Shoulders curving in self consciously Gideon walked by Lady Reed’s room. Again. For the tenth time in the last hour.

He was not being strange!

He was just waiting. And he liked to pace when he was waiting. Or worrying. Or worrying while he waited. His lady was a good lady. They were lucky to have her in Dendrabelle. She had been... unsettled of late, though. What with the murder and tree burning, who wasn’t at least nervous?

Gideon was nervous. Increasingly as the minutes ticked by while he waited, and worried, for Lady Reed to appear for dinner. Sometimes he worried she would go in and never come out. Sneak off to an easier place. Some place where the fall harvest was underway. Tree lined orchards heavy with fat fruit instead of rotten roots. It was his job to worry, he thought, about her emotional well being.

To Gideon the purpose of a lady’s triangle was very clear. A Steward to guard her politically, a Master of the Guard to protect her bodily, and an Escort to ease the burdens on her spirit. Who better for such a responsibility than a priest?

So he paced by again, stopping this time and turning on his heel to face the door. Certain he had heard the sound of the knob turning. A smile and greeting warm on his lips as he shoved a hank of dark hair out of his eyes. "Lady? Good evening, Lady Reed. Were you, um, you were going to dinner, yes?" He stammered happily.

Was he out there, Vesa wondered? Waiting, or pacing, for her to come out? A hint of nervousness curled under the door, the faint sound of a leather sole against the hardwood floor coming with it. Vesa thought he must be, bristles tugging at her scalp as she brushed her hair.

She worried about his waiting as she finished getting ready. Worried that he was bored or fretful. Sometimes she thought about inviting him in. But then how bored would he be? Pacing as she brushed her hair. One hundred strokes, like she’d been taught as a child. It helped center her, the ritual of it. It would be distracting, having an audience.

Guilt pulled at her more than any knots.

Count finished, Vesa set her brush back in its place, fingers lingering on the redwood handle. She still didn’t have any answers. There had been a plan, she knew. Magda had written her about it. Some sort of short tree. The details escaped her just then, as she been able to read the letter since. And she couldn’t remember, either, the conversation they’d had. All of her frozen. Seated stiffly across from the territory queen. Talked at while she was frozen instead. Stuck.

Shivering, Vesa abandoned her chair and all but rushed out of the room. She’d let the fall rains wash the worst of the ash away. And then she’d try and read the letter again.

”Lord Loch!” She’d almost run him over! Matching his smile, Vesa wondered if they would ever be anything other than lord and lady. The urge to call him simply Gideon was always there at the tip of her tongue. But she left it to him, and so far.. well. Here they were! Hands fluttering for a moment between them. Nervous, unsure, before settling both around his arm. ”I was! Yes. You’ve come to take me?”That wasn’t right. Vesa adjusted her grip. One hand for his one arm. No need to clutch at him like a desperate farm girl.

”Sorry, sorry, my lady.” Ah! Old fool. Hovering was rude, he reminded himself, still standing too close. Perpetually in the way. Stepping back his head ducked apologetically. Wearing a grin even as he chastised his own blundering.

As her hands caught up his arm, just above the elbow Gideon’s face brightened into a smile. No harm, no foul. At least he hadn’t knocked her over. Perhaps he was more graceful than his long limbs made him feel- he couldn’t recall ever jostling a lady in his escort. He moved to pat one of the hands she held him with, but it slipped away. Falling into a more appropriate stance. Less natural, maybe, for two friends who often played at being overly proper.

It was for the best, really, Gideon reminded himself. Too easy for very emotional Vesa to be pushed into situations. Too easy for a man to get silly ideas in his head. Proper was proper, and proper was best. ”Am I? Yes, yes, of course I am!”

They set off finally. A leisurely walk that would, as they always did, end before Gideon was ready. He watched their feet a moment. Eyes picking a path down the corridor. Only occasionally stealing glances at Vesa. She had lovely coloring, he noticed. Always noticed. A flush resting just under her cheeks and a smile waiting in the corner of each crystalline eye.

