Profession: Weaver, hunter, sometimes raider

The Body

Height: 6'0
Body Type: Sporty
Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: Umber

Appearance:
Sweet faced, Tariq, the nurses would croon. With big eyes and a mess of hair. Not much has changed from those early compliments, either. He is still soft featured rather than hard. Hair a mass of unruly waves that are softer to the touch than expected. The coloring is of a dark brunette that lightens by a few shades at the ends from sun bleaching. It has been some years since last he had it cut. This style choice is for the singular effect it has on women, most of whom find the length and slightly uncommon texture attractive. His eyes are rather standard for a man of Paon, being a darker shade of brown.

In body Tariq is what most of his countrymen envision as ideal. Tall without being lanky. Form solid and sporting, providing a silhouette many begrudge him. Like the warriors carved onto ancient temples, he is an imposing figure. He rarely puts that figure into any sort of a hurry, however. Stride leisurely he has a rather lazy countenance. One of bad posture at the very least. He slouches in his seat and often lets his shoulders slump regardless of his position. It would take great need or serious circumstance to put him in any sort of a rush. A pretty figure passing by could easily make him more alert, of course. His style of dress is also reflective of his hedonistic tendencies. Soft, airy, many times even sheer fabrics make up his wardrobe. Tariq has an amusing, eccentric taste in fashion. Combining the odds and ends of cultures across both realms in his everyday wardrobe.

The Mind

Craft Strengths: 15pts

Tangled Webs
Psychic Wounding
Physical Shields
Chalice Healing
Weapon Empowerment
Craft Weaknesses: who let me leave this blank? For shame!

Um, he sucks at anything hearthy, like scent cleansing especially. Wears his heart on his sleeve so bad at psychic masking too.

Personal Strengths:
  • clever
  • emotionally astute: can easily read other peoples' moods
  • observant
  • polymath: knowledgeable in a broad range of subjects including but not limited to astronomy, geography, effective teaching, culture, and economics.
  • poised/collected: not prone to panic or stress even in high pressure situations; clear minded; calm
Personal Weaknesses:
  • emotionally dependent: needing the affection, praise, or approval of others (especially women) to feel happy.
  • vulnerable: due to his emotional dependency; easily offended
  • hedonistic: willing to go to great lengths to indulge himself; pleasure seeker; avoids unpleasant situations, circumstances, and people
  • impatient
  • meddling/intrusive: involves himself with people and situations that do not need to invovle him; i.e. he has a tendency to argue for the education of young girls, taking it so far as to have verbal disagreements with the parents.
  • sarcastic
  • overprotective

Personality:
After an early life filled with personal suffering Tariq is a man that has little patience for anything displeasing. That is not to say he is prone to complaining, fits, or violence, the exact opposite is true. A more amicable and understanding man is rarely found. But he does avoid unpleasant tasks and situations at all costs, possibly even his friendship. Asking him to do a thing he has declined before will quickly lead him to stop seeking your company.

His tastes and desires are simple but he caters to them without concern or question. He is not likely to deny himself any thing so long as it does not cause grief for others. Some think poorly of him for the self indulgence, mistaking it for selfishness. Tariq would never trade the happiness of others to satisfy himself. He is a teacher at heart, he wants to see others find joy and achieve enlightenment in their lives. In fact he prefers to leave others satisfied whenever possible. He is not a man indifferent to the feelings of others. Spreading the pleasure he takes from life is just as important to him as receiving it.

While it is true sex is often the form pleasure takes for Tariq it is far from the only way. He is what most would call a reflective soul having a great belief that people need quiet times to restore inner calm. He meditates daily and instructs his pupils that it is the best way to mentally review their days lesson. It is a time to consider all of the things that make life worth living, the things that provide pleasure in life. Like good foodstuff, beautiful scenery, the wonder found in children, and the multifaceted sensual nature of women.

It does not take long in his acquaintance to see that he has a particular interest in the opposite sex. An interest that varies both wildly and strangely depending on their age and beauty. His need to be accepted, appreciated, and attractive to women is a dominant factor in his person. Not just women that he desires sexually, but all women. He shows the greatest respect for elderly women treating even complete strangers as if they were his own mother. He secretly yearns for them to say they wish he were their son. In women his own age or close to, he is a charmer, always courteous but carefully tempting. He longs for more than just lust, but has no luck finding true lasting affection. Even little girls fall under his notice. Perhaps because they are the easiest to win over and most free with their affection Tariq finds himself often taking up the role of brother and protector. He has put himself in dangerous situations interacting with queenlings and slave girls. Making sure they are as educated as everyone else on the islands.

Having traveled great deal in his raiding days Tariq has been exposed to many peoples, traditions, and cultures, He has become an astute and clever individual. He is a fast learner able to draw accurate conclusions about people based on very little evidence. His brightness also makes him inclined to a sharp wit and intense sarcasm that is easily misunderstood or lost in his mental translations. This can occasionally lead to major problems.

In short Tariq is a charming young pacifist that looks out for the well being of others, but lives for his own pleasure.

