Solene Faucheux

The Basics

Full Name: Solene Faucheux
Age: 105
Gender/Pronouns: She/her/hers

Ethnicity: Moidyn Varrey
Birthplace: Paon
Current Location: Paon
Profession: healerwife

Caste: healer
Birthright Jewel: Yellow (6)
Offering Jewel: Tiger Eye (84)

Face Claim: Summer Bishil

The Body

Height: 5'3"
Body Type: Slim
Hair Color: Brown
Eye Color: Brown

Appearance:
Dark hair kept wavy by the moisture of the island, skin warmed and sometimes sunburned in the summer. Solene is pretty, with expressive eyebrows and a soft mouth. Strong jaw, warm eyes, round nose. Cheekbones that support infrequent blushes. Petite, short, lithe arms and small bones. Solene is a slip of thing, a person kept soft by masters with machinations on her future. Her only edges are those gained from learning to heal, light callouses on her hands. She favors pale colored clothes within the permissible fashions of her masters, light on embroidery and embellishment. If she could, she'd lean toward brighter colors, jewelry and complex embroidery. As it is, she yearns, and smiles without heart.

As a seal she's light and fast, more pale than not, speckled grey like an egg. Big teeth to make up for the words she can't speak. Power in the water where on land she has little.

The Mind

Craft Strengths: 15pts +5 point bundle

Diagnostic Sight
Healing Webs
Craft Healing
Telekinetic Surgery
Swift Shifter
Craft Weaknesses: heating and cooling spells, vermin warding

Personality:
Personable, in the way slaves are taught to be. If Solene had been born anywhere else her warmth might have had more of an edge, her sturdiness a more of a bite. As it is, she shows her irritation in little ways, politic smiles with an edge of pique, tone civil if aggrieved. She's skilled in using hands and shoulders and chin to communicate her frustration. She's majoritively genial, a little flirty. Not terribly witty but not dumb, Solene seeks to navigate her position with the least amount of resistance. When there are things she wants that she thinks are reasonably within her ability to get, she goes for them, and isn't against using a little manipulation to do so. Only a dreamer in the manner of many long lived slaves, Solene likes more the notion of making her ideas reality. She doesn't dream fancifully, of perfection, or tries not too -- she dreams of colored garments and a home that is hers.

Sol isn't used to people looking at her without seeing 'slave' first, and expects her interactions to be framed this way. She doesn't like her lot, and wants very desperately to leave Paon for a place where she is truly free. As it is now, with the recent separation from her mother, her eyes are frequently turned toward the horizon. Even the mainland must have some place for her.

The Backstory

Family:
  • Celie, formerly Shannon | Mother | White to Rose witch
  • Unknown | Father | Jewel to Jewel Caste
  • Claude Faucheux| Master | Tiger-eye to Purple Dusk Warlord

History:
Celie had come to the island pregnant, the spoils of a raid. She had been Shannon then, before her master had chosen a new name for her. It hadn't taken long for Andre Faucheux to realize that the newly named Celie would outlive him, as her child would, although he remained ignorant to Celie's second nature. She'd been a witch, and slave-light, and those things had only meant a more fitting investment for his family. If he had known of her abilities he might not have allowed her to stay at his seaside residence. He might not have allowed her to live at all.

But Celie stayed, and Solene was born to a life of servitude and secrets.

Kept at her mother's side rather than sold, Solene was taught at her hip the ways the house and, quietly, the ways of their people. Celie had made herself the companion of her master earl on, aware that he was the type of man who would give greater freedoms to a slave held close. So she was allowed time unsupervised with her daughter, in the house and on the beach, and it was during these stolen hours that she taught her about their second skin.

Stories of her rookery furnished Solene's ideas about the mainland, framed it against the edicts of the island. She knew she was different than the other children, knew that they were separate, slave. It was not so hard then, before she came into her birthright and her second skin, to image that this was just another distinction between her and them.

She found her birthright at eleven, satisfyingly light for her masters even if her mother regretted it. She blamed herself for her daughter's limited reach, even if Solene never desired anything darker. She had a practical mind, even then, and couldn't imagine how something darker would impact her position in the house. At her mother's side. At last, with her jewel, Solene began spending the time with her mother being taught to shift, to swim as a seal, to hunt and dive so that when the time came she might be able to reach farther in her Descent.

She began to train at the family healers side also, learning to suture and brew. She had several tutors growing up, allowed to learn reading and writing only inasmuch as it helped her with her healing, as Andre, aging, knew that a more permanent fixture in the household with healing knowledge would ultimately be more valuable for them. It was under Andre's aging ownership that Solene came into her Offering at thirty-five, diving deep into the reefs to pull up her Tiger-eye. Again, a jewel that fit her purposes if not her mother's, which allowed her further finesse in her healing. And while Solene trained, her mother stymied any attempts at getting with child, encouraging their master toward true-born heirs to his estate.

And it was to one such child that they passed from their master's possession at his passing, just like the house and his fishing boats. Celie had been a nurse to Armand in his youth, and while he held little attraction to her he allowed her the continued freedoms his father had granted. Armand Faucheux had designs on grander standing on the island than what he had inherited, and paid little attention to the goings on of his house while he pursued his business. But he was not of an enterprising mindset, and frequently made poor business choices that kept him from furthering his ambitions. The staff, a mix of longer-lived slaves and family lines bought by Andre, ran themselves, for the most part, while their master made poor investments one after another. Soon, only his house and a single boat remained of the small fleet and several plots that Andre had grown. Distraught by his failures, Armand became a sullen drunkard, freqently gambling or isolating himself on his loan boat.

Armand's death was abrupt. While his father had lived to be eighty, and was eased into the Darkness by brews with his family beside him, Armand went quickly, drowned by tangling his lines. He was found by his eldest son and inheritor, Claude, when the little boat had not returned to shore for several days. And so Solene and her mother transferred hands again, this time to young Claude, eighteen and with designs on reestablishing the estate that his father had lost. The process has been one of upward struggle, Armand having depleted not only the family's savings and properties, but the staff as well. Celie and Solene had been lucky, members of the slave-staff that were established enough to be able to advise on how Andre had managed the estate. Only a couple other members were so fortunate, and they were held more closely to Claude than others.

Many changes were enacted in those early years of his dominion over their lives. Careful investments and expanses into different trades bolstered that which had been lost, but, by the time his own children were coming of age, they had not regained their previous standing.

She is part of my family too, he told Solene, measured and kind and still, always, from a place of ownership. Nothing Solene could say would change his choice. But she is experienced, and will live through many masters, and you have learned her duties and more. She is going.

She was going. She was going. She was gone.

Solene said goodbye to her mother the night before her new master came to retrieve her, on the beach, holding each other on the sand as the tide ebbed over their knees. Celie held her face in her hands, and Solene, shocked and tired and empty, realized that she'd never asked her mother's age. She didn't know if she would really outlive more masters, or if this new one would be her last. There was some solace in knowing Claude would not sell her to a master of ill reputation, his own attachment to them almost unseemly, but it was a thin balm.

That morning, Solene did not watch her mother get taken away. She looked, instead, to the horizon.
