Nikodemus Vee

The Basics

Full Name: Nikodemus Vee
Age: 320 as of AW103
Gender/Pronouns: he/him

Ethnicity: Nissi
Birthplace: Raej
Current Location: Raej
Profession: Territory Ruler

Caste: Blackwidow Warlord Prince
Birthright Jewel: Red (CUT 90)
Offering Jewel: Gray (CUT 68)

Face Claim: Otto Seppalainen

The Body

Height: 6'1
Body Type: Trim
Hair Color: White
Eye Color: Blue

Appearance:
Clean cut, well maintained. A shock of white hair, eyes like ice chips, a slash of a mouth not really fit for smiling, more of an insouciant pout. Striking cheekbones, an aggressive jawline, a brow heavy with the phantom touch of frown lines. The shadow of his position catches in his eyes, in the slant of his shoulders, in the draw of his spine. A figure used to and comfortable with commanding the attention of many, of directing the crowd.

Nik's life is one of grooming and observance, every outfit a message. He has a select number of long standing attendants that help him find a balanced presence, a uniform front. Clean shaven, pristine, hair groomed to pale luminescence and horn polished to a shine. The image of gentle aplomb, beatific dignity, kind restraint. Smooth as marble and clear as glass, no indication of the wildness of his caste or his other skin in the man that sits Raej's seat. Nik maintains his physique through fencing and long runs around the cities center seats in both forms, and numerous visits about the cities.

Four footed instead of two and Nik is still on the taller side, sleek, short furred. Dappled pale grey and white, Nikodemus belongs to the mists and fog of the grasslands. Long, delicate legs, narrow cloven hooves, a tail that curls naturally at the end and a flowing sleek tuft in dark silver. His horn is roughly teardrop shaped, the point facing out, without spiraling, the ridge sharp enough to cut. Black and smooth, its profile is only altered by a secondary spike, an aborted prong about half the length of his thumb. Sharp enough to gore, like the dominant point, it follows the curvature of the rest of the horn's two foot length. He doesn't look exactly gentle, in either shape, but at least as a man he's lacking the fangs.

The Mind

Craft Strengths: 15pts + 5 craft token bundle
Swift Shifter
Form Stability
Tangled Webs
Craft Weaknesses: Calming Spells, Vermin Warding, Cushioning Spells

Personality:
Solid, edged, a force to be reckoned with in the political field. His stature, his presence, his jewels. He's cultivated an air of strength and surety that does nothing to betray the rampant chaos of his thoughts, the whirling plans and dictations that occupy, seemingly, his every waking moment, and sometimes the sleeping ones.

Nikodemus takes his position with judicious seriousness and conviction. He is cool and calculating, cunning, a master of Raejian political game. His anger is never hot, and he is rarely angered. Raej is his life and his work, the court his best and most favored approximation of family. He cannot be soft, for all he holds the people of his territory as the most precious piece of his heart. To guard them, he must guard himself. Nik does not open up easily, or at all. Practiced distance is safety.

The image he has built to endure as Raej's Territory Ruler is one of control. Control of his forms, control of his caste, control of his power. There is little difference between Niko outside of his office and the Niko within, because he is always the Ruler of Raej. Only in his quiet moments, ensconced safely in his heavily warded and extensively protected city homes, does Nik loosen his tie, unclasp his cuff links, and shed his layers. The staff of these places, inherited from the houses of his parents, are the only ones who see the weight of the seat, the long hours, the weeks of planning that go into the Lykkelig Vidd gifts as he makes his own webs, only trusting thoroughly vetted hourglass associates for further comparison.

Niko is a thinker, a planner. Every move is made with exacting deliberation, and outside of politics this tends to make him equally unnerving and cold. He's got a funny bone, somewhere, and tends to laugh at things few others find amusing. He's got an unfortunate case of gallows humor, and is fascinated by things like taxidermy, pressed flowers, and preserved bugs. The vast majority of his interactions engage at least some of his politico schmoozing, but his confidants are those who get him preserved bats for his personal library. What little gentleness he can afford he expends with the people, making rounds, seeing and being seen by the citizenry on a regular basis no matter the city he resides in. It allows him to escape the strictness of the court while ostensibly working, a relief he finds as often as he can, but not strictly often enough in the eyes of his court.

The Backstory

Family:
  • Lovise Vee | Mother | Purple Dusk to Opal Blackwidow
  • Nels Thune | Father | Yellow to Summer-sky Warlord

History:
There is a thought that haunts him, decades separated from his parents, and it is this: perhaps they knew what they were getting into with him, and they chose him anyway. Allowed him to happen. Having been immersed in Raej's gently sinister political landscape for the better part of his awareness, Nik has no way of knowing their machinations, their little political by-games that lasted only as long as they weren't too forward, too obvious. He has only suspicions, hints and tiny threads of conversations gathered over the centuries to build into an incomplete picture.

He knows he's not the first child, nor the first Territory Ruler, to be bred for their position. Whether or not the White Web had a hand in his conception, in his parents paths crossing, he can't be sure. Perhaps they spun their webs and saw just farther with him than with any of their other prospects. Perhaps they threw darts at random names and his parents were put together by lottery. Perhaps it was real chance.

But perhaps it wasn't.

