Eydis Greenstone

Gender/Pronouns: Female she/her

Ethnicity: short-lived
Birthplace: Odense, Glacia
Current Location: Odense, Glacia
Profession: Queen of Kisdy

The Body

Height: 5'9
Body Type: Sturdy
Hair Color: Gray- previously blonde
Eye Color: Blue

Appearance:
Age has been kind to Eydis. Softening a brash, charismatic youth with slowly learned elegance and poise. Channeling that fervor into welcoming warmth. A kind smile and eyes that glimmer with wisdom. Dirt dusted hands always ready to embrace. A straight spine for the weaker to hide behind.

Once she had blonde hair and plump lips. More beautiful now, some say, that she has matured. All white locks and sharply tailored pantsuits. A modern ruler with a proud walk and ready laugh. All the experience and tact you hope to see someone of such jewel power possessing evident in her confidence. But if you catch in the right moment, those seconds between the door opening and her noticing, you see it. The wistful look of someone waiting. A sadness few could comprehend. Tucked away again, as she notices you. Replaced by all the affection her sturdy frame can exude.

The Mind

Craft Strengths: 15pts+5pts
Queen's Gift
Blood Bonds
Reading the Land
Calming Touch

Craft Weaknesses: Compulsion Spells and complex psychical craft and shield work.

Personality:
Eydis never struggled with accepting the responsibility of her caste. From the earliest she was passionate about her people. Ready to give whatever it took to see them flourish. That intensity has not lessened, but her ability and methods of seeing it through have matured. She takes her work seriously. Hovers, perhaps too much, as she teaches the next generation to embrace their roles. Petting and fussing and finding new ways to convey her enthusiasm for life.

It was never in the cards for Eydis to travel. Her curiosity and wanderlust satisfied by living vicariously through the stories of others. But she loves the idea of it. Invests her energy and Odense’s budget into endeavors of diplomacy and exploration. And always welcomes visitors, refugees, and immigrants to her city. A warm acceptance of people is her true gift. An ability to look beyond the flaws and nourish the good. She’s been lucky that kindness has been well met so far instead of taken advantage of.

There isn’t a sour bone in her body, and rarely a frown on her face. The sort of woman that believes problems can be talked out most of the time. A friendly, boisterous woman always ready to laugh. Full of that sort of offhanded good nature rare to find in such a brutal world. Promising safety and understanding for those that need such things.

With the jewels to ensure it. Never forget. She has never apologized for or been afraid to use them.

The Backstory

Family:

History:
Childhood & Adolescence:
Summer is the birthing season for the women of Glacia. Babies conceived on winter nights when the threat of bone numbing cold seep under the door. Eydis was one such child. A long awaited queenling. The withering old woman on the throne relieved to know the next generation was finally arrived. Born to a simple fisherman’s daughter and her sailor husband the young girl was spoiled from the start. Moved into the Sjefhjem along with her parents to be afforded the best care.

She was close to her mentor, Queen Mjolli, who became a sort of grandmother to young Eydis. Friendly and bright she was a favorite child for more than just her caste. That friendliness would be to her advantage. Because when the spring before her tenth birthday came, and with it Frjosemi and her Birthright Ceremony, so did fear.

Only 43 years had passed since the defeat of Witch. Her cruelty was passed on in tales by fathers that had suffered in the war. The Red little Eydis was granted that day made everyone hold their breath. What would it spell for Glacia? Who could say, really? Many in the territory and out, turned suspicious eyes on Odense.

Some even came to end the ‘problem’ before it became one. By the time she was twenty there had been seven attempts on Eydis’s life. None successful, bless The Darkness. Only her spirits harmed despite the efforts of mercenaries and assassins. Her people, though, learned to trust. To believe in their future queen. And she did not let them down.

Early Adulthood:
For her own security Eydis had her Virgin Night. A delicate, dangerous evening she had long dreaded. Not out of shyness, but fear for the partner entrusted to lead her through. No man of suitable jewels and trustworthiness could be found. It was a Sapphire jeweled prince, a close friend. With great care and an immeasurable amount of Night of Fire she emerged unscathed. Whole, and now unbreakable.

Just in time, too. Queen Mjolli’s age was quickly weakening her abilities. She needed to retire, for the benefits of her own health. It was rarely done, the passing of the mantle before the younger queen had made her Offering. But in Eydis’s case, there was no need. The Red already outranked the Purple Dusk that had kept Odense from floundering for a century.

