Ethnicity: Moidyn Varrey
Birthplace: Secret Cove
Current Location: Rosnay, Paon
Profession: Bookkeeper, sometimes pearl diver, regular cannibal

The Body

Height: 5'9"
Body Type: Fit
Hair Color: Brown
Eye Color: Blue

Appearance:
Tan, dark haired, fit from work on the shore, and hunting, and shifting. A crooked jaw, a soft face framed by beard and mustache, altering the look of him into someone harder, firmer. Aramis looks personable, friendly. His long, loose hair gives him an air of freedom, his stature and build command attention. Solid is a good word to describe him. Sturdy. Unlikely to be moved.

He dresses cleanly, plainly, rarely in patterns. Hair often tied back, facial hair trimmed, neat, considering the relative unkempt attitude the climate of his home can inspire. A relatively forgettable man, although if a stranger were to bump into him on the street he might be considered friendly.

But there's something off in him. He has impenetrable eyes, flat, like the crocodiles that haunt the water. A mouth prone to small movements, no wide grins or pouts. Aramis' face is one accustomed to subtlety, his eyes and hands more expressive than his lips. He speaks levelly although not monotonously. His sole adornments are a necklace with his jewel setting, never removed, glasses for his bookkeeping, and ear cuffs.

The Mind

Edge Walker
Craft Weaknesses: Witchlight, witchfire, cushioning spells

Personality:
Order and hunger. Hunger and desire. Desire and order. These things, in their myriad combinations, shape Aramis. One influences the handling of all, in a grand circle of continuity.

Order - in that Aramis is eminently particular about the things he keeps track of, the things that are his. A place for everything and everything in its place, including, in some instances, people. To a degree, this extends to his brother. Emile is his first, brother before there were lovers, brother before there were outsiders. If there's one person who Aramis would drop everything for, it's Emile. At the same time, he's aware of their boundaries, their walls and rhythms and patterns. He contents himself with being a constant, rather than a blanket, and knows he's better suited to letting Emile run amok than to attempting to reign him in.

Desire - to do as he pleases, when he pleases, where he pleases. It helps that his exactitude, his peculiarities, make it unlikely that he will ever situate himself within the cross-hairs of someone who would find his hobbies... unseemly. Aramis knows he's different, and likes to keep that to himself. For the public, he's mild, polite, bookish to a degree. Distant, maybe a little awkward, a little lost in the clouds, but pleasant. Neighborly, even. He knows he scares people, otherwise, and it's a terrible hassle, handling that.

Hunger - in a more than just physical sense. His greatest weakness is his fondest outlet. People fascinate him, particularly how they are beneath the surface, and not the mask they put on outside their house. Unfortunate circumstances have let Aramis feed himself on their flaws, and now his palate demands peculiar cravings.

There is no part of Aramis that considers his differences wrong in any way. His habits, his passions, his blanket apathy and generalized distaste for people is just who he is. If he happens to have particular trouble connecting with people on an emotional level, it's not unfair to reason that all people struggle with it to some degree. There's no true comparative metric for it. He is strong after all, powerful. His mandates over his own actions matter more than the perception of others.

A thread of Emile's anger lives in Aramis, a dangerous thread. Rare to burn hot, to lash out immediately. Instead he sits. Waits. Holds onto whatever slight is deemed enough to warrant retaliation. As infrequent as Aramis' anger is to rile, it is almost always the people who it is directed at that end up in his cold box.

The Backstory

Family:
  • Name | Mother | Jewel to Jewel Caste
  • Name | Father | Jewel to Jewel Caste
  • Emile | Brother | Jewel to Jewel Warlord Prince
  • Name | Sister | Jewel to Jewel Caste

History:
The coast, their inlet, the trees. Aramis grew up knowing little else, a world populated by more animals than people. Momma and sister, for a long time. Sometimes a man, but rarely the same one, and his sister kept him from them. Told him that the people their Momma met were different, not like them, with their two skins and their longer lives.

He spent much of his time alone, those years where his sister and his mother were the supports of his life. Wandering the trees and the coast, sometimes taking to the beach with his sister to see her change, to know their secret. But Aramis' secret was different, one kept even from his family - animals, mostly, birds and small ground game. Practice traps snapping around little necks, kills by other animals found and studied. Occupying him while his mother and his sister saw to the men.

Sometimes those men would come and their mother would send only him away, and when at last he was fetched the man would be gone and their Mother would be haunted, tired, and his sister would cook and sooth and sing.

It wasn't until later that he found out what became of them. Maybe it would have been more concerning if he'd felt like it was wrong, but he didn't. There was nothing wrong with survival. The men who came to his mother and sister were non-entities to him, existences without meaning.

His family had meaning. Consequence. They were his, a concept that flowered in him young and rooted deeply, if selectively. His mother, his sister, and later, his brother. People belonging to him, who were part of him, and he them.

It was his sister who drew him through his first shift, and saw him descend to find his Birthright. Summer-sky, bright and warm in his hands, wedged deep in the coral. Bloody hands presented the jewel to his sister, a spark in him catching on tinder he hadn't known was there. She saw him through his shift, too, their mother on the beach beside them, a young Emile at her side. Their second skin was something he found fascinating at the same time that he was wary of it, disliking the change in perception, the lack of hands.

Hands that learned quickly to cut and carve, turning animals in his simple traps into food from more complex ones. Easy to step up into a provider roll when so much of it allowed for him to follow his whims, hunting, tracking, refining Craft skills and senses. He grew into an equilibrium of control, not entirely content with their existence but not motivated enough to change it.

The passing of their mother was the first real rock to the boat of Aramis' life. Used to his own shallow, limited understanding of his emotions, best at mirroring the extremes, her loss shook him. Made the roots of his covetous nature dig deeper, farther. Drove him, perhaps, to take her body as they had taken the men's bodies. Their sister didn't speak out against it, and when she passed he took her body too.

Her baby was a matter Aramis couldn't deal with himself, too unmoored by the realization of how empty his future would be. Almost too young to care for Emile, certainly too young to care for a babe, Aramis stole away, left the baby squalling at the edge of the first property he deemed far enough from their home.

A better sibling might have felt some remorse about it. Aramis retreated into the shadows of the trees without a backward glance.

After that he settled like a stone. Navigated growing up and doing his part to raise Emile in some semblance of how their mother and sister raised him, feeding his own lack of restraint as they grew. Drawing satisfaction from the fall of people before him. Sometimes bought, other times lost against their coast, Aramis found in other people a type of fulfillment, if only for a moment. An emptiness, almost, a hollow thing in his chest that burned as red as Emile's Offering. They grew too, in the way two brothers left majoritively isolated, edges dragging against each other until their dynamic simply was. Neither leader nor leaderless, Aramis bent around Emile, and Emile around him. When he descended for his Green and came up scored and bloody, it was Emile that watched the shore. And when Emile brought up his Red, Aramis was there to greet him.

And then there was the women.

Pella, brought in on the edges of the storm, lightning in her like that that danced across the water. She had made Emile happy to have, and it had been less than nothing for Aramis to bend to accommodate her presence as well, even when she put him between Emile and herself with biting words. More, after, some from situations that were worse and better and between. Existences, people, who his mind categorized as 'important to Emile', with a slim number that was actually important to him.

Where Emile moved into fishing and pearl diving, Aramis turned toward the profitability of his brother's work, selling or bartering his hauls to make them the coin that brought in the food that everyone else ate. It, and the maintenance of their home and their collection, occupied him, and he learned to balance his desires against his duties.
