Laurens scoffed, insult flashing across his face. Of all things to accuse him of! This girl! Wretched kitchen witch of a girl. Laurens had never met a girl so horribly rude. Frowning, he kept on. Might as well or she’d be blaming him for that too.

”I would never!” He defended himself, lips pouting, cheeks hot. Worse because he had to touch her. Hand cradling her face, eyes critical as he looked her over. Searching for hurts. Trying to ignore everything else. ”Really!” He muttered to himself.

This was why he preferred brews. Healing from a distance. Safe from all this contact with people. Such a trial. Wearing him down, exhausting him. Confusing him too. He really wished she would quit looking at him while he was about it.

”Good, good.” Still holding on to her as the craft unwound, power seeping back into his own body. The healing down. Glad when she wiggled free of her own accord. Frowning, Laurens rubbed his hand on his thigh, letting go of the last of his craft and looking around the storeroom.

He glanced at her, Chatty Dagny, rude girl, ready and waiting with her notebook. His lips twitched before smoothing, shoulders tucked up around his ears as he got to work. Listing everything he touched. Vanishing supplies away into his cabinet. Not too much as to seem greedy, but whatever the ship needed. Marking things off his own list.

And adding those few things he needed.

”Mm?” Hard to remember he had company. The soft scratch of her writing fading into the background noise. Laurens’ head tipped back, eyes searching the ceiling. ”No. Too crowded.” He knew a lot of the men from the boat liked to go. He’d tried once and nearly suffocated from the sheer amount of bodies rather than the steam.

”Do you?” He coaxed the question out. He’d been taught manners. It was just hard. Not sure if he really wanted to know. Not sure if he didn’t. Feeling flushed and faint. So he vanished a few more things, naming them for her.

Dagny didn’t know if being shy also made you more easily upset. This Shy Laurens was certainly both, though. She was glad when the healing was finished. Standing there like a half pint of useless under his red faced glare. Not a thing in common with any healers she knew.

He even wiped his hand off on his pants leg when he was through. As if touching her had disgusted him! Tucking a stray hair back behind her ear she tried not to pout at the paper in her hands. A tall order when you had as much lip as Dagny did. Rude boy.

Making a list of her own while Laurens satisfied his was a good distraction. She could tuck herself out of the way. Let him do his rummaging for a few minutes. He named everything he took, but didn’t take everything he touched. Some of it just looked at then set aside. Boring! Very boring.

It didn’t take Dagny long to forget she was sore at his attitude. At least until he answered he question. Not even bothering to meet her eye or glance her way. Staring up at the ceiling where there wasn’t even the excuse of focusing on supplies. Another reminder that he didn’t like her. She did pout then, while she thought he wasn’t looking. Scribbled down the things he listed after his own question.

She didn’t think it was fair. Not being liked. Mostly everyone liked her at least a little. Even the cook.

”Yes. There are better places than the tourist traps. Cave springs where you can go in private. You just have to know where to look.” They all had favorites, locals and transplants that had lived in Meols long enough. Secret steam caves and hot springs that visitors didn’t flock around and infest. ”What do you do, then, when you’re here? Just sit on the ship?”

Was that what shy people did? She supposed it must have suited them, but she thought it sounded very boring- and lonely.

”Huh.” Laurens of course did not know where to look. It might be worth a walk though. He liked walking. He would have to see if there was time after he restocked the ship. Maybe he would put off talking to Valor about their bad behavior regarding kitchen witches so he could have a ramble without any scenes.

He was almost done here anyway.

”What?” Startled from his thoughts. Laurens tucked away his list in his pocket and turned to look at her. Both hands half hidden, bouncing in his pockets. ”No. Well some, but I do other things too.” Shopping and running errands. Laurens frowned. She looked sour still, he noticed belatedly. It took him that long to look at her again. Eyes wandering along the walls while he talked.

”Does your eye still hurt?” Hands slipping free. His fingers did a little dance, as if he were checking to see if all the joints still worked. He came a little closer, not really looking at her again. Watching her sort of from the corner of his eyes. ”It should have took,” he muttered to himself.