At the end of the first hall was a turn that led downstair. There were playful glints of daylight shimmering in through the far widow. He knew the view from that window better than the back of his own hand. A dainty garden sat just below it. You used to be able to see the orchards in the distance too. Better he didn’t think of that, though, it would make him sad. And Vesa could always tell when he was... well feeling anything really. ”Straight to it then? Dinner, I mean. Or did you want a walk about?” He did try to keep the desperate press of hope from his tone.

He failed miserably so tried to cover it with a strained laugh.

”Or not, of course... you must be hungry. Long day and all.”

”No, no!” Vesa almost laughed. A breathless, nervous giggle as she tried to soothe him. Poor, sweet Gideon. ”It was me. Jumping out the door that way.” She had known he was out here, pacing the minutes away. She should have been more careful. At least he didn’t frown as he fretted. All ducking and apologetic grins.

A moment of harried shuffling before they fell into step. Perhaps one day they would perfect the routine.

”I’m glad.” Vesa assured him with a squeeze of his arm. She couldn’t imagine what it might be like to walk to dinner alone. Quiet, probably. But Gideon seemed to take pride in his work. Available everyday at dinner time for her escort. She wouldn’t dare take a measure of it from him just to see what it was like. Vesa enjoyed it too, anyway. He was good company, which was why she’d picked him above all others for her triangle.

”A walk?” Vesa looked up, chasing the undertone of his voice with her eyes. Swept his face, looking for hints. Smiling. Why not? Dinner would keep. It always did. Were they ever on time? Vesa wasn’t sure. No one ever said they were late. Who could, now? She ruled here. And he so wanted to. ”Not that long, and its early yet.” Where, she wondered? ”Sun’s still up.”

Vesa gestured to the same window that had drawn his attention. Light aplenty. But she did not want to stroll the gardens. They didn’t call to her like many, and the ash fields of her orchards were that way. Shivering, Vesa tucked her arm under his more securely.

”We could creep by the dining room, stop in the library, and take a book out into the gazebo.” No reminders that way. It was the private reserve. Household gardens and a hedge walk. A few tall, scraggly trees like they had dotting their mountains in Askavi. The gazebo was comfortable too. Outside but not outside. ”I didn’t get a chance to read the days paper.”

Maybe she could convince him to read it to her. Sometimes it was nice just to listen. Some things were easier heard than read. Especially from a voice you trusted.

Corner’s of his mouth lifting higher Gideon walked with his head in the clouds. He felt light as a feather with the soft pressure of her fingers closing around his lanky arm. ”I’m glad that your glad,” He did his best to turn a high pitched giggle into a more masculine chuckle. It mostly worked.

He was glad though. Infinitely thankful that she welcomed his companionship. Some found his friendliness charming, others thought him annoying. And it was always a flip of a coin as to how he would be received. Though he certainly preferred the former opinion. Vesa was charming enough for the both of them, he thought.

”If it pleases you, yes. Some fresh air. Before the evenings start getting too cold.” Tempt, tempt, tempt he tried. Even the corners of his eyes smiled for the lady, curving slightly as he looked down at her upturned face. Pretty as any flower; smelling twice as sweet. Eye wandering off to the window, gleaming with his reflected merriment.

It made him giddy. The way she agreed. Hair shifting slightly as his widening smile made his ears move beneath the mass. ”Perhaps if we peek into the kitchen they’ll oblige us with a basket to go...”

Together, alone in the gazebo to read and snack at their leisure. Gideon’s face warmed pleasantly. He smiled through the blush, unashamed of the physical reaction. Not quite proper, but in lien with his personality so as not to seem uncouth. ”Ah, I haven’t read it yet today either.”

Rarely did. He got all of his current events from casual  conversation. For Vesa he would read a thousand years worth of papers in an afternoon. Especially if it meant another second in her company. If he hadn’t been with the lady he would have taken the stairs two at a time. As it were he had to force himself not to rock on his heels like a schoolboy. He really hoped they would let them take a basket to go. That she wanted to. Picnic with him, that is.

"A good point. We may get snow." Vesa loved the snow. Crisp, white. It needed nothing from you but a curious, well shaded eye. And it always left treasures behind when it melted. Things lost beneath its crust, only exposed once the days grew warm enough to heat the earth and turn snow to water. Which made everything damp and comfortable, encouraging growth.

