Nyree

The Basics

Full Name: Nyree
Age: 50 (as of AW101)
Gender/Pronouns: female/she/her

Ethnicity: An Corithe
Birthplace: The forest
Current Location: Glacia Wilds
Profession: the useless queen

Caste: Queen
Birthright Jewel: Yellow (UNCUT 66)
Offering Jewel: Tiger Eye (CUT 69)

Face Claim: Astrid Berges-Frisbey

The Body

Height: 5’4”
Body Type: Solid
Hair Color: Black-brown
Eye Color: Light amber, bordering brown

Appearance:
Nyree appears younger than her years, much to her chagrin. Wide eyes and wild hair. Petite on top of it all. However Nyree weighs more than a person might suspect. She might be small but she is mighty. Compact, dense muscle with a nice layer of soft over the top from too much honey.

Marama once told Nyree that the reason her eyes were so brown was because her great grandmother caught a beautiful outlier Prince and took him to her tree.

In her half forgotten wolf form, Nyree is the browns and golds of fallen leaves moldering on the forest floor. Decay turning their bright edges grey. Sturdy like her woman form, though sleeker and not half as quick. She is an ungainly wolf, one ear tip folded half over, the outward sign of all she lacks.

The hair at the base of Nyree's skull grows in unevenly due to scaring.

The Mind

Craft Strengths: 15+5+5 + 3 Shifter Pts
Reading the Land
Queen’s Gift
Psychic Masking
Psychic Wounding
Psychic Shields
Swift Shifter
Form Stability [1pts]
Craft Weaknesses: Heating and Cooling Craft. The reverse always seems to happen? Calming Touch. Whoops. Blood Bonds, though she never has tried. Seems messy. Nyree’s combat and shielding craft is absolute trash, except for Psychic Wounding, but she doesn't realize she's doing that.

Personal Strengths: The Unflappable Miss Weird. Nyree is very good at evasive maneuvers, her brother has taught her all about ducking, weaving, and getting out of the way.
Personal Weaknesses: An inability to let go. Sometimes she gets in the way.

Personality:
Quiet, soft Nyree. Some might assume she is passive simply because she is impassive. She is merely the calm, still center. Undisturbed. Or perhaps too disturbed to express. While others roil, Nyree watches.

She is fearless. Nothing frightens Nyree. Heights. Water. Raging tempests. Anything but the dark. For Nyree all fears reside in darkness. She avoids the night as much as she can, prone to night terrors that leave her throat raw from screaming. Few can bear to share a home with her. Actually, only one has stayed.

Hard as steel Nyree. Defending with her body instead of her Craft. A fierce Queen who would sacrifice herself to protect. Too soft Nyree. Unable to be an effective leader because she gives instead of delegates. Unable to stand unhappiness between her people, instead of finding compromise between the wounded parties, Nyree drains herself dry to make them all happy.

Queer Nyree. Playful and strange. A woman who leaps from trees and catches fish with her toes. A crude tongue. A bold little heathen among those she is comfortable with. Where she can be free of judgment. The Nyree who is, instead of Nyree who died.

She knows people look at her strangely. Because she is or is not. Because she looks the child and sometimes acts it. Nyree knows. And sometimes she uses this knowledge, playing the game, the part, that they have laid out for her.

The Backstory

Family:
  • Tane | Father | Yellow to Summer-sky Warlord
  • Marama | Mother | Blood Female
  • Mauki “Mooki” | Younger Brother | Blood Male

History:
A sweet child who spoke to bees and watered seedlings. Nyree was full of smiles and laughter. Caretaker to her smaller brother and purveyor of honey. Her mother thought she might be a Healer when the time came. Or maybe a Priestess. She turned lessons into songs and took long walks to nowhere. Built castles in trees and climbed down into holes to see what nested inside.

She held Mooki’s hand and told him stories about people who rode on clouds. And she even tried to teach him to fish. As a child she used her fingers as lures. Wiggly like pale worms in the water until the fish came to close, or bit. Snatching them up and tossing them onto the shore while giggling.

They did not know a beaver dam had been broken down by the hunters. Releasing the build of up of spring rain and snow melt, turning their quiet stream into a torrent. Nyree is glad it was only her in the water. Sorry that Mooki was there at all. Though if he hadn’t been, maybe she would have stayed dead.

She remembers it still. The darkness. The nothingness. The day she died, the time she spent dead. Nyree remembers every minute of it. The utter lack of anything. Dark nothing. Absence on top of absence. She existed, but there was no existence.

