Arkyn Wildling

The Basics

Full Name: Arkyn Wildling
Age: 36
Gender/Pronouns: Male he/him

Ethnicity: Glacian
Birthplace: Wilds of Hrausla, Glacia
Current Location: Meols, Glacia
Profession: Sjef of Meols

Caste: Warlord Prince
Birthright Jewel: Yellow (CUT 74)
Offering Jewel: Summer Sky (CUT 52)

Face Claim: Enrico Ravenna

The Body

Height: 6'0
Body Type: Fit
Hair Color: Brown
Eye Color: Brown

Appearance:
Despite his dusky complexion there is nothing about Arkyn that suggests he is warm. Maybe the dark waves of his hair. But the dark glower of his eyes is likely to keep anyone from trying to find out. Set in a hard jawed face, with hovering brows to sit over them. Piercing and as deep as the Abyss.

He is an average man, with average features. His bloodline mixed with that of the indenginous people. Keeping him from fitting the typical blonde and fair stereotype of Glacia. He is not obnoxiously tall, nor short enough to make his fit figure look stocky. A subtle covering of facial hair. Full lips that rarely turn up into a grin.

To be honest, he looks annoyed. Which is rarely far from the truth.

The Mind

Craft Strengths: 15pts
Physical Enhancement
Heating & Cooling Spells
Psychic Communication
Craft Weaknesses: Shield Craft

Personal Strengths: Committed, prudent, reasonable, fair-minded
Personal Weaknesses: Stern, meticulously lawful, conservative/reactionary

Personality:
Arkyn liked things just the way they were. He is not very pleased with the current upheaval in Meols Court. He has always been a man hard pressed towards change. And the abruptness of this major rearrangement has left him rather bitter.

Not that he wasn’t a bit resentful before they flung a child where a perfectly good queen had stood.

From his earliest years he was accurately labeled the moody sort of warlord prince. Forced to grow up young. Hurt by abandonment. Desperate to provide food and shelter for his sister and self. Now he has to deal with her teenage swings of mood and broodiness. It just leaves a man feeling a bit at a loss. Makes the changes and challenges harder to stand.

That’s not to say Arkyn isn’t the perfect man for his job, though! No one is more impartial. More suited to decided guilty from innocent then dealing effective but unbiased punishment. He is, himself, extremely judicious and adherent to the laws of the land. Even when he disagrees with them. Arkyn believes in the power of the Commonwealth’s judicial system. Believes in the Sjef Assembly, too. He will press that belief and lawfulness on everyone around him, as well. Even more strict is his personal morale code. He wants the best for Meols. And he isn’t convinced it’s happening.

He can’t shrug off the cowl of the warlord prince, or sjefdom, though. All those protective instincts broadened to encompass Meols as a whole. His commitment to the city beyond anything- even his own happiness or life.

The Backstory

Family:
  • Tarkik | Relation | Purple Dusk to Sapphire Warlord Prince - deceased
  • Jorunn | Relation | Tiger Eye to Summer-sky Witch - deceased
  • Tine | Sister Opal Birthright Healer

History:
Orphaned and alone Jorunn came to the nomads’ village in the fall. A wheat haired woman with eyes as innocent as a caribou’s intent gaze. Half frozen when she fell through the ice of a braided river. The shepherd, Tarkik, Prince of his People, found her before true death had settled in her bones. With the heat of his own body he brought her back to the living. Took her Virgin Night as reward. Then kept her for his wife.

In the next season their son was born. Called Tarkik Smaller by his father, the boy grew too fast. Toddling before he was a year old. Always into trouble. Stealing milk buckets and pulling the girls’ hair. Begging the chieftess for chocolate. His father took the stick to his hide but it never made much improvement. They knew, long before his Birthright at seven, that the boy was a warlord prince.

There was an air of disappointment. Growing disinterest from Tarkik the Father. No use forming attachments to a boy that would freeze to death before he became a man. The yellow was not enough. Would never be enough to survive a life on the plains. This bred contention between Tarkik and Jorunn. Jewels were Jewels! Why should her boy die in the cold when there were plenty of places in the world for him to be safe?

