@Bismark

”I need to speak to Lirielle,” he told Aria for the thousandth time, trying to get up from his bed.

She pushed him down again, gently but firmly, and shook her head. ”Lirielle’s fine,” she said soothingly. ”You’re not able to get up just yet. Your broken bones are healing, but it’s going to take some time.”

So why hasn’t she visited me? he wanted to ask, but at the same time, he didn’t want to put that pressure on Aria’s shoulders. And… he knew the answer to that. It was the same reason he’d felt a distance between himself and the rest of the court: he’d utterly failed her. He still felt the terror of facing a Green Warlord Prince in rut, the knowledge that if he lost…

But he’d been beaten senseless, only to be knocked out within seconds, and he couldn’t quite keep the shame at bay. He’d always been the protector, the one to stand up for others, but he had just… failed. Part of him wanted to step down and give someone else the chance to serve, but the bigger part of him was determined to step up and be better, to sort out the mess and make sure it never, ever happened again.

His sister had visited him, and Bristol had carefully offered to work with him on his fighting skills. Between that and Mihail’s guards, he knew he’d have a chance to truly learn how to fight. He knew how to exercise, and he knew fighting in theory, but he’d never really thought he’d need to fight in earnest. He’d been so, so very stupid.

”Then I need to talk to Mihail,” he said at long last. ”Will you ask him to come see me?”

Aria hesitated but then nodded. ”I’ll do that,” she promised.

At least there was that. Bryson took in a deep, shuddering breath that hurt his ribs, and he fought back a wince. He wasn’t going to show weakness, not now, not when his Queen needed him to get better so he could be at her side.

He was barely back home, barely having caught his breath, barely gotten his temper under control. He had only just begun to scrub the dried up blood from his hands -- because he couldn’t show up to Lirielle’s with blood under his nails -- when Aria interrupted him.
“You okay?” She asked. Mihail cast her a confused look over his shoulder.
“Of course. Why wouldn’t I be?” He asked, the words clipped and a little sharp. Defensive. From spending too much time with that Marasfield bastard.

“Well you rushed out earlier, without an explanation.” Aria said, frowning at him and trying to peer past him. Mihail quickly turned his back towards her again, blocking her view as he continued to scrub at his hands.
“Oh. That.” He said. “Yeah, I’m fine.” He said, his voice a little calmer. “Just had something to take care of.” He muttered vaguely, not wanting to advertise what he’d done, though his sisters would undoubtedly find out sooner or later.

“There’s something else you should take care of,” Aria said with a deep intake of breath.
“What’s that?” He asked, checking his nails for blood, but finding none.
“Bryson.” Aria answered him, making his brain briefly come to an abrupt stop. His mind had been thinking of a whole other sort of taking care of than Aria, clearly and for a hot second he wondered if he needed to be rid of Bryson as a witness too.

Probably best if he shook the tension and energy in his body as quickly as possible. This was a one time deal, he had no intention of every… liquidating someone, ever again.

“I’m seeing Lirielle first.” He said with a shake of his head as he turned towards her, drying his hands on a towel.
“He’s been waiting for days. Someone needs to see him and talk to him, because Lirielle isn’t ready.” Aria cut him sharply, grabbing him by the arm and stopping him before he could walk past her.

“But Lirielle--” He began, but Aria just fixed him with a look that was one straight out of the moms’ playbook, effectively cutting off what he had been about to say.
“If you don’t see him, I don’t know how long I can keep him away from her, and the way he is now, he’ll only upset her more.” Aria said -- and of course she annoyingly had a point. She always did. That was another one out of the moms’ playbook.

“Fuck.” He scowled. “Fine.” He had five minutes to spare, and Bryson’s rooms were on the way to Lirielle’s anyway.
“He’s in the infirmary, still.” Aria pointed out, evidently able to read his mind.

Mihail made a face and groaned, but headed in the opposite direction from the queen’s quarters, making a beeline for the infirmary. He didn’t want to stay long, and he knocked quickly on the door, leaning in past the doorway to look at Bryson -- still on the bed, covered in his sister’s healing craft, and still looking like a warm shit on a warm day.
“You needed to see me…?” Mihail asked, without actually entering the room. It was rude, but he had more to do than… make Bryson feel better. Though he supposed he ought to ask at least…
“Are you feeling better?”

When Aria left, Bryson was left alone with his thoughts — which he didn’t much like, because he went back and forth between berating himself for having been so stupid and planning what he’d do when he was off bed rest. It felt like that was never going to happen, and he was drowning in his restlessness. He’d never been stuck in bed this long before, and he hated it.

When he heard the knock at the door, hope fluttered within him, and he wanted desperately for it to be Lirielle. It ate at him that she hadn’t visited him yet, and it worried him as well as… well, it hurt, even though he understood it. Seeing him wouldn’t be easy for her, especially when he’d failed her — which he was never, ever going to do again!

He struggled to sit up, ignoring the pain of his ribs, and he was propped up when the door opened. He didn’t bother to hide his disappointment when it turned out to be Mihail, and he sank back against the bed. He’d wanted to talk to the Master of the Guard, but now that he was there, all he felt was guilt. He hadn’t had a chance to really speak to the Warlord, and he was dreading it as much as he needed it.