Barely a year later the hardest winter on record descended on Odense. They were used to hunkering down. But the ice lasted longer than usual. Spring planting hindered in many areas, her Red only enough for half the District. She turned twenty-two while people starved. Decided then it was time.

Descending into her Offering while the rest of the Realm prayed. She could feel it, all the pressure on her shoulders. The fear and worry and hope too. It was not what she wanted, though. To be Witch. To be anything more than the queen of Odense. She didn’t even aspire to take the territory as a whole. The Darkness read her heart. And chose for her a descent into the Ebon-gray. Still a weighty responsibility. But not the living myth. Not dealt the duty of repairing what the last had harmed.

Her relief was so great that she still cries sometimes. Thinking of what could have been, and the cowardice that made her shy from it.

Not all those years of youth were spent on work and stress, though. One spring, when she in her late twenties, a visitor came. A bit odd, but full of adventure. She loved him then, right from the start.

Adulthood:
Five years of scattered courtship ended in marriage. Prince Greenstone was the one man that could always make her giggle. He never stopped exploring. Returning again and again with stories of his beloved rocks and caves. The time in between was somewhat lonesome for Eydis, of course.

A problem soon solved when her father was killed in a short lived conflict between Odense and Fyrkat. Her mother once again moved into the Sjefhjem. What Eydis really wanted was children. The young boys and girls that came into the house for apprenticeships brightened her days. But Odense was a needy city. A single season without her jewel power to enrich the land would have them all starving again. She poured all her energy into the skysquadron. Expanded Odense’s trading endeavors. Hired hearth witches with preservation spells that could last a century if needed. Whatever it took for a baby all her own.

Naturally, when it happened, quite a number of years later, he was spoiled from his breath. A moment his mother quiet nearly missed. Suffering through nine months of illness as her jewels threatened to consume child and mother both. Sick until the last moment, when she was too weak to push and the healers had to open her belly to save the babe. A boy, strong and screaming. Eydis would have to wait to see, but every pain and fear in her life became worthwhile once he was in her arms.

She parented the same way she queened. Darion was a spoiled boy. Taught to believe there was no greater duty than serving. The call put deep into his little heart quite young. The center of attention. Diplomatic meetings paused so he could stand on the table and show them his newest feat of Craftwork. Tantrums kissed away instead of corrected. And could he ever throw a tantrum! As full of wanderlust as his parents. Ringleader to a gaggle of children that were always up to antics.

He was the joy of her life after nearly being the death of her. His birth ending her ability to produce more. An only child. Her one darling dearest baby. She might never have another of her own blood, but there were soon more youngsters to fill the house. Two young queens for apprenticing. Tiny warlord princes to sooth. These were the years of her life she would most look back on. Motherhood was a beautiful thing. It suited her.

Darion grew into a young man. Her pride in him only increasing. She taught him the many ways to serve. And serve he did. Off on envoys to bring more trade to their city. Away, to another queen. A heart queen. Taking hers along with him.

Understanding did not ease the ache his absence left. If Darion had been spoiled those that remained after were doubly so. She made no apologies. Just poured all the love she had into them. Of an age and station to mother anyone she wished to mother. And without her only baby there she wanted to mother the world.

That didn’t change. Time marched on. He wrote to her. Eydis poured her energy into her responsibilities. Odense flourished under her reign. They became a key player in the realm’s transportation industry. A few more hard winters were faced under her Ebon-gray craftwork. Trade with Little Terreille kept them afloat. All seemed well enough. Not as happy as it had once been. But she was content.

Present:
Age has been good to Eydis. Beloved by her people. Welcomed into their homes and lives whenever the mood for visiting suits her. A good queen with a good steady city under her care. It lent time to dwell on trivialities. Like where her boy had disappeared to. After all that time, for the letters to suddenly stop?

It took a year for worry to become fear. She knew only what he told her about his life. News of his heart bonded queen dying reached her after many months spent questioning his sudden silence. No explanations were offered. Even when she wrote every Queen in Little Terreille for answers. Now, as the skysquadrons travel they all search. Each hoping to be the one that finds out where he went. What happened.

As for Eydis, she does what she has always done best. Heaps her affection on those that come to her for mentoring. Keeps Odense safe and fed to the best of her abilities. Braces her people, for the Seers say the worst of many winters is upon them.