The Backstory

Family:
  • Grégoire Dupuy | Father | Purple Dusk to Sapphire Warlord
  • Jacinthe Lamare | Mother | Purple Dusk to Green Queen
  • Isidore Nazaire | Half-Brother | Sapphire to Ebon-Gray Warlord Prince
  • Maylis Lamare | Aunt | Opal to Sapphire Black Widow

History:
mentions of rape and violence

Mistake, they called him, the lean baby born from a queen’s wicked womb. Hidden for months just so he could taste life, mother knowing her own would be the price. And not if they would allow him to survive beyond her punishment. As predicted they all blamed her for the transgression. A lifetime of training to let the warlord from Thure do as he pleased- to let all the men that needed petting do as they pleased with her body- then punished for the inevitable consequences. She should have taken her brews more devoutly, or rejected the thing from her body once she knew the healer’s mixes had failed. But she had not. She bore a son for the raider captain, who had come in search of her sister nine months before. A newborn at the center of that meeting too. A different son, this one a legitimate heir whose power was destined for darkness the tangled web could not even see. Sapphire, it guaranteed, without saying if that were the birthright or the offering.

There were webs for this one too.Though the mother would never see them, nor her child. Expelled from her womb then immediately handed off to his aunt. The mother dragged from birthing bed to whipping post. At the time the High Priestess of Corlay had a lot to prove to their Mother Priestess. So death at the lash was the only plausible outcome. Such was the story Tariq would be told when asked why he had no mother. A terrifying and guilt inducing beginning to a life that would not get much brighter.

She was cruel, his aunt. Disgusted to have the shame of her sister’s caste extended indefinitely. But she was clever. Even before her webs predicted deep and dark glory for the boy, she saw the value in the baby of a wealthy slavemaster. So he was cared after if not cared for. Kept alive, raised among the hovel of slave children. Not aware for many years that he was not actually one of them. At six his aunt brought him into the main house. Had him bathed, shaved the lice from his head and dressed him in a clean tunic. At the temple she was not disappointed. No one was ever disappointed by Maylis Lamare’s webs.

The same would be true of the boy, who she named Dupuy in spite of his father. Who sent money but never visited. Not a single time. The slaves that raised him, however, were landen from Hayll. Tariq was the name they used, and the one he would always prefer. Once he received his Green birthright he was moved permanently into his aunt’s house. Tutored daily, on a strict and difficult regimen. Black Widow skills practiced and pounded into his little head until he was not sure if the caste was natural or learned. It must have been the former, though, because by his fourteenth birthday he had taken ill for a month while a shining white tooth worked through his left index finger for the very first time.

That made the combat training he was forced through twice as dangerous for his sparring partners. Days were long and miserable. His childhood rife with burning muscles and anxiety. Had he remembered everything from the previous lesson? There would be pain if he had not. Pain and extra work when he was almost always already tired. Power controlled through careful feeding and his aunt’s Sapphire. But he made time for small happinesses. Took meat to the slave women that had seen him through infancy. Taught their children to read and write. How to calculate marks so that the marketmen could no longer short them.

There was pain for that too. Pain and warnings and more pain. So he turned his passion to teaching the less fortunate into a secret game. Freetime growing a his manhood neared. Both his spears blooded within in a week of one another. The first between his legs as he was begged into a Virgin Night. After that he was taken on his first raid. Across the vicious seas to the mainland, where he was made to be vicious too. It was the worst moment of his life. A start contrast to the pleasure he had found in guiding a girl to womanhood.

In the fall after he made his Offering. Left his aunt’s home for good, and met his brother for the first time. He was an intimidating creature, Isidore Nazaire. But he was amused and infatuated with Tariq. Afterward he would visit by surprise at least once a month. No matter where Tariq went. Because Tariq travelled a lot. Sometime they made him go back to the mainland on raids. Pressured into service by societal expectation. Or the need of coin. His real passion was still educating others, however. So he went out of his way to educate himself. Turning into a scholar that lurked the libraries of every temple on the islands. Learning so that he could teach them.

That was how they met. Tariq and Kashi. She wanted to learn too. And in that way of young men faced with pretty women, he taught her more than he intended. First to trust, by taking her into his bed. Then to steel herself against mistrust. Breaking her heart by trying to do a good thing. While she was born of Paon blood, Kashi was a slave. One with a family arrangement as turbulent as his own. When they sold her, Tariq followed, hoping to buy her from her new owner. To make her a free woman. He sold everything he had, but it was not enough. Kashi was clever, obedient, and beautiful. A valuable slave. Worth more than he could give. But the priestess who had bought her took pity on the man. Gave him a price that he could easily settle. Right between her thighs. Which was where Kashi caught him. His joy in seeing her shattered by the look in her eyes.

And his own heart broken as he found her love for him lessened while their connection grew. Not by her choice, he knew, but by some sick twist of fate. Another baby that stuck through the brews. This one, he was determined, would find a different fate. Would find itself surrounded by love, no matter what it took. If he had to beg on hands and knees at Kashi’s skirts for the rest of his life then that was what he would do. As soon as he found them another room… unless the innkeep of their current one got to him first.
