Average Weight: 1.5 to 4.5 lbs

Origin:  Corvians are native to the Realm of Terrielle, though a sizeable population fled to Kaeleer when Witch conquered Askavi Terrielle. Corvian legends say the race was born in Askavi Terrielle, and it’s true that there are slightly more Corvians in that Territory, but they are an adaptable and wide-ranging species and can be found pretty much everywhere.

Appearance:

Corvians are almost always pure black, though leucistic coloring occurs slightly more frequently than in other species, especially amongst those born to the Black Widow caste.  Their feathers are iridescent, so they reflect a multitude of subdued colors in bright light.  Their eyes are uniformly black.  They have thick black bills which are slightly hooked at the end.  Juveniles can have gray-blue feathers that darken as they age.  Their typical cry is a deep croaking sound, but they have a wide range of vocalizations.  They can even mimic other sounds, including human speech.

Behavior: Corvians are a highly social species, and are rarely found alone.  They can range over a huge area, and enjoy traveling.  While they do form Courts, their Courts are not tied to physical locations so much as the presence of a Queen.  Where the Queen is, that's where her Court is.  When two Courts run into each other there is often a lot of shouting and posturing as they figure out their ranks in relation to each other.  Once that's determined, they usually settle down and can work quite well together. until one or both Courts decide to move on.

Corvians usually nest in the late winter, and lay between 2 and 5 cream and brown splotched eggs.  The mother incubates the eggs but the father and other males usually stay nearby to drive off predators and help bring the mother food.  Eggs usually hatch in a little less than a month, and then it's another month before they fledge and are able to fly on their own.  Unlike their non-Blood kin, young Covians tend to stay with their parents for several years, at least until they have their Birthright Ceremony.  Then they usually go off to join other flocks or Courts.

Corvians love shiny objects of all sorts, and love to decorate their nests with whatever they can find.  Perhaps unsurprisingly those who wear Jewels are exceedingly proud of them, and the surest way to tell a Corvian from their unBlooded kin is the Jewel nestled against their breast.  Corvian Black Widows love incorporating shiny bits into their webs - be that Jewel chips or just shiny trash they've found.

They are fascinated with humans, both Blood and non-Blood, and will often nest near human habitation just to watch the silly things the two-leggers get up to.  Also, human refuse is often very good food.  They also will follow humans who look to be going to a battle.  After the killing is done, Corvians and their un-Blooded kin descend to feed on the dead.  This hasn't earned them a very good reputation amongst those who see it as desecration, but to the Corvians, it's just a part of life.  If they find someone who's dead, but still retains enough Craft to potentially come back as demon dead, they usually use their Craft to burn the person out.  Dead should be dead in Corvian thought.

UnBlooded ravens usually have to wait for larger predators to rip open a corpse for eating, but with the use of Craft, Corvians don't face the same restrictions.  Traditionally, it is the Master of the Guard's duty to blast open a corpse that the Court has found.  Then the Queen and her Triangle eat first, followed by the First Circle and on down.  The eyes are traditionally saved for the Court Seer as Corvian lore states that consuming the eyes of the dead lends clarity to a Black Widow's visions.  The eyes of Blood are considered especially valuable for this purpose, which does not earn the Corvians many friends.

Corvians are curious to a fault, quite willing to stick their beaks in wherever they might find something interesting.  They're also quick learners, and once they figure something out, or learn something new and interesting, they tell everyone.  Corvian do not keep secrets.  In truth, they don't even really understand the concept of secrets.  Information is wonderful and amazing, and should be shared, shouldn't it?  Those who've had a lot of dealings with humans have learned that sometimes humans will exchange shiny objects for information, and shiny objects are worth not saying things until said shinies are acquired.

As a general rule, Corvians love the human Blood. They’re so interesting! And they just do such funny things! But they don’t tend to involve themselves in politics or conflicts, preferring to remain neutral, or out of it entirely. It helps that they can fly and don’t tend to have strong ties to particular places, so if the human Blood get too bothersome, they can always just fly away.  Even Witch was never able to really control or affect the Corvians as a whole, if only because tracking them down was too much work.

Names and Naming Traditions: Names are considered a privilege in Corvian society, but also a very personal thing.  When a Corvian completes their Birthright Ceremony, they display their new Jewel to the attending Flock and announce their name, and then the whole Flock with call it back to them.  Before this they are just called "Fledge" or "Fledgling."  They will announce their name again after their Offering, and many use that as an opportunity to change their names to something they feel fits them better as adults.  It is considered rude to refer to a Corvian by their old name once they have picked a new one.

Because names are considered a privilege, the right to have a name can be taken away by a Flock's Queen.  This is usually done for offenses that aren't enough to warrant death or exile, and is usually temporary.  If a Queen declares that a particular Corvian has lost the right to their name, no one in the Flock will refer to them as anything other than "hey, you!"  until the Queen recognizes that Corvian by their name again.  Such punishments rarely last more than a few weeks, but are taken very seriously by all involved.

Corvian names do not tend to be long, and often sound harsh to human ears.  They are often heavy on alveolar and velar sounds such as "t", "k", "r" and guttural "g"  Because of the limitations of beaks, their names rarely include more labial sounds, such as "m", "p" or "b".  While they technically do use the sibilans such as "s" and "z", these are usually whistles more than voiced letters and rarely begin or end a name.  Corvians don’t consider any names inherently “Male” or “Female”