They broke five of her ribs and cracked her sternum bringing her back. She breathed, choking on water, spitting it out. Dragged down and beaten by the water. Body cold and shivering. She started bleeding after that, the shallow gash on the back of her head had been nothing but a flesh wound before.

Because corpses don’t bleed.

But they had brought her back.

It was a long year. It was different after that. Her mother no longer talked of Castes or Jewels. All hopes belonged to Mooki now. His training intensified (when he could be dragged from Nyree’s side) and hers waned. It was confusing, the change. Nyree thought that something must have happened while she was dead. But she wasn’t allowed to talk about that. Her mother assuring her that she hadn’t died at all while her father stalked away.

A long year until it was time. There was an argument as to whether or not she should be allowed to try. But Nyree wasn’t broken. She lived and breathed and she had the right. Plus Mooki would not go without her. So they went. A kind Priest talking Nyree through the Ceremony. It was dark here too. Nyree didn't like the dark. She ceased to exist without light. The world forgot her.

But there was light in this darkness. Warmth. A sun. A golden Yellow sun.

She wore a Yellow Jewel, and she was a Queen.

Strange how such things happen.

Nyree went back to singing to plants and whispering to bees. But now there was power behind it. A Gift that swelled the bud. A puff of Craft that dispersed the bees so she could steal their honey. There was so much to learn. Expectations to be met. She was worth something again. No longer just a fey child to cared for and fretted over.

Hard lessons in Craft. In people. Endless lessons. Lessons from Mooki and a band of rough friends as they chased Nyree through the trees, circling and surrounding until she could escape them every time. Every single time. It was exhausting. She wasn’t much good with weapons (though Nyree did learn to swing a pan with some force), but Nyree grew good at wiggling free of tight clutches.

She was an escape artist. Which also made her rather good at dodging lessons.

Learned how to hold a second shape. Though she used it less than the others. Too much time spent with her Jeweless brother. Nyree's wolf was weak, left in the dark unless it was forced out of her.

She was sixteen when she began shadowing a chieftess. She made her Offering at twenty-five, facing the darkness again in hopes that having her full strength would make her a more effective leader.  Her father said she could not return home until her training was completed. And Enele said she could not return if she did. She could not please both, dividing herself even as she tried. By thirty, Nyree put ideas of ruling anything but herself out of her head. She could call seeds to bud but was unable to wield a leash, that would have to be enough for both of them.

She had one tree as her kingdom, and a brother to help her guard it. It was enough. There were a few more false starts. A virgin night to be seen to, full of Night of Fire and enough light to keep anything resembling darkness at bay. A Warlord who tugged at her, power reaching for him, a connection that was tentative. Ephemeral.

None would serve. How could they when Nyree saw to all the service herself? He too escaped into the night after a clash of wills.

Sometimes Nyree thought the Darkness had made a mistake. Perhaps they had been right and she should’t have sought her Yellow. But then she would seep her power into the land. Listen to it whisper in her ear. Songs sang up through her bare soles.

Mother Night never chose wrong. Nyree might not be the sort of Queen to be served, but she could serve the land.

She built a small, single room house with her brother, beneath Nyree's favorite tree. It was her tree, and boasted not one, but two bee hives, and various decorations depending on her mood. Mooki would like to say that the crooked wall of the house was Nyree's doing, and not his. She occasionally tutored small children in various traditions and how to catch fish with their fingers. Otherwise she tended the land and gathered herbs and other useful things in her wanderings (which had never taken her beyond Waoud lands).

She waited, too, for Enele to forgive her. To remember they were friends. To look at her and see something more than a child. But he could not. Something had broken between them, and Nyree didn't have the skill to fix it. Just the patience to wait it out. And the selfishness to claim his rut for her own. To let him have what he didn't want, and then cling harder when the passion was over. Until she broke her heart on his truth.

Broken he named her, and Nyree knew that he had pretended. Saw her the same as everyone else. She fled her pain and her people. This time it was she who left in darkness. Pack over her back, wolf friend at her side. And an unwanted shadow. A friend Nyree could not accept but could not turn away. She crossed the realm and into another, intending to help where her kind was needed. Where no one would know or care that she had died.

Where no one would care at all so long as she turned their fallow land into healthy earth again. She lived a season with strangers and without her wolf. It didn't matter, since she was hardly ever her second self anyway. Too slow and clumsy. Bad dreams sending her to wake the black widow Emory, so Nyree could see in a web it was time to go home. Her whole heart left behind in another place.

Maybe this time she could make it up to him. Prove she had fixed what was broken inside her. She had learned how to not hurt others, and Nyree had never refused to accept suffering of her own.