She wanted to take him away. Back to Fyrkat where she was born. They would never accept Tarkik and his wildness there. Nor would he be happy away from his tribe. With another child born- a girl this time- they made a tentative truce. Stuck in a stalemate. And the boy did not freeze. His mother’s warmth bundled up to keep him warm.

In fact, it was his father that died. Shredded, along with two of his bulls by a dark jeweled Arcerian. Tarkik Smaller, was given a new name then. A name of his mother’s people. As was his infant sister. As Arkyn and Tine they entered the city of Fyrkat when he was twelve years old. Nearly a man to the Nukti people, but still a child to the Glacians.

It wasn’t fair, he thought. Being forced into a place that didn’t want him. But the tribe had not wanted him either. He was not both as his mother insisted. He was accepted by neither! Not many months after he arrived, they sent him away again. Off to Meols, where Warlord Princes were in short supply. And his lighter jewel would not be drained daily for basic survival.

There he did a little better. They traded with the Nukti. Were less suspicious of his indigenous heritage. He learned Protocol at the knee of an older Queen. A kind woman he grew to love as another mother. A better one, even, because she knew the ways to soothe his temper. At sixteen he heard word that his mother had died. The details were unknown, and he could not leave to go find out. His training had intensified. Placed on a skyship and taught to navigate the constellations. Second in importance only to the captain. The highest position he could ever hope to hold. He would never have jewels dark enough to captain a ship on his own.

Tine came to live under his care after their mother died. She was only five years old. A teary eyed little child that wanted parenting he didn’t know how to give. The community helped as best they could, but before a year was done so was Arkyn’s hope to remain in the sky squadron. He didn’t resent Tine for needing him home. But he never really forgave fate for taking his preferred career away.

Other work was found. Escorting and supervising over a warehouse. Menial work. He kept at it. Proved his commitment to Meols. Slowly. Over the course of years. At twenty two he made his Offering. Coming away with the Summer-sky. A wholesome Jewel, he thought. He grew into its use quickly. And grew handsome too. Or so they said. A preferred escort among the girls of the lower circles.

They enjoyed plying him with their flirting. He was good at flirting back. Called Wildling because he was born outside of a city, half native and mysteriously close to the Darkness. A good, solid boy for them to try their petting on. To test their mettle and have first kisses with.

But still never enough for the serious work. Not a Virgin Night to his name. No matter how many tattoos he etched into his skin to prove his worth and loyalty.

The reward was years away. Long, toiling years of hard work. Raising a rambunctious sister that resented his stiff love for the law. Keeping her out of trouble when she only wanted a bit of fun. Playing nice to stuck up ladies just to keep food on the table and a roof over their heads. He just wanted to be good enough! Not to struggle for things that were outside of his control like Jewels and heritage.

Finally, at 34 it happened. In a sad way, since Arkyn was fairly certain he would never be allowed to enjoy anything wholly. The queen’s consort died of old age. She was not quite ready to step aside. Men applied, Arkyn first in line. And by some miracle she chose him from all the rest. First Escort!

But it was short lived. Two years passed in the blink of an eye and he was pulled aside for a gentle talk. The First Escort position would go to someone else. A younger man. A child! Because the queen was stepping down to allow a child in her place too!

The wheel of fate had turned on him again. From top to bottom. Queen replaced! Title taken! Little sister more wild than ever as she bucked to make her Offering! Thankfully the closing of one door opened another. In the weeks after stepping down he found himself right back at court. Elected as Sjef by his friends and city as a whole. He cried over it in private. Finally an upswing in his life. The change was more than he had ever hopped for. In a time when Arkyn could feel the strands of his life slipping through is fingers. Still it isn’t really fair. He barely had a moment to do any of the things he wanted to do. And now there are children to oversee and a city looking at him to ease the transition.

He isn’t ready. But he’s beaten every expectation so far. He’ll manage this one too.
