Reed

The Basics

Full Name: Reed
Age: 24
Gender/Pronouns: Buck, he/him

Ethnicity: Cervini
Birthplace: DaM
Current Location: DaM
Profession: Refugee and brother

Caste: Healer Prince
Birthright Jewel: Red (31)
Offering Jewel: Gray (47)

Face Claim: Daniel Sharman

The Body

Height: 6'2, 7
Body Type: Muscled
Hair Color: Brown
Eye Color: Brown

Appearance:
Sharp angles and lanky planes of boyhood have turned into strong muscles and cutting edges against the tooth and claw of the wolfmen. Fit by necessity, Reed reflects his history. Skin a scar patchwork from handling the wounds of others before his own, spine straight and proud with his jewels, hands calloused by hours of training and battle with spear and sword and bow. Only his face betrays the image of a hardened warrior, wide brown eyes and a jaw that rarely requires the blade to remain trim. The little scruff he has doesn't stay long.

Gifted, or cursed, with broader antlers than his brother, Reed presents an intimidating silhouette. A wide spread, sweeping back and out, four tines splitting off like skeletal fingers. Another tine strikes forward, mid-beam, two smaller tines sprouting from the beam base. Kept sharp, just as much a weapon as his hands, as his Craft, Reed finds his second greatest enemy is low hanging branches.

The Mind

Craft Strengths: 15pts +5

Craft Brews
Healing Webs
Diagnostic Sight
Physical Enhancement
Craft Weaknesses: Masking, aural shields.

Personality:
Named for the plants at the location of his birth, Reed is particularly unyielding in his beliefs. Only a year behind his brother, the war of their people did not teach him to smile, to seek happiness and peace. Perhaps part of his caste, perhaps grown from the herd's inability to grow roots, Reed is fiercely protective and possessive of what is his, and deeply suspicious of anything offered that appears to be given freely. He has to know all the attached strings and to whose hands they lead, and if the gains to not outweigh the cost he won't take any of it. Stubborn to a fault, whatever tender core might exist in Reed is one that requires digging and perseverance to get to.

But partner to that unwillingness to bend is a bone deep fear, a nightmare terror that drives him to train until exhaustion, a guilt that sinks him low. Every death weighs on him as a personal failure, even if he had no hand in attempting to save the deceased. Fury rides those waves of shame, making him quick to lash out when upset. Traps upon traps litter his memory, and it's easier for him to be brisk and rude and wary than to bother explaining to someone why they've upset him. Better that they don't get close enough to do it in the first place.

The Backstory

Family:
  • Root | Father | Purple Dusk to Green Caste- deceased
  • Pride | Mother | White to Tiger Eye witch- deceased
  • Tempest | Brother | Sapphire to Gray Warlord Priest
  • Allen | Brother | Summer-sky to Opal healer- deceased

History:
Family on the run, it was easier to bare Reed in the river than beside it, hoping to lose their trail across the water. On bitter, ugly days, Reed wonders if they hoped him stillborn, and that the river had taken him away. Another son, after all, another mouth to feed that would do nothing to further them.

But he had lived, squalling until his mouth had been covered, unaware of their danger. More a liability in those days than not. Those years, at least, are a blur to him. His memory starts the same as a new fawn, on his feet, moving through the brush, learning to be as quiet as a shadow, as fast as a bird. Impermanence meant safety, preservation. Impermanence draped itself over their herd as shadows below tired, paranoid eyes, as antlers sharpened to points, daggers strapped to wrists and spears always within arms reach.

At first it was easier to bend, like his namesake, and accept the reasons for it. Young enough not to question the constant movement, the disappearances, the frantic press of a knife into his palm, father's fingers curling around his, the last vestiges of sunlight falling away. But the longer they ran, the thinner their numbers, the more he asked why? Why not turn and fight, and root them out? Why be on the defensive, constantly? Why be so willing to relinquish a place, any place, that one could call home?

The lake herd is a blessing and a curse. All of Reed's desires flourishing like a perfect dream, comfort and safety offered with open hands. All at once he longs for it and hates it, hates that his herd necessitates the charity in the first place. Hates more that they are all so eager to integrate. Tempest takes his Birthright, starts his caste training, and finds a doe to chase, leaving Reed alone. He tries to play with the other children, tries to make friends, but finds himself too different. Easier to keep to his older cousins that linger at the edges, easier to sit and practice something useful than to be mooning over some doe.

The respite only lasts so long. Three years, and their saviors, their 'friends', turn them away. Long enough for Reed to start to think their plight over, that they could stay. He takes his Birthright two days before they are removed, digging deep beneath the roots of an ancient tree, burrowing down until the mud feels like it pools in his lungs. The Red he fists in his hand is earth-warm, blood warm. Right.

Three years is just long enough to touch Healing Craft. This is what he tells himself as they pack and leave. More than enough time to learn the basics. The rest will come through practical application, through healing cuts and bruises and setting bones. Thrust into a position of importance too early, side by side with his brother. Anger fuels his Red, his Red fuels his anger. He and Tempest, towering in strength, reduced to running, and for what? No matter the action or inaction, their family shrank. Better to face their hunters head on than wait in the twilight to find out who was taken in the night.

Then it's their mother, taken among his namesake. Just his Aunt left, and cousins, father, family that Reed feels like clinging to and cleaving from all at once, tired of the pain. They sleep outside the shield and he loses himself in the sounds of snapping bones and snarling. Praying for a lucky blow to end it even as he drives dagger and spear head and tine into furry hide. But the sun rises again, light running across corpses, and none of them his. Vindictive satisfaction at the proof of their power. He argues against them splitting, the fractures in their blood already running deep, but they part anyway. Reed stays with his brother, determined to hold onto the one constant of his life, and in the quiet finds his Gray. When they come back together and the herd is smaller he says nothing. There's nothing to say.

So they keep moving, picking off and being picked off, one by one. His Aunt passes, leaving a babe in her stead, another boy, the end of their line. The death of them writ in the makeup of the herd as much as in the shadows that stalked them.
