Origin:

The Vulcari are an ancient and noble breed of canine. Historically reclusive, they were only rediscovered (having previously been assumed extinct) seventy-five years ago. Once, many millennia ago they were found throughout the living realms. When their home territory closed its borders the breed was all but forgotten by the outside world as centuries passed.

Their humble origins in Philan are whimsical- all the makings of a good bedtime tale. Steeped in tradition and retold through countless generations. Legend holds that long, long ago, in the earliest days of the blood a Queen of Philan visited ancient Scelt to negotiate trade with a chieftain there. In the course of her visit the Pixie Queen complimented the horses of the tribe so often that the chieftain wished to give her one. Being so small, however, she had no place to keep such a large creature. So he gifted her instead five runt puppies from the best dogs in his district. Finding them just as useful and clever as a horse the pups were used as such on the Queen’s return to Philan. They were bred to stay small gradually becoming the stocky, short legged dogs we see today. How true the legends are is debatable. What is certain, is that the Vulcari native to Philan in modern history lead rich and fulfilling lives right alongside the pixie islanders. Non Kindred of the breed enjoy work as beasts of burden, guardians and battle steeds. The Kindred, however, are hold positions in courts, are honored warriors, prosperous farmers, and even traveling scholars. In Philan they are beloved neighbors to their Pixie compatriots, respected as full citizens of the territory. For those native to the islands it can be a shock to travel to Blood territories where they’re treated as pets.

Regardless of whence they came these clever canines have once again begun to flourish. With an astonishingly high rate of kindred amongst them, some say due to their millennia of pixie ties, they are favored as companions. Their numbers steadily grow in Kaeleer. After  Philan the highest populations are in Dea Al Mon, Glacia, and Little Terreille though Nharkava and Dharo are close behind. Scelt, naturally, prefers the larger Sceltie breed and is the only human territory in the realm where Vulcari are scarce. Few Vulcari have settled permanently in Terreille to date but this is expected to change with time.

Appearance:
The coat of the common Vulcari can vary from fawns so pale they are nearly white to tricolors that are black from head to tail; brindle, sable, tricolor, grey, several shades of red or any combination of those colors are possible. A medium shade of red with white accents seems to be the most common variant, though greys and tricolors are almost just as populace. Regardless of color the coat itself is short or medium in length fur that is soft to the touch. The coat is thicker about the chest, and tail for those that have them. Naturally occurring bobtails are not uncommon. Supposed ‘long haired’ Vulcari usually have a Sceltie ancestor somewhere in their recent genepool. Those that settle in cooler regions have no trouble adapting to snow thanks to a perpetual double coat. Unfortunately this also means that the breed sheds continuously, instead of just as the seasons change. This warm coat does not hinder their ability to thrive in warmer climates, perhaps due to their more compact size.

The Vulcari have a short stature with an almost disproportionate body length. Built for speed, despite their short legs. However the long back coupled with their low, stocky bodies makes them prone to fractures when Craft or great care is not taken while getting up or down from moderate heights.

Often likened in appearance to foxes the breed boasts large ears that sit on a flat but broad skull. They have round eyes that are set close together giving them a kindly face. The long muzzle, however also helps those charming eyes to look stern when they glare down their nose at naughty pups… or people.

Behavior:

It is is with good reason the Vulcari are considered excellent companions- they have a very agreeable temperament. With family, and those they consider family, they are openly affectionate. Strangers are welcomed by the friendly canines, even if they are closely supervised for suspicious behavior. In fact, a Vulcari would rather be in bad company than have none at all. They form close knit families and dislike being alone when avoidable. Which is probably in their best interest since most seem prone to overindulging on food. Almost every member goes through at least one period of obesity when left to their own devices.

While their playful personalities and intelligence are well known it should be noted that the Vulcari do not take well to teasing. Juveniles are especially prone to taking offense, due to their sensitive natures. With age comes a maturity that leaves them more level headed. You will certainly know if you offend a Vulcari, though, as they are a vocal breed.

Many who live alongside Vulcari companions are amused to find that their furry friends have an odd tendency to make their own dens or family lairs. They enjoy living alongside their human friends, but at the end of the day they want a space all of their own. In Vulcari communities these clever creatures often dig large dens in the small hills that dot the Philan countryside. Much like a real house they small compartments, or rooms, for each member of the family. Pups will often leave their parents care by two years old. Some strike out on their own as soon as they finish their Birthright Ceremony.

The Vulcari have a very unique method of travel that involves a blend of air walking and Craft enhanced jumping to bound along at great distances that would take their little legs twice the amount of time to cover. Because this funny habit is ingrained in Vulcari society it is very rare to see them use the Winds, even if their jewel rank makes it a safe method of travel. Another peculiarity specific to their breed is the early training all pups receive in healing craft. It is vital that they all know basic healing due to a genetic clotting disorder that affects many members of the breed.

There are no wholly Vulcari courts. This is in part to the fact that breed has not been wild in hundreds of thousands of years, so has lived alongside one race or another. And also in part to the fact that their Queens are very rare, even by the standards of other races. Of course the desire to serve is no less present, leading the more adventurous to travel far and wide seeking a Queen they might bond to. In other territories they will serve in courts of other Kindred when allowed. Rumors have it that there are even several Vulcari in Arcenian cat courts in Glacia.

Those that do not serve can hold a variety of positions in any open minded society. Outside of Philan they are seen mostly as companions. However they are capable of raising livestock such as geese and sheep, and even planting crops with the aid of Craft (they the digging just fine on their own of course). Scholarly pursuits are also celebrated and traveling academic groups are found throughout Kaeleer. Their patient personalities make Priestesses excellent educators, and what child doesn’t enjoy a lesson taught by a fluffy dog?

It is an unspoken expectation that all Vulcari of a certain age will settle down to mate. This is a purely a social phenomenon and those born several generations outside of Philan find it easier to never settle down or mate. Those that do wish to have a family however take the task very seriously. Since the breed mates for life choosing a mate is an important process. Almost a year of courtship is involved. Mating is so important that the breed have a biennial festival dedicated solely to finding their life partner. Outside of Philan the festival, called Astardag, occurs in or near major cities during the first spring thaw. All Vulcari over the age of ten will congregate for a week of festive romping, hunting, and displays of Craft mastery in hopes of attracting their mate. Vulcari matchmakers are traveling Priestesses or Warlords that make a living forming unions between their own breed, and even humans. Their renowned for their ability to recognize complementary personality types and love advice that leads to happy marriages or matings.