When the man didn’t come inside, dread rose within him. Mihail had to blame him for this. Wouldn’t he have, if their situations were reversed?

”Fine,” he said dismissively. ”How’s she doing, Mihail?” he asked, his voice pleading. ”Is she okay?”

It was a loaded fucking question and Mihail was somehow caught off guard by it. How was she doing. Was she okay.

Of course she wasn’t fucking okay. Bryson had to be aware of that, but it was also a logical question to ask.
“No.” Mihail said with a shake of his head. She wasn’t okay. She was a weepy, vulnerable mess of a young woman, who blamed herself, who was too scared to be in a room with most of the people who had once been close to her.

She was about as far from okay as you could get.

“She’s doing as well as can be expected, given the circumstances.” He said, leaning a little more casually against the doorjamb -- because he still wanted to be on his way to Lirielle. But Bryson was a friend too, he supposed. And really no match against someone like Dustan and his green.

“She doesn’t want to be alone, but she also doesn’t want anyone near her,” He added with half a shrug. “It’s hard on everyone.” He pointed out, by means of an explanation as to why he hadn’t been holding a similar vigil for Bryson, who was physically worse off than Lirielle. Arguably so, anyway.
“Aria says you’re healing, and that you were lucky it wasn’t worse too.” He tried to change the subject, because he wasn’t quite ready to talk to Bryson about Lirielle.

His eyes closed when Mihail responded in the negative — just as he’d been expecting, but not what he’d been hoping. He’d wanted to hear that she was recovering, that Nicai had helped to heal her chalice and that she was going to be fine. But he knew better, really. Lirielle had always been fragile, and she relied on those around her to protect her.

Of course, that protection had always been from politics before, from emotions. This was the first time it had turned physical.

He opened his eyes when Mihail continued, watching him. Aria had told him she was okay, but he’d known better. He’d wanted the truth, and he’d known Mihail would give it to him — even if it wasn’t what he really wanted to hear. But he’d wanted the truth, and he’d gotten it.

”Does she want to see me?” he couldn’t help but ask, his voice soft. Has she asked about me? he wanted to continue, but he was scared of the answer. ”Does she…” He sighed, running a hand harshly through his hair and grimacing. ”I’m never going to let something like that happen again,” he finally said. ”Bristol is going to teach me some things, and I’m hoping you and the other guards can help me too.”

He shook his head. He didn’t want to talk about himself. He wanted to know how his Queen was doing and what he could do to help her. ”Have you heard from… him?” he asked, his lips twisting into a snarl.

Mihail wet his lips and sighed, shaking his head.
“She doesn’t want to see anyone right now, Bryson. The only reason she tolerates some of us is because it’s worse when she’s alone.” He explained, hoping it would make the man feel a little better that it wasn’t anything personal against him. That it was happening to all of them, that everyone was on edge because of it.

“It’s fine, Bryson, you did what you could and you got her out.” He assured him, even if he sounded a little short. “We’re all grateful for that.” He added with a small smile. And none of them was going to let her be at risk, ever again.

He eyed Bryson, not sure how much he knew, or how much he needed to know, at that. He had suffered some trauma too, and in that regard he deserved an honest answer; that he’d scrubbed his blood off of his hands right before he’d come to the infirmary. On the other hand the less people knew, the better. And thanks to Tobias there were already exponentially more people involved than he’d wanted to.

“He ran.” Mihail said, which was as close to the truth as he wanted to be for now.

It didn’t make him feel better that she didn’t want to see anyone. It worried him, made him even more concerned about her, and he let out a slow breath. He wished, desperately, that he could be one of the people at her side. He envied Mihail for being one of the us she allowed close. ”No one’s leaving her alone, right? Who else is she letting close to her?” If she rejected him when she was well, though…

He couldn’t think that way. He had to think positively. She was going to want him around. She was going to get through this. He was never going to let her get hurt like that again.

He knew he’d done what he could, but he knew it wasn’t enough, too. It hadn’t been easy to get her out, and he’d damn near collapsed more than once on the way back. He didn’t feel the need to explain that, didn’t feel the need to defend himself — but then, he did. He wanted to let Mihail know just how much he’d tried.

”It wasn’t enough,” he muttered, but he sighed. ”Never again, Mihail. I’ll never let her get hurt again.”

He scowled, though, at the news about Dustan. ”He ran,” he repeated bitterly. ”Of fucking course that coward ran. I will hunt that bastard down as soon as I’m out of this bed.” Never mind that he’d failed to protect himself or Lirielle before. He’d figure something out.

He tried not to be annoyed, but after the encounter with Tobias Marasfield, everything felt vaguely like criticism. Mihail struggled to plaster a reassuring smile on his face -- resulting in a slightly flat effort of it -- as he shook his head.
“Of course not, wouldn’t dream of it.” He said, looking Bryson over once more. He looked like he was healing alright and Aria said he would.