Strange on top of his rudeness. Asking what she’d said then answering anyway. At least he looked at her while sidestepping the question. Answering just the bit that suited him without any sort of real effort at making conversation. Even his moment of eye contact was brief, wandering off to stare at the walls instead. It was distracting, her own eyes turning to see what he looked at just out of habit. Frustrated Dagny sighed, eyes rolling into the back of her head. She stood straighter though, watching his hands tuck away his all important list. ”I suppose you must, or else you wouldn’t be here.”

Not that he seemed in the least bit keen. She still doubted he left the ship of his own free will.

”No, feels fine.” Dagny answered, fingertips brushing the soft span of skin between eye and cheek. Sweeping over to test the lid and tear duct too. A hint of mortification as she wondered what made him ask. ”Why? Has it bruised?!” She bounded towards him so he could see better. Half tempted to lift his chin and make him look properly, but she was short enough he could probably see fine even slumped over the way he was.

Another sigh as she remembered he didn’t like feeling crowded. Or touching her. She smoothed her braid as she nodded towards the door. ”What else is on that precious list of yours then? Kitchen things? Linens?” The ships always went through sheets faster than could possibly be healthy. She was very glad cleaning them was not one of her responsibilities.

Laurens pursed his lips, but didn’t comment. She was such a rude girl! Exasperating to the extreme, really. Of course he did things! Maybe he should have let someone else go. Or begged off the duty when it had been assigned to him. But then he had never met such a goading little witch in all his travels. Next time he was staying home, he decided.

”Oh. Well. That’s good then.” Didn’t know why she kept fussing at it if it didn’t. Laurens shook his arms out. Bonu wrists escaping his cuffs before being tucked back in. Arms quickly retraced as she rushed him. Body swaying as he tried not to scramble backward in retreat. ”No! No! It looks fine, but it is very unhygienic to be rubbing it that way.” Cries of mercy turning to a quiet scolding.

Shrugging and scrunching up on himself, Laurens looked her over. She looked just fine. Fingers fiddling with her long red braid. She had more hair than half their ship put together. He wondered if it made her neck ache, carrying it all around like that.

”No. None of that on my list. That’s Essi’s business, that.” He looked at the door. Then peeked again at the kitchen witch. Rude thing. ”I was thinking of having a walk about, after I drop all this off. Valor or Essi will be handling the marks.” Maybe he could get Anders to put it all away to he could sneak off for a bit. Laurens widen his eyes at her. She might make good company. Her mouth was sharp and embarrassing but her lips were nice. And her hair smelled pretty.

”My hands are clean.” She insisted, as if that made it alright. Turning to pout as he fussed. There were plenty of males that did plenty of fussing around court. But Dagny was rarely the object of their focus. Actually never. That wasn’t important though.

She didn’t like it.

Didn’t like the way he cringed away either. Strange, rude boy. Couldn’t look at her to have a conversation but watched the path of her fingers through her hair. All furtive and… well… shy. Maybe she’d forgive him again. He couldn’t very well help it if was odd, could he? No one wanted to feel that way.

”Wouldn’t one list have done? Silly to send several people to the same place just because they need different supplies.” She commented. Not really sure how such things worked. Some hearth witches liked to organize and order things. Supply ships was the joy of their days. But Chatty Dagny preferred to pour her energy into people. Making them comfortable, seeing that things were just the way they liked them. Cleaning a room and leaving no trace she had been there at all except for righted books and clean laundry.

That was what bothered her so much about this fellow. She made him so intolerable uncomfortable! ”Oh? Prince Valor?” Dagny asked, fingers lacing behind her back as she started to bob from heel to toe. Cheeks turning just a bit pinker at the thought. If he came so late in the afternoon he would certainly be invited to dinner. ”I wonder if he’ll stay in the house tonight.” She said aloud. Then gave a slow look around them, suddenly aware of how awkward it was to be standing around in a supply closet with a man she didn’t know.

”Are you going to go sightseeing? Or like a walk just to take the air?” There were a dozen tourist traps in the city but there were a few real places worth seeing too. Like the rainbow cave, filled with hanging crystals that would cast colorful arcs of light with just a touch of witchlight. ”Maybe you’ll find one of those hot springs I was telling you about. The private ones.” She offered him a little smile. Then took a long hard look at the still closed door.