She liked the way nature worked.

"A basket?" She laughed softly, watching the way his ears rose with his smile, hair tumbling around the slightly pink tips as they peeked out from the dark mass. Now it was baskets as well. Vesa was beginning to suspect they would never make it to dinner. She felt bad, making the others wait so long. And then to turn up half stuffed. Vesa wasn't sure it was the right thing to do. But it was hard to deny such a smile.

He was a very good friend. Warm and pleasant. Vesa still wasn't sure though. Worrying about the others as they descended the stairs. One hand on Gideon, the other on the banister, checking for new chips in the wood. She glanced up at him, trying to decide. Unsure. Should she have just demanded dinner to begin with? Walking could have been done after everyone was fed. But then it would be dark.

Maybe he was hungry.

"If we take a basket, we ought to leave word for the others to eat without us." Surely it was fine to miss one night of communal dining. She would just be sure to check in with everyone in the morning, in case they had need of her. "I wouldn't want anyone wasting away, in case the paper proves and eventful one." Just this once. Vesa let go of the banister to trail along beside him. Neither leading nor following, she existed at his side. Arguing with herself.

"Maybe they'll have hot chocolate." Vesa daydreamed, trying to pull herself out of the mental spiral. She'd decided. No use chasing other options now.

A minuscule wrinkle took up residence between Gideon’s brows. Cold weather was not something he enjoyed overmuch. Rather, being out when it was cold. Warm fireplaces and cozy blankets were lovely. Even the first few snowfalls were fine- they did please Vesa after all. But by midwinter it really was just too much. Dressing took forever when you needed six layers! Trekking through the stuff was exhausting. Plus one was forever losing things, dropped by stiff fingers and lost beneath the surface. This year, though he would tolerate all the frost and bitter temperatures nature would offer. ”I hope so. It might kill the rot.”

Gideon hadn’t meant  to spoil the nice mood. The silence wasn’t necessarily uncomfortable between them but he could tell she was thinking. He was thinking too. Brain swinging between the way her cheeks rounded when she glanced up at him that way and the fact that fungi- which rumor held the rot was- needed warmth to survive.

Probe polite and feather soft he reached for Vesa’s psyche. Worried that she was worrying. His free thumb fidgeted with his pocket flap. Fabric slightly more worn than the rest of his suit due to frequent hand tucking and nervous fiddling. She was worried. Uncertain. He had put her on the spot.

”I’m sorry. We really don’t have to.” Even if he really did want to. She had a lot of demands on her time and attention. It was his place to support her through it, not distract her from it. But it sounded like she wanted convincing to Gideon. So he tried. ”You could pop in on them while I go to the kitchen? If you change your mind I’ll come right back and we’ll see the paper after.”

Compromise. Not one he hoped to have to make, but there to ease her decision. He patted her hand where it sat on his arm. Sharing was not new to him, nor a fact of his position he grudged. He had always had to share every person he cared about. On the first floor his shoes padded lightly.

”Now that’s a promise I can make. Hot chocolate for the lady.” He gave the warm, small hand under his a soft squeeze before dropping his own back to his side. All the picture of propriety as they crossed a short corridor. Gideon tossed up a well structured sight shield so they could wander by the dining room unnoticed. It was mostly empty still; the few court members inside amicably chatting back and forth. The smell of roasting things wafted in from the kitchen. Smelled like easily packed up into a basket things, he thought.

”Wouldn’t that be lovely?” From many other women it might have been snide, or even sarcastic, but from Vesa there was only wistfulness. Eyes drawn toward the window, shrinking behind them, sunlight a thin flash of promise. Maybe snow would be their salvation this winter.

Barriers welcoming, Vesa allowed Gideon a glimpse. He was very polite about it. The touch growing familiar. As was the soft scuff of fabric against flesh. Vesa squeezed again, reaching over to soothe the fretful fingers. She shook her head, she’d already agreed. Besides he offered a better solution.

”No, I like your idea.” Gideon could fetch the food, and hot chocolate, and she could check on those who had come down for dinner. Not everyone chose to join every meal, but Vesa felt she owed those who did her attendance. The least she could do, if she was going to be late, was stop in and give her excuses.

