, and often to mediate disputes between herself and the adults who currently control them. (See: spends his time opening doors and removing obstacles.) Over the last few years, Kal has gotten quite good at navigating the weighty emotions of their rather tumultuous family. He knows that Padma will have plans for the twins, and that their mother Abhilasha will as well. Like their father, Kal is inclined to carve their own paths, but he seems more interested in arranging things to his satisfaction at home, rather than abandoning it altogether.

It might seem that his sister's recent decision to flee Chittorgargh with a certain hearth witch have set his plans askew, but it would be a mistake to underestimate the young Prince who knows his sister better than anyone. The more distance she can put between the family matriarchs without burning her bridges altogether, the better the odds of Kailash inheriting the family name and power while she's still free enough to make use of it.

History:

Born mere minutes after his twin sister, Kalyan has spent most of his life in the shadows of those whom came before him. In those earliest years of his life, he was the easier baby; cried less, slept more, and grew in steady and reliable milestones. By the time he had his feet under him, his parents had returned to their own lives, and left their children in their wake. Later, Kal would learn to approve of the decision, but as a child he felt forgotten; like the stuffed toy Kai had left under his bed for weeks on end without even realizing she'd abandoned it. He had all the love he required, between his twin and his aunt and the passing visits of his parents.

It was visibility, a sense of having his worth recognized, that he felt lacking so sorely.

When Kailash was sent to Ajmer for her training under Queen Hati, of course Kalyan went with her. The twins didn't go anywhere if they weren't going together, and with their aunt to continue functioning as their caregiver and guardian, there was no reason not to send Kal along as well. It was a theme the boy became used to; his father and uncle were powerful Warlord Princes, and his own caste and Jewel made him less valuable as a marriage tool for the time being. So his training was left to the men of his cousin's Court while Kailash - the jewel of the family - received her own. Kal learned a lot, despite the Queen's lack of interest in politics, it seemed her men managed some of it around her. Bhaskara was adept at spinning deals and ensuring he made deals from a position of strength. Gautam was a capable Steward, one who worked hard at managing the Queen's image through correspondance, giving Kal insight to how a Court could shape the way the world at large viewed one's Queen. From Vihaan, he learned patience and when to act.

He also learned all the lessons he was supposed to be learning.

The return, years later, to Chittorgargh was harder on Kalyan than it was on his sister. In many ways, Kailash was at least delighted by a return to a greater sense of culture and activity; the quiet of Ajmer was easier to think in, and the Shirazi Estate was a place that often reduced Kal to one of his panic attacks. In time these lessened, with the assistance of his aunt who taught him new coping mechanisms for the noise and clutter and expectations. Unfortunately, the better Kal got, the worse his aunt seemed to be. Eventually, she stopped painting entirely, and he could barely coax her out of her room. It was also around this time that he found his grandmother pursuing more of his attention and time, and he began to realize that the family was nothing more than a large game of chess, with Padma making all of the moves.

How long would it be, he wondered, before she began to move himself and his sister as the newest pawns on the board? While Kal knew he could manage it well enough - Padma had begun to show her moves already - it was unlikely Kailash would thrive in that sort of environment and there was nothing that would convince him to subject her to it. When his sister confided to him that their father and aunt had disappeared - and that she'd told their father about Aunt Aly's ailment - Kalyan began to see the writing on the wall, and plot out his own moves.

It just so happened that Kailash's suggestion to leave home meshed perfectly with the groundwork Kal was laying; he suggested that, for her own safety, she secure her Virgin Night before they departed. He'd keep his sister out of the family machinations long enough to see her usurp Padma - and then the entirety of House Shirazi would know what the twins were capable of, and how well they could play the game.