“My sisters, I think my mom was here the other day.” He said with a shrug, he’d spent an inordinate amount of time with her, and he knew by and large who she did and didn’t tolerate. It was mostly the first circle women, and her triangle. Bar Bryson, but he wasn’t sure if she would refuse him or not.
“She’s asked about you, wanted to make sure you were okay.” He said, to put some of Bryson’s worries at ease.

“It’s fine, Bry,” Mihail said grimly. “We all fucked up, I should’ve been there, there should’ve been more protection in general, we shouldn’t have trusted some Warlord Prince just because he was a friend once -- clearly they can’t be trusted.” He said, his temper already rising, and he drew a deep breath.
“Just get better. That’ll be the best way to help her now,” He said emphatically. “Then she won’t have to worry about you anymore.”

He wasn’t sure what to say in regards to Dustan and hunting him down. Mihail could still feel the itch of dried blood on his hands, and he was still riled from the exchange with the thug he’d hired to help him with the deed. And even though he only had minor regrets about the execution of the plan, and not the actual execution… He wasn’t sure he could tell Bryson. Or anyone, for that matter. Just Lirielle.

“We’ll talk about it when Aria gives you the all clear.” he said, hoping that by then Bryson’s thirst for vengeance would be fading in lieu of serving Lirielle again.

Bryson was desperate to see her, desperate to know she was all right, but he knew if he tried to get up again, Aria was going to have his ass. He might’ve been in pain, but he still could’ve gone to go see her… But it made him feel a little better to know she’d asked for him. He hadn’t been sure, not after he’d failed her so spectacularly, and now so much time was passing with him kept away. ”You can tell her I’m completely fine,” he said quickly. ”I’ll be up and around in no time, and the first thing I’ll do is see her.”

He shook his head though. ”Warlord Princes aren’t feral animals, Mihail,” he said wearily. ”There was no reason to think he’d go into rut. The odds of it happening…” He didn’t even know what to say. ”She’s been visiting old friends for two years now. I’m going to learn how to defend her, and next time she wants to go somewhere, we’ll just take a few more people with us.”

”We need to find him,” Bryson said urgently. They’d have to make sure there was justice for what he’d done. He knew that in theory, Dustan had an excuse for what he’d done. It wasn’t a good one, but the law was on his side. Still, he was going to damn well make sure he suffered for what he’d done.

“Your face tells a different story.” Mihail said deadpan. “This one was as feral as they come.” He added, merciless about the plight of the asshole just as he’d been when the guy had been begging for his life as well.

Hearing Bryson vow the same thing as he had already vowed a dozen times, and plan the same things he’d been planning since it had happened, as if he was in Mihail’s position almost made him snap again. Almost, because he caught himself before he could remind the man unkindly that it wasn’t up to him, it was up to Mihail to decide who and what they should bring in terms of protection.

“We’ll revisit our game plans.” He agreed, as amiable as he could manage to be in that moment. He liked Bryson well enough, but he didn’t need him to start telling him how to manage the situation. He didn’t need fucking anyone to tell him. He could learn from his own mistakes.

“I’ve been working on it already Bryson. And there’s no we until you’re fully healed, so just relax, okay?”

Bryson rubbed his eyes, but he didn’t argue. Dustan had been crazed, like an animal, when he’d gone at Lirielle. He’d done everything he could to keep the Warlord Prince away from her, but… it had been futile. ”Yeah,” he confirmed, not noticing the use of was.

Offering Mihail a tired smile, Bryson nodded. ”I’ll do everything I can.” He didn’t even know what all he could do, but there had to be something beyond just working on himself. He had to be prepared for when Lirielle wanted to go places again.

”I know, I know,” he said, wincing. ”I just feel so fucking helpless. I can’t do shit from this bed. I can’t even go to her and help.” He sighed. ”I’m really glad she has you, at least.”

He wasn’t sure what else he could say to Bryson. He couldn’t make him heal faster, not really. He wasn’t that good with healing craft, not nearly good enough to compete with his sibling, anyway. Maybe he could lend his jewel strength… it wasn’t like he needed to spare his opal for Dustan anymore.

“I’ll see if I can help Aria to get you on your feet faster.” He offered. “Not much more I can do I’m afraid.” He admitted a little bitterly. It wasn’t really his job, but he just wanted all of this to be over already, and for things to go back to normal. Or as close as they could get.

“I’ll tell her you’re sending your love.” He offered. “And who knows, maybe she’ll want to leave her room one of these days.” He added hopefully. With the news of Dustan being dead, surely she ought to feel a little lighter.

”I know she’s already doing as much as she can,” Bryson said wearily. ”She’s helping it all go quicker, but it’s still just… not quick enough.” Even if he’d been able to go to her right away, it still wouldn’t have been quick enough for him. He needed to see her with his own eyes, to make sure she was really okay.

”I’d appreciate that, though,” he said, flashing a grateful smile to Mihail. ”The sooner I can get out of this damn bed, the better.” He touched his torso above one of his broken ribs, grimacing. ”The lack of pain would just be an added bonus.”

He didn’t smile at Mihail’s words. ”She isn’t leaving her room?” he asked sharply. That was news to him, and he straightened. ”I’m going to go to her,” he said, determined. ”It’s not healthy for her to stay in there.”