Gideon made that difficult, however, creating a shield around them. Vesa could feel his craft surrounding her, almost as if she could reach out and touch it. No one inside the dining room stirred as they passed. Vesa laughed softly under her breath, but pulled away as well.

”You are in fine spirits this evening, Lord Loch.” She very nearly wagged a finger at him, as if he were an errant child. But Vesa resisted the urge easily enough. ”We had an agreement, I will meet you back here shortly.” They both would have to uphold their ends. Spinning a shield around herself, Vesa slipped free of his and ducked back into dining room. ”Don’t forget the hot chocolate,” she called softly over her shoulder before vanishing inside.

Not too long. Just long enough to share a few quiet laughs and offer her apologies. No one seemed bothered, the whisper soft probes she sent around the room reporting no ill will or hurt feelings. Lightened of the burden, Vesa ducked back out of the room, lingering near the kitchen door until Gideon returned, hands ready to help.

”As luck would have it, there was an extra copy of the paper in the dining room.” Which someone had kindly left near her place setting. Leaning close, Vesa inhaled appreciatively. ”Is that chocolate I smell?”

Peering behind Vesa’s barriers always felt like a gift. Even when she was, in fact, a little concerned. There was so much on her mind. Mostly deep consideration for everyone’s feelings. It was relieving. Both the touch of her hand settling his fingers as well as the agreement to his plan. It made her feel better, which in turn, made him less anxious.

”Excellent.” He tried not to be too excitable. So far Vesa had never minded. It was just bad practice! And he didn’t want to be any sort of bad for anyone ever. Especially not his queen.

Thoughts turned to hot chocolate, namely the best ratio of cocoa to milk. The kitchen witches had their own ideas. Gideon preferred it with a touch of dark chocolate bitterness instead of sugary sweetness. They would know, though, the way Vesa liked it best.

He was so caught up he hardly realized he’s glided her right by the dining room. Lost! Silly man. Grinning bashfully he let her untangle her hands from his arm. Sorry, Lady Reed. I distracted myself!” He chuckled lightly. Walking backwards a few steps he watched her slip into the dining room. Stopping at the last second, prompting him to stand a bit straighter and grin a bit wider. ”Wouldn’t dream of it lady.”

If he had to walk to Glacia for the chocolate he would do it. There was far less fuss from the kitchen than he expected. Everyone thought it was ‘quite sweet’ for him to take the lady on a little picnic. They had him all set in two minutes flat! Great steaming flask, cute wicker basket, and a lap blanket from the laundry. It still smelled strongly of soap suds and sunshine.

In the hall he nearly bumped into Vesa- again. Too eager as he rocketed out on quick heels. ”Oh! Sorry again.” He chuckled merrily, pushing back a wayward hank of hair that sat over his brow. ”That was convenient. The ladies were quite kind, and generous. There’s probably enough in here to feed the whole court.” He held the basket up by the handle. Smiling as if it were a gold medal instead of dinner.

”And yes. Plenty of chocolate.” His other hand held up a tall thermos that had been filled to the brim. ”There are brownies too.” He added in a conspiratorial whisper.

Of course he wouldn't. Vesa felt a little guilty as suspecting Gideon of anything so insidious as skipping the dinning room on purpose. Dipping her chin in acceptance of his promise, Vesa let go of her guilt and went to check on her other court members. Gideon hadn't taken offense, everything was fine. Of course, he couldn't really be harmed by her inner thoughts.

He was very good escort.

"Gideon!"
Laughing as he nearly trod on her again, basket swinging at his side. Vesa's hand stopped it from thumping against her leg in his haste. Side stepped his eager toes, and smiled as he pushed his hair from his face and help up the basket for her approval."It's alright. And the basket is lovely." She peeked under the lid quickly, before letting it fall closed and slipping up to Gideon's side.

Helpfully, Vesa took the thermos from his arm, sliding an around around his, now that it was free.

"I'll carry this then."
She hefted the thermos in her hand, eager to have it open for drinking. But they still had a library to get through, and a gazebo to find. Not too far. "You keep the basket. It has the most precious cargo," she flashed a smile at him, more than pleased with the bounty, "brownies." And her cook made the best. She wasn't sure what the woman did, but it had to be magic.