Regrettably, he is close to the truth. His father was a web member, high enough to be trusted with the hand and the future progeny of his mother, a very talented Blackwidow from the Territory's third circle. The White Web had spun nothing, walked nowhere, to arrange his birth - his parents meeting had been arranged in the same way many people across the territory's had been, lines crossing and possibilities blooming in their wake. They met, found each other agreeable in their own ways, and when Lovise deemed it prudent they tried for a child. Hence, Nikodemus.

Raised in the wings of the court, on the River Walk, Nik's experience with other children was... unique. He was one of several in the court's ranks, and one of two Nissi. He learned early the value of open eyes and ears, of well placed words and how quiet, well behaved children are ignored. He wouldn't realize he was spying until he was older, before he had the jewels or the training to extract himself from those positions.

But until then, Nik followed the flow of his parents, as most court children did. Spise, Hjerte, Kjeve; up and down the River, out to the little villages, hamlets, boroughs, towns. Age defined the division of his time, and as the years passed he began to summer with his father in the country, returning during alternating political seasons to his mother's side. There were few consistent tutors, and fewer consistent mentors, either by dint of political shuffling or his parent's machinations.

It would be callous to say he wasn't aware of the way Raej bent to Askavi's demands, to the tithes and the allowances and the people 'lent' out to the dark heart of their neighbor. It was just something so vast, and so present, consistently, that to Nik it was... normal. The miasma of tension and restrained fear hung in every circle of the court he visited, in every classroom, in every library, healing hall and craft house. He learned to recognize the touch of apprehension in the webs of new buildings when he interned for several months with the city maintenance crews, the inability to remove the threadbare taint of anxiety, the fervent wishes to remain hidden, safe, secure, unseen, for the love of Mother Night and Lady Vigdis, Darkness, keep them hidden.

His people, all his people, were as the lame mouse huddled in fear hiding from the cat - unable to leave their situation and paralyzed with fear over it.

Young, so young for his place in the world while being quiet old for his Birthright, Nikodemus descended at sixteen and rose with a Red, outstripping his parents by leagues and effectively launching himself forward on a path he's only recently come to acknowledge. Seeing the Territory, from the border with Pruul to the tiny strip of Northern coast that abutted Dhemlan, to the corner where Askavi and Dhemlan met with Raej as their awkward third partner, and all the little ruins and monuments in between - all the citizenry, all the little herds, all the care taken to make their existence a peaceful, possible one - he's enamored of it. His territory is beautiful and perfect, and Witch's touch mars that, stains the idyll something terrible and ugly.

He wanted more than fear for them.

There had been a handful of male rulers in Raej, Nissi and Blood alike, so Nikodemus' parents were not entirely shocked when he announced his intent at the seat at forty, apprenticed, at the time, to a District Steward. His age was their first contention - it would take maneuvering to unseat the incumbent Ruler, a Queen with age, political savvy and backing.

But Nik was resolute, and, again descending late, drew the Gray at fifty. The next half century was spent in apprenticeships and attending different stations of the court, building the foundation of his network, gaining allies, spies, informants. Tentatively, through his father, he touched into the shadowed mystery of the White Web, although his intent barred him further than the most limited access to their ranks. He took to their limited military instead, serving a double tour and achieving moderate rank.

The following hundred years, he ran for office.

Quietly, over the course of those delicate decades, Nikodemus' parents separated. His father returned to the myriad missions of the Web, while his mother delicately released her hold on her court seat in anticipation of his ascension, retiring to the suburbs of Kjeve to practice her Caste Craft, selecting her replacement with care for his intentions as well as her own.

Nik solidified himself in those hundred years, growing into himself as much as his position. He worked as a Steward, a First Escort, a Seer, and Master of the Guard, as well as assorted other odd positions in the cities at varying levels of the Territory, always working up, always going above and beyond to be present. The public of his chosen district of work knew his face, knew his dedication, and knew that he knew the intricacies of their laws and processes enough that concerns taken to him were addressed with care and consideration. The reputation of his Lykkelig Vidd gifts was one of nuance, of the idea of a threat laced so subtly into something that even the recipient wasn't entirely sure of the extent of Nikodemus' knowledge.

When he formally announced his intent to enter his name for consideration of the Seat, it was met with a sense of obviousness. Of course the young Vee would be angling for Territory Ruler, submitting himself for the undeniable next step of his career. It was only natural, after the time he'd spent canvassing the Territory, making himself known from the smallest hamlet to the city centers.

Two hundred and three, and Nikodemus ascended to the seat he had his eye on his entire life. In time to face Witch on the only field he likely would have found her on, but not long enough to reap a satisfactory revenge. Changing policy took time, even as a Ruler, and only fourteen years into Niko's tenure the little thorns he'd been weaving into their tithes, the faulty webwork, the spells to trigger faster decay of their produce. He'd been bolstering their military presence along the joint border, preparing for the inevitable push-back once an investigation was deemed necessary, but it never came.

Instead, Witch died, the land on the Askavi border turned barren and inhospitable for crops, and Nik was left to pick up the pieces of his people as they returned from their forays. The future promised different threats, less and more obvious than the talons of Witch, and he turned his attention instead to the web network that spanned the Territory, the veterans of a reign that had dominated their lives, the lifting of his people's dread. Raej's borders tentatively reopened, with Nikodemus as the face of welcome.
