Doleri
Inspired by: Griffons, hippogriffs, and Greek mythology
Written by: Jones

Average Lifespan: 80 (120 max)
Average Height:
3’5 to 5ft at the shoulder; 8ft long
Average Weight:
280-500lbs

Origin: unknown

Appearance:
There is little to differentiate the Doleri from any other race. Like most shifter-types they possess a completely normal human body.

In their second form they become majestic, if terrifying beasts. Four legged and dangerous. Wings spanning twice the length of their mighty bodies. The head of a bird of prey- from stocky eagles to lithe falcons. Chest flowing down into feathered forelegs that match the shape of their cat back legs, but end in sharp taloned claws instead of paws. The feathers slowly fade into the torso, growing smaller until they are replaced completely by the fur and backside of a lion. Deadly on both ends, and from the air too.

Behavior:
An atypical race, the Doleri are not born as such. They are the Blood they come from. Adhere to the only cultures and social systems that they know. To be Doleri is not in one’s family history or blood, though that is the price of their power. No, there is no secret, just sparsely known fact. To become Doleri, you must die.

The trick, as most will tell you, is not staying dead.

Every Doleri is created by another Doleri. Heightened senses draw them to large amounts of blood. The prey drive them in stronger than in other people. Sometimes it is pity, each individual decides for themselves why they reach into the Abyss after a freshly forgone soul. Perhaps they are not even truly dead, just too far gone for life to be detected. Using the natural power of the blood spilled a Doleri can enter the psyche of their new progeny to apply new life. Ancient craft that changes them fundamentally, giving them a second skin and new skills. Flight, sharper instincts, a keener eye for finding prey, and less receptive to the effects of Healing Craft.

Long-lived races will find their years cut drastically by this gift. While those of shorter heritage may last longer than their kin. None usually mind, since they were dying anyway.

Fledglings usually stay with their progenitor for a few months. Learning the boundaries of their new shape. Honing their abilities. Gatherings are rare, since the members are so sparse and far flung. They do not make open efforts to conceal their existence, but they are so few that they have fallen to the tombs of myth and legend by standard opinion. Most return to their lives as they were before, though some take their second chance and run with it.