"Come on, lets go!" Infected by his own excitement, and the siren song of chocolate. Brownies to go with her hot chocolate. And of course, whatever sort of dinner the ladies of the kitchen had packed for them. She tugged at him gently, steering him toward the library doors. Inside she took them for a detour past her favorite reading chair, grasping a blanket as they went by with her fingertips. Arm suddenly full.

She laughed, letting go of him so she could arrange all the things she was suddenly carrying. Careful not to drop the paper lest it fall to pieces everywhere.

"Goodness. Who thought a last minute picnic would be so much work?" She laughed, though, opening the outer door with a bit of craft so neither of them had to worry about it. And there it was, just on the other side of a tidy path, white and glowing in the deepening twilight. "Almost there!"

Ear tips red and eyes crinkling in joy Gideon apologized again anyway. Too entranced by her using his given name to notice much else. Everything seemed a bit fuzzy at the moment. He was almost certain she had never really called him anything but Lord Loch. It sounded nice; the way she smiled around his name.

And only furthered Gideon’s staunch belief that she was wrong. Surely the most precious thing in the realm was Vesa! There were other queens, of course. Equally special in their own lovely ways. Vesa was his most precious, though just by nature of accepting and valuing his care. No mysterious bonds would make his dedication any greater than it was already.

He obliged, of course, by giving up the thermos. All the better since it made room for her to hook her arm in his again. Elbow kept by his side so that she was tucked close. Laughing he followed step for step as she led the charge to dinner. Passing through the library he slowed only a bit. Long enough to take in a deep breath. There was something grand about rooms filled with books. Smelling of ink, care worn leather bindings,  and the oils of all the people that had held them. It almost felt like the knowledge had slipped beyond the page to flavor the air.

”Oomph, let me help!” Giddy chuckled, reaching for the paper. He could tuck it on the basket and make it stay with a touch of binding spell. Save them from making a mess and having to take their meal in the library. All adjusted again he followed her out the door. Picture perfect gazebo in sight. ”It will be worth the juggling I’m sure.”

And he really, truly was.

The path was clean and easily crossed. Under the lattice work and tendrils of ivy the press of coming night was stronger. Gideon set three small wisps of witchlight free to bob around the ceiling. Enough to eat and read by without breaking the spell of semi-darkness. ”Lovely.” He said, meaning the sentiment twice as much when he turned to face Vesa. Her hair was still in perfect form, but there was a flush of color in her cheeks from their rushing through the house and garden.

Clearing his throat with a grin he set the basket down. ”Here, let’s spread the blanket out.” Before her hot chocolate started to cool.

"Clever," Vesa laughed, hair falling half over her face as she struggled with the things in her hands. The burden eased some as Gideon tucked the most troublesome bit away. Binding it neatly to the top of basket. "Is that part of escort training?" Only half joking. Curious exactly that the training entailed. Knew that at some point she would help teach young Blood males what it meant to be a proper escort.

That or just shoo them all in Gideon's direction.

"Judging from the smells, it will be well worth the trouble." Less work just to sit in the dining room and be served. But this was fun. More fun than Vesa had expected it to be. A little thrill down her spine at shirking what she viewed as a duty. A pleasurable one, but a duty still. Hands a little freer, she smoothed her hair as the walked. Craft neatly pinning it in place as Gideon set lights along the rafters.

"Beautiful." She agreed, eyes dazzled. "Yes lets!" Vesa set the thermos on the circling bench seat. The blanket unfolded in her hands, fingers curling around corners before she shook it out. Thick wool of red and black plaid. It billowed like a sail, edges tickling the witchlights. One more shake and she managed to get it mostly smooth on the ground. Kneeling, Vesa pressed it flat with her palms.

"There we go." She tucked her feet to the side and settled on the blanket. Patting it invitation before floating the thermos over. "Did they send mugs?" She asked, peeking at the basket. Otherwise they would simply have to share the cap. Vesa didn't mind. A little warming spelling on the blanket kept the chill from the wood seeping up. Vesa caught it just as her ankles began to feel the cold.

"Ah! I just smells too good." Ravenous, suddenly.

”The cleverness or the Craftwork?” Eyes shining and mirth hemming the turned up corners of his lips. A breath later he rolled a single shoulder in consideration as he answered, ”Really they just teach us Protocol, and the importance of being useful. Then you pick up little tricks to try and be most useful of all.”

At least that was how his escort training had mostly been handled. Perhaps it was different for warlord princes or temperamental males.

Humming under his breath Gideon started to unpack the tidily prepared containers as Vesa flapped the blanket into better behavior. Every flap rustling his hair. They finished at nearly the same time. He scooted over, dragging the contents of the basket along with him on the same thread of craft. Paper still waiting right where he had bound it.

He shot a sad look at the basket. Mugs! Frowning from across his shoulder Gideon’s thick brows rose in concern. ”Oh. No. I didn’t even think to ask.” He peeked in anyway, just to be sure, fingers drumming on the wicker brim. Only one napkins left inside. ”I’ll run back for some.” What had he been thinking?

Half raised from his spot on the edge of the blanket he grabbed the last container in the line up. ”I won’t tell, if you want to start with dessert.” He offered, wiggling the brownies closer. Grinning ear to ear, even while scolding himself. ”I did manage to procure forks, though, so you don’t have to wait for me. Mugs. Really, man, of all the things to forget.”

"Both!" She laughed, expression unconsciously mirroring his own. Smiling over his answer as she set things just right. Blanket, hot chocolate, good company. She glanced at Gideon, as he too put things just right. The best position to be useful. He certainly knew how to be that very well. "It sounds very competitive." A thing she could not picture him being.

At least not overtly, she amended, looking a little harder. A little deeper than the fretful frown and seeking fingers. Concern creasing his brows. He was really kind, in such an honest way. The sort openness that drew Vesa in because it didn't hide anything. Eased her worries. Reaching out, she wrapped her fingers around his arm, forestalling any rushing off to be useful.

"It's alright, really." Vesa soothed, just a touch of craft behind it, in case he didn't want to listen. "We can share the lid. That's what its for anyway." Smiling, she tugged him back onto the blanket properly. Laughing as he snagged the brownies on the way. Clever, useful man. "Lord Loch, I do insist you stay," she added on a chuckle. Darkness bless him.

"I do believe dessert is exactly where we should start." She agreed, taking the container of brownies from him. An elbow directing him to pour the hot chocolate. Vesa slid one, thick square onto each plate. Neatly spearing hers with a fork, starting, as always, at a corner. "You remember the important things. Mugs are for tables, I'm quite sure of it." A bite to soothe hungry yearning.

”It can be,” Gideon admitted with a cheerfulness that undermined the truth. There was, for a man whose ambition was escorting, no greater pride than being your favorite’s favorite. Some men could even get violent. Not those best suited for the duty, usually. Things had never seemed quite that dire to Gideon, though, and he supposed that was what made him a good escort in the end. He could love his lady, and he could share her because he wanted her to have all the love she deserved.

She hadn’t asked him all of that, though, so he only smiled as he bustled around. No need to dip into heavy talk when there was relaxing on the agenda. Which Vesa kindly reminded him was the goal of the evening. A soft touch on his wrist all it took for her to command his full attention. ”If you’re sure Lady Reed.”

He certainly didn’t mind sharing a cup. Only worried that she might have. With a laugh he tucked down on to the blanket by her side. Long legs folding on themselves so he didn’t knock any of her place setting askew. She’d placed everything just so, after all. ”Very well, very well. If my queen is pleased, I will be too.”

Nose twitching he passed the tin of sweets over. Turning to pour their shared lid full. Chocolate humidity bubbled up around them. The scent of the brownies and the hot chocolate colliding together to make Gideon’s sweet tooth ache. ”Well that’s easy, you’re the only really important thing here.” Gideon teased. Nose wrinkling with is own amusement.

Witchlight is loosely based upon the Black Jewels Series by Anne Bishop though it has been adapted and expanded by our members. All lore, characters, and writing belongs to the members. Site graphics & custom codes were created by the staff. A special thanks to Wolf & Katarina for all their help with the planning of Witchlight and the writing of the base lore.
